A “dual-purpose key” can mean different things depending on the context. On a computer keyboard, it usually means a key with a normal action and a secondary function, often accessed with Fn. In cryptography, it can mean using one key for more than one purpose—a practice NIST generally advises against. A patent also uses the phrase for a specialized physical key that incorporates a retractable utility blade.
What does “dual-purpose key” mean?
There is no single universal definition. The phrase may refer to a computer key with a secondary function, a cryptographic key used for multiple purposes, or a specific mechanical key design. The relevant meaning depends on whether the discussion is about keyboards, cryptography or a physical-key patent.

What is a dual-purpose key on a keyboard?
On a computer keyboard, a dual-purpose key performs a primary action and offers a secondary action, commonly activated by holding Fn or another modifier. For example, a key may type a character normally and control volume or screen brightness when used with Fn. Laptop keys may also provide media, wireless, touchpad or display controls.
The exact mapping depends on the computer and keyboard. Check the symbols printed on the keys and the device’s documentation; shortcuts are not consistent across models. An educational laptop chapter describes these kinds of secondary functions, while a computer terminology reference explains how they are accessed: laptop keyboard functions and computer terminology.

What does the Fn key do?
Fn is a modifier that lets a key invoke its alternate function. On many laptops, pressing Fn together with a key marked with a speaker or sun symbol adjusts volume or brightness. Whether Fn must be held, or whether the alternate action is the default, depends on the device and its settings.
What does “dual-purpose key” mean in cryptography?
In cryptography, the phrase can describe using the same cryptographic key for distinct purposes—for example, encryption and digital signatures. NIST’s general guidance is to use a key for only one purpose. Its May 2011 draft of SP 800-57 Part 1 Revision 3 states, “In general, a single key should be used for only one purpose.” The draft lists encryption, authentication, key wrapping, random number generation and digital signatures as examples of key purposes: NIST draft key-management guidance.

Separating purposes can limit the consequences if a key is compromised and avoid conflicts in how a key is managed over its lifecycle. Reusing one key across separate cryptographic processes can undermine security or make it harder to manage the key safely.

NIST’s guidance distinguishes reusing a key across separate processes from a single cryptographic operation that provides multiple services. Its draft cites authenticated encryption and digital signatures as examples of operations that can provide more than one service. The one-purpose principle is therefore general guidance, not a claim that every operation must provide only one service.

Yes, in a specialized design. A Google Patents record describes a mechanical key combined with a retractable utility blade and lists publication on November 15, 2022: CN217812875U patent record. This is one particular design, not a general definition of the phrase.
