What Is a Handheld Gaming PC, and How Does It Differ From a Nintendo Switch?

A handheld gaming PC is a portable computer with a built-in screen and game controls. A Nintendo Switch is a dedicated Nintendo console with its own software ecosystem and handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. The key difference is not simply shape: a PC handheld is built around a computer platform and flexible software, while Switch is built around Nintendo’s console games and play modes.

What a handheld gaming PC actually is

A handheld gaming PC combines the parts you would normally associate with a computer—an operating system, storage, networking, a display and a processor—with controls and a battery-powered handheld enclosure. It is a computer designed around gaming, rather than a conventional laptop or desktop with a separate controller.

Valve describes Steam Deck in its official booklet as “a complete, self contained gaming PC.” The same description explains that the tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and other accessories are replaced by hardware, controls and a screen in one handheld form factor. You can read the manufacturer’s wording in the Steam Deck Booklet.

Steam Deck runs SteamOS 3, which Valve identifies as Arch-based, and it can also be used for general PC functions through its desktop environment. Valve’s Desktop FAQ documents that desktop use. That flexibility can include installing software, connecting peripherals and using the device away from its gaming interface.

“Handheld gaming PC” is a category description, not a guarantee that every PC game will run perfectly. Compatibility depends on the individual game, its anti-cheat or launcher requirements, the operating system, graphics settings and the particular handheld. Before buying, check the games and services you actually use on the manufacturer’s compatibility information and current community reports.

What a Nintendo Switch is

Nintendo Switch is a dedicated console. Its software, account system, accessories and game distribution are designed around Nintendo’s platform rather than a general-purpose desktop operating system. Nintendo’s official specifications list a slot for Nintendo Switch game cards as well as digital game support.

The original Switch family supports three documented play modes:

  • Handheld mode: the screen and controllers are used as one portable unit.
  • Tabletop mode: the console is placed on its stand and the controllers can be used separately.
  • TV mode: the console connects to a television through its dock.

Nintendo also says that Joy-Con controllers can operate separately as two controllers for supported games. This makes shared play a central part of the Switch design, rather than an accessory you must add to create the basic console experience. The modes and controller behavior are described on Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch hardware page.

The specifications and battery figures in this article refer to the original Nintendo Switch family, not Switch 2. Do not assume that a specification listed here applies to a newer model without checking Nintendo’s current documentation.

Weight Approximately 669 grams, according to Valve’s cited technical specification. Not stated on the cited Nintendo specification pages.
Controls and local play Built-in gaming controls; additional controllers can be connected. Detachable Joy-Con can be used attached, separately or as two controllers in supported games.
Expansion and connections microSD expansion, USB-C for peripherals and an external display, and Bluetooth support are listed by Valve. Docked TV output and Nintendo’s console accessories; the cited pages emphasize the console’s own modes and game-card slot.
General-purpose use Can switch to a desktop environment and perform PC functions. Designed primarily for Nintendo console games and related services.

The table compares published specifications and documented features; it is not a performance benchmark. The manufacturers measure battery life under their own conditions, and the figures are not a controlled head-to-head test.

Software libraries and game compatibility

PC handhelds use a computer game ecosystem

On a PC handheld, the first question is whether a particular game and its supporting software work on that device. SteamOS can present a console-like interface, but the underlying platform remains a PC. Some games run natively, some rely on compatibility technology, and others may need configuration changes or may not work because of launchers, drivers or anti-cheat systems.

This also affects non-game software. A PC handheld can be connected to a keyboard, mouse, monitor or other accessories and used for tasks beyond gaming. That versatility is useful if you want one device for games and occasional computer work, but it also means more settings and possible troubleshooting than a closed console platform.

Switch uses Nintendo’s platform

Switch games are made for Nintendo’s hardware and operating system. A game purchased as a Switch card or digital download is intended to launch through the console’s software environment, with Nintendo handling the platform-level experience. The trade-off is less general-purpose flexibility: you cannot treat the Switch as a normal desktop computer in the way Valve documents for Steam Deck.

Game availability is therefore a platform decision. If the titles you want are Nintendo releases or games published for Switch, the console ecosystem is the relevant compatibility check. If your library is primarily PC-based, investigate the exact handheld, operating system and individual game support rather than assuming that a PC label guarantees compatibility.

How the play experience differs

Handheld, tabletop and TV use on Switch

Switch changes between its three documented modes without requiring you to build a separate PC setup. In handheld mode, the screen and Joy-Con travel as one unit. In tabletop mode, the console’s stand supports the screen while controllers can be shared. In TV mode, the dock provides the connection to a television. Joy-Con can be used independently as two controllers where a game supports that arrangement.

PC handhelds can be handheld or connected to equipment

A PC handheld is also self-contained for portable play, but its connection options are oriented toward computer peripherals. Valve lists USB-C for peripherals and an external display, Bluetooth support and microSD expansion on the Steam Deck Hardware page. With the right accessories, it can serve as a small computer connected to a monitor, keyboard, mouse or other devices.

The two approaches solve different problems. Switch makes shared console play and quick movement between handheld, tabletop and television modes part of its design. A PC handheld emphasizes the ability to connect to a broader range of computer equipment and to change how the device is used.

Screen, resolution and what the numbers mean

Valve’s cited Steam Deck technical specification lists a 7-inch display with a 1280 × 800 resolution. Nintendo lists the original Switch with a 6.2-inch LCD and a 1280 × 720 resolution on its Technical Specs – Nintendo Switch page.

These are manufacturer specifications, not a verdict about which screen looks better. Perceived image quality also depends on panel characteristics, viewing distance, game rendering and display settings. The useful factual difference is the published diagonal size and pixel dimensions: Steam Deck’s cited screen is larger and has a different aspect ratio, while Switch’s cited model uses a 6.2-inch 16:9 LCD.

Battery life: read the estimates carefully

Valve lists a 40Wh battery and estimates 2–8 hours of gameplay for the cited Steam Deck specification. Nintendo estimates approximately 4.5–9 hours for the original Switch and notes that battery life depends on the game; Nintendo gives approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as an example.

Those ranges should not be turned into a universal battery winner. They come from different manufacturers, hardware and test conditions. A demanding game, high brightness, wireless connections, frame-rate settings and background activity can all change runtime. Treat the figures as planning estimates for the named models, not as a controlled comparison or a promise for every game.

Storage, cards and external devices

Valve lists microSD expansion for Steam Deck, allowing storage to be extended with a compatible card. Its USB-C port is listed for peripherals and an external display, and Bluetooth provides a wireless connection option. The exact accessory setup depends on the port, adapter or dock you choose.

Nintendo’s original Switch specifications include a game-card slot. Physical cards provide one way to own and move games, while digital purchases use the console’s internal or expandable storage. Nintendo’s cited pages define the console’s supported modes and outputs rather than presenting it as a general USB-C computer, so accessory compatibility should be checked against Nintendo’s documentation for the specific device and accessory.

Which type fits your priorities?

Investigate a handheld gaming PC when you want:

  • Access to PC games and services, subject to each game’s compatibility.
  • A device that can leave its gaming interface for desktop PC functions.
  • microSD expansion and computer-style connections such as USB-C peripherals, Bluetooth devices or an external display.
  • More control over software, settings and accessories, and you are prepared to troubleshoot when a game or service needs special configuration.

Compare Nintendo Switch models when you want:

  • Nintendo’s own console software and game ecosystem.
  • Built-in handheld, tabletop and TV modes.
  • Detachable Joy-Con that can work separately or as two controllers in supported games.
  • Physical Nintendo Switch game cards as an option alongside digital purchases.

This is a decision framework, not a claim that one platform is universally better. Start with the games you intend to play, then check the device-specific compatibility, accessories and display or battery requirements that matter to you.

A sensible buying checklist

  1. List your must-play games. Separate Nintendo titles from PC titles and verify support for the exact device rather than relying on the category name.
  2. Decide how much computer flexibility you need. If you want desktop applications, external monitors or PC peripherals, examine the handheld’s operating system and ports. If you want a focused console interface, evaluate the Switch software and modes.
  3. Choose your preferred play arrangement. Consider whether detachable controllers and two-player tabletop play are central requirements, or whether Bluetooth, USB-C and monitor connections matter more.
  4. Plan storage. Check whether you will use physical game cards, digital downloads, microSD expansion or external storage supported by the device.
  5. Use battery figures as ranges. Compare the manufacturer’s estimate for the named model, but allow for the game, brightness and settings you actually use.
  6. Check model scope before purchase. The Switch figures above describe the original Switch family, and Valve notes on its technical page that specifications can change and that some storage configurations are available only while supplies last.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “PC” means universal compatibility: game support can vary with operating system, launcher and anti-cheat requirements.
  • Comparing battery ranges as laboratory results: the 2–8-hour and approximately 4.5–9-hour figures are manufacturer estimates for different products.
  • Treating resolution as picture quality: pixel dimensions do not describe every part of a display.
  • Assuming every Switch specification applies to newer hardware: verify whether a page covers the original Switch or another model.
  • Ignoring accessories: a monitor, keyboard, mouse, dock, controller or adapter can change the setup and cost of either platform.

Bottom line

A handheld gaming PC is a compact computer built around portable gaming, with a PC operating system, broader connection options and the potential for desktop use. Nintendo Switch is a dedicated console built around Nintendo software, game cards and three play modes, with detachable Joy-Con designed for flexible local play. Choose the PC handheld when your priority is a PC game library and computer flexibility—after checking compatibility. Choose Switch when Nintendo’s platform, Joy-Con sharing and handheld/tabletop/TV design match the games and play style you want.
