A death cross is a bearish chart event in which a stock’s 50-day moving average crosses below its 200-day moving average. Traders read that relationship as evidence that recent price action has weakened relative to its longer-term trend. The crossover is a description of what has already happened in the price data—not a guarantee that the stock, index or market will keep falling.
Understanding the distinction matters. The arithmetic is objective once you specify the security, price series, moving-average type and observation date. The bearish conclusion is an interpretation that must be weighed with price structure, volume, company fundamentals and broader market conditions.

What is a death cross?
In the conventional stock-market definition, a death cross occurs when the 50-day moving average moves from above the 200-day moving average to below it. The 50-day average reacts more quickly because it contains fewer observations. The 200-day average smooths a longer history and changes more slowly.
The word “death” describes the signal’s traditionally bearish reputation, not a prediction of a company’s failure or a certain market crash. A crossover can appear in an individual stock, an exchange-traded fund, an index or another price series. The exact date depends on the data used and on whether a trader requires an intraday move, a closing-price crossover or confirmation on a later session.

| Component | Conventional specification | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Shorter average | 50-day moving average | Responds relatively quickly to recent price changes |
| Longer average | 200-day moving average | Represents a slower, longer historical trend |
| Event | 50-day average crosses below 200-day average | Shows recent average price has fallen below the longer-period average |
These are common settings, not a rule that every trader or charting program must use. A different period, a different moving-average method or a different price series can produce a different signal.
How the moving averages are calculated
A simple moving average (SMA) adds the selected number of observations and divides by that number. For an n-day SMA, the calculation is:
SMAn = (P1 + P2 + ... + Pn) / n
For a 50-day SMA, the calculation uses the chosen 50 daily prices. For a 200-day SMA, it uses the chosen 200 daily prices. “Moving” means the window rolls forward: when a new daily observation enters, the oldest observation leaves.

For example, suppose a chart has a 50-day SMA of $98 and a 200-day SMA of $101. If the next sequence of prices pulls the 50-day average down until it is $100.90 while the 200-day average is $100.95, the shorter average is now below the longer one. That illustrative arithmetic does not by itself say what the next price will do. It only identifies the relationship traders call a death cross.
What does a death cross mean to traders?
A reading of relative weakness
The immediate interpretation is that the average of more recent prices has become lower than the average of a much longer period. Traders may see that as evidence that an earlier uptrend has weakened, that selling pressure has persisted, or that the security has entered a less favorable trend phase.
A lagging trend signal
Both averages are built from historical prices. The cross usually follows a period in which prices have already declined enough to pull the 50-day average beneath the 200-day average. It therefore confirms a deterioration that has developed over time rather than identifying the first day of weakness.

One input, not a trading command
Technical analysis uses indicators derived from price, volume or open interest. FINRA contrasts that approach with fundamental analysis, which examines a company’s records and business circumstances. A trader may use a death cross as one input alongside support and resistance, trend structure, volume, earnings and balance-sheet information, interest rates, sector behavior and broader market conditions. The crossover does not instruct someone to buy, hold, sell, short or hedge a particular security.

You can inspect the pattern in most charting software that allows moving-average overlays. The exact menu names differ, but the process is consistent:
- Choose the instrument. Select the stock, fund, index or other security you want to study. Record whether the chart uses adjusted or unadjusted prices, because splits, dividends and other adjustments can affect the averages.
- Set the time frame. Use daily observations if you are applying the conventional 50-day and 200-day definition. A 50-period and 200-period overlay on an intraday chart is a different rule.
- Add two simple moving averages. Set one length to 50 and the other to 200. Confirm that both are simple moving averages if you intend to reproduce the conventional definition.
- Locate the intersection. The death cross is the point at which the plotted 50-day line passes below the 200-day line. Note the session date and whether the move was present at the close or only during the session.
- Check for confirmation rules. Some traders require the shorter average to remain below the longer one for a specified number of closes, or wait for price to break a prior low. There is no universal confirmation rule established by the definition itself, so state the rule before comparing results.
- Record the surrounding evidence. Note the price trend, trading volume, volatility, sector and index behavior, and any material fundamental developments. This prevents the line crossing from being treated as the entire analysis.
How traders add context before acting
Price structure
A cross accompanied by lower highs and lower lows may be read differently from a cross occurring while price holds a well-tested support level. Traders often examine whether the security is below or above prior swing points, whether the 200-day average itself is rising or falling, and whether price quickly recovers above both averages.

Volume and breadth
Volume can show whether a move occurred with broad participation or on relatively light activity. For an index, market breadth and the behavior of constituent stocks may provide context that a single line cannot. These observations do not remove the signal’s lag; they help determine whether the crossover fits other evidence.
Fundamentals and external conditions
Company results, guidance, debt, valuation, economic data, interest rates and sector-specific events can affect future prices even when a chart looks unchanged. A technical indicator cannot incorporate all of those variables. A trader using the death cross as part of a broader process should explain how those non-chart factors affect the decision.

Why a death cross can be wrong
Prices may reverse after the crossover
Moving-average rules can generate false signals and whipsaws. A whipsaw occurs when the shorter average crosses below the longer average, then reverses and crosses back as the market changes direction. Sideways or rapidly reversing markets are especially difficult for trend-following averages.
Best Value
The signal is sensitive to data choices
The result can change with the underlying security, the price series, the observation date and the confirmation method. An SEC-hosted offering document illustrates that a strategy’s results can differ when applied to an index rather than an exchange-traded fund and when observation dates change. That illustration concerns a specific strategy and period; it is not a general accuracy rate for death crosses.
It cannot establish future returns
A historical pattern does not prove that the next move will match earlier examples. FINRA states in its investor-education article “What is Momentum Investing?” published August 12, 2025: “Remember that past performance doesn’t guarantee future returns.” The warning applies whether the past result came from a moving-average rule, a discretionary interpretation or a broader strategy.
How to evaluate a death-cross rule fairly
When comparing two interpretations or testing a trading rule, define every material choice. Otherwise, apparently conflicting conclusions may simply be measuring different things.
Recommended Free Tools
- Averages: state the periods and whether they are simple, exponential or another type.
- Instrument and price series: identify the stock, index or fund and whether prices are adjusted, unadjusted, closing, intraday or another series.
- Crossover date and confirmation: specify whether the event is recorded intraday, at the close or only after one or more subsequent closes.
- Evaluation horizon: state whether the outcome is measured over days, weeks, months or years.
- Costs and risk: disclose commissions, spreads, taxes, borrowing costs, dividends, position sizing and drawdowns when evaluating performance.
The reviewed evidence does not establish a universal optimal setting or a general predictive hit rate. A percentage presented without these specifications can create a false sense of precision.
Common interpretation mistakes
- Calling it a forecast: the cross records a relationship between two historical averages; it does not forecast a guaranteed decline.
- Ignoring the lag: the market may have fallen substantially before the averages intersect.
- Mixing time frames: a 50-period/200-period cross on an hourly chart is not the conventional daily 50-day/200-day signal.
- Changing the rule after seeing the result: moving the confirmation date or choosing a favorable price series can make a historical comparison misleading.
- Treating every asset as identical: an index, an exchange-traded fund and an individual stock can produce different signals and different outcomes.
- Using the line without a risk plan: a bearish interpretation does not specify an entry price, exit, position size, stop, tax consequence or hedging method.
What a careful trader can conclude
A conventional death cross tells you that the 50-day simple moving average has fallen below the 200-day simple moving average. That is useful information about the recent trend relative to a longer historical baseline. It may support a bearish thesis when other evidence agrees, but it may also arrive after much of a decline has already occurred or be followed by a reversal.
The disciplined interpretation is therefore conditional: identify exactly what crossed, when and on which data; examine price, volume, fundamentals and market conditions; and test any rule with clearly stated assumptions. The pattern can organize analysis, but it cannot replace judgment or provide certainty about the next return.
