In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a godling is a childlike woodland creature that guards its home near human settlements. Geralt encounters Johnny in Velen and Sarah in Novigrad; what he decides about Sarah determines whether she later appears with Johnny at Bald Mountain.
What is a godling in The Witcher 3?
The in-game bestiary describes godlings as woodland creatures that live in burrows and moss-covered hollow stumps on the outskirts of settlements. They look and behave like children, enjoy mischief, and are closely attached to their territory. Their mischief is not the whole story: godlings also perform small acts of care and guardianship for people and animals living nearby. The bestiary text reproduced by the Witcher Wiki says they are “deeply rooted in their home territory.”

Godlings are drawn to joy and innocence and tend to reveal themselves to children. They value quiet and may offer small services in return for respect, food, or discarded tools. Treating one rudely can offend it. These details come from the game’s fictional bestiary, not from a documented real-world account of folklore.

It opens with an in-world quotation attributed to Professor Dorregaray, from The World We Have Lost: “Not too long ago the areas around peasant hamlets were chock full of guardian spirits. Today it’s nigh unto impossible to spot a brownie, bucca or lutin. And godlings, they are always the first to go. Such is the price we pay for civilization’s forward march.” This is fictional worldbuilding, not a quotation from a real folklore scholar.

Who are Johnny and Sarah?
Johnny and Sarah are the two godlings central to the quests and scenes most relevant to Geralt’s story. Their roles differ: Johnny helps Geralt in Velen, while Sarah is part of a Novigrad quest whose outcome depends on Geralt’s choice.
| Character | Where Geralt encounters them | Story role | Choice connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Johnny | Velen, during Geralt’s search connected to Ciri | Helps Geralt reach the Ladies of the Wood and later helps Geralt and Ciri at Bald Mountain | Sarah may appear with him at Bald Mountain, depending on Geralt’s decision in Novigrad |
| Sarah | A house believed to be haunted in Novigrad | Her presence is at the center of the quest Novigrad Dreaming | If Geralt sends her away, she later appears with Johnny; if he lets her stay with Corinne Tilly, she is absent from that scene |
Johnny’s part in the story
Geralt meets Johnny while following the trail connected to Ciri. After helping him regain his voice, Geralt receives Johnny’s help reaching the Ladies of the Wood. Johnny later helps Geralt and Ciri at Bald Mountain. The Official Witcher Wiki’s Johnny entry describes his quest role and the later scene.
Sarah and the haunted house
Sarah is the godling living in a Novigrad house that people believe is haunted. Geralt encounters her during Novigrad Dreaming. She is not Johnny’s relative; in the outcome where they meet, the game references describe her as his friend. The Witcher Wiki’s Sarah entry covers her identity and encounter.

What happens if Geralt sends Sarah away or lets her stay?
Geralt’s decision changes Sarah’s later appearance, not what kind of creature she is. If he makes her leave the house, Sarah later turns up with Johnny at Bald Mountain. If he lets her stay with Corinne Tilly, Johnny is alone in that scene. The Prima Games Complete Edition guide describes the Sarah-dependent Bald Mountain scene; the Johnny reference also records the branch.
- Send Sarah away: she later appears with Johnny, and says things worked out because she met him.
- Let Sarah stay with Corinne Tilly: Sarah remains with Corinne and does not appear with Johnny at Bald Mountain.
Are there other godlings?
Yes. The game reference also lists an unnamed godling near Fyresdal, but the available account does not give enough quest detail to compare that encounter meaningfully with Johnny and Sarah. The GamesLantern godlings entry reproduces bestiary material about godlings’ guardianship and their departure when a settlement changes.
For the main story, Johnny and Sarah are the godlings to know: Johnny’s help links Velen to the Ladies of the Wood and Bald Mountain, while Sarah’s fate follows from Geralt’s decision during Novigrad Dreaming.
