DAC functionality is built into many playback devices, so an external converter is optional.
What does a digital audio converter do?
A digital-to-analog converter receives digital values and produces an analog output. Analog Devices defines a DAC as a converter that takes digital data—a stream of numbers—and outputs a voltage or current proportional to those values. For audio, that output represents the sound signal for the next part of the playback chain.

The basic playback path is:
Digital audio source → DAC → analog output → amplifier or headphone/speaker system
The DAC performs the conversion; it is not necessarily the amplifier or the speaker. HP describes audio DACs as transforming digital audio into analog signals, with processing that includes filtering and analog reconstruction. Analog Devices’ D/A Converter glossary and HP’s overview of DACs explain the function and playback path.

Where is the DAC in a playback setup?
A DAC may be built into a laptop, phone, sound card, or Hi-Fi system. In that case, the device converts audio internally and provides an analog output. An external DAC performs the conversion in a separate device; compact USB or USB-C dongles with headphone outputs are one common form, while other external units are designed for desktop or stereo setups. Focal describes examples of built-in and external DACs in its DAC guide.
An external DAC is useful to consider when the source does not have the output or connection you need, or when you need a different arrangement for headphones, an amplifier, or speakers. Its presence alone does not establish that sound will improve in every setup.

DAC vs. ADC: playback and recording
A DAC converts digital data to an analog signal for playback. An analog-to-digital converter, or ADC, works in the opposite direction: it turns a continuously varying analog signal into digital numbers. A microphone or instrument recording chain can use an ADC to send audio to a computer.

What to check when choosing a DAC
Specifications describe what a converter can accept or output; they do not, by themselves, prove an audible advantage. Start with how the device must fit your setup:
- Source and input: Check that the DAC accepts the digital connection your source provides, such as USB, and is compatible with that source.
- Analog output: Match its connectors and output type to your headphones, amplifier, or powered speakers.
- Headphone output: If you plan to connect wired headphones directly, check whether the DAC has a headphone output. A DAC without one may need a separate amplifier in the chain.
- Channels: Check the channel count against your stereo or multichannel requirements.
- Recording inputs: If you need to capture sound from a microphone or instrument, look for ADC functionality and recording inputs, typically found on an audio interface.
- Resolution: A DAC’s resolution refers to the number of digital input bits available to represent the analog output. Treat it as a capability to match to your sources, not a standalone measure of sound quality.
Analog Devices identifies interface, resolution, channel count, and voltage or current output as converter considerations. Its explanations of data converter specifications and ADC and DAC types provide technical context.
