A French manicure is a nail design with a sheer pink, nude, or clear base and a contrasting tip—traditionally white. The familiar look is commonly credited to ORLY founder Jeff Pink, who developed and popularized a practical style for Hollywood productions in the 1970s. Today, “French manicure” describes many variations, including colored, ombré, reverse, and negative-space designs.
What defines a French manicure?
The defining feature is contrast between the nail bed and the tip. In the classic version, a sheer pink or nude base keeps the nail looking natural, while a crisp white line follows its free edge. The design can be adapted to different nail lengths and colors; white tips are traditional, not required.
Why is it called a French manicure?
ORLY’s account places the practical idea in Hollywood, not France. Its official history says Jeff Pink began discussing a versatile, time-saving nail look with Hollywood studios in 1976 for actresses moving between wardrobe changes. After the look appeared on Paris runways in 1978, the company says Pink settled on the name “French Manicure.” ORLY’s company history recounts that sequence.
The exact origin is debated, and the name alone does not establish that the style originated in France. ORLY credits Pink with popularizing the modern version in the 1970s, rather than proving that he was the first person ever to create a similar nail design. In a September 9, 2026 press release, ORLY described the style as created in 1976 for Hollywood productions and said its Original French Manicure Kit was under curatorial review by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. What are the main types of French manicure?
French variations can be understood by looking at the tip’s color, how sharply it meets the base, where the accent sits, and how much decoration is added. - Prepare the nails. Remove old polish, shape the free edges, and apply a sheer pink, nude, or clear base coat. Let it dry before painting the tips.
- Paint the tips. Use white polish and a steady stroke along each free edge. A precision brush can help control the line; the tip should be scaled to the nail rather than made equally thick on every nail.
- Clean up and finish. Refine uneven edges with the brush, allow the design to dry, and apply a clear top coat to seal it.
