A GTIN is a number used to identify a trade item in commerce; a UPC-A or EAN-13 is a barcode symbol that can carry one of those numbers. “UPC” commonly means the 12-digit GTIN-12, while “EAN” commonly means the 13-digit GTIN-13. An ISBN identifies a book and can be represented in a GTIN-13-compatible format for an EAN-13 barcode.
What a GTIN identifies
A Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is a GS1 identification key for a trade item: something that may be priced, ordered, or invoiced in a supply chain. Each distinct trade item receives its own GTIN. GTIN, UPC, EAN, ISBN, and barcode: the differences

The terms overlap in everyday speech because people often call the printed symbol a “UPC” or “EAN,” while the digits are the identifier. More precisely, the number identifies the trade item and the barcode is one way to encode it for scanning. What the digits tell you—and what they do not
In GTIN-12 and GTIN-13 structures, the components are a company prefix, an item reference, and a final check digit. A GS1 Member Organisation licenses the prefix; the company assigns the item reference; and the check digit helps verify that the number is structurally valid. The complete number is not a plain-language product code. Its digits cannot, by themselves, reliably reveal the item’s description, price, or manufacturing country. Those details generally sit in a database; a scan can provide a key for retrieving associated information when a matching record is available. How to interpret the term you see
- A retail or marketplace field asks for a UPC or EAN: it usually wants the product’s GTIN in the relevant format, not an image of the barcode.
- A scanner reads printed bars: the symbol is a barcode; the digits it represents are the identifier.
- A book record asks for an ISBN: use the book’s ISBN. Its barcode representation may be EAN-13-compatible, but that does not make “ISBN,” “EAN,” and “UPC” interchangeable terms.
- A carton or small item has a different-length code: GTIN-14 is used for cases and packaging, while GTIN-8 is used for smaller-sized items.
If you handle printed labels, a barcode scanner can read compatible symbols, but no scanner is needed just to distinguish the terms: the key question is whether a form requests an identifier or a barcode image.
