A custom thumbnail is the preview image you choose for a YouTube video instead of one of YouTube’s automatically generated suggestions. It appears before someone opens the video and gives viewers a quick, honest snapshot of what they can expect. Verified accounts can upload custom thumbnails in YouTube Studio, subject to YouTube’s feature eligibility and Community Guidelines.
What a custom thumbnail does
When viewers browse Home, Search, subscriptions, or a channel page, YouTube pairs each video title with a thumbnail. That image is the video’s visual invitation to click. A custom thumbnail lets you control that invitation with a frame, illustration, text treatment, or composition designed for the specific video.
YouTube may otherwise select still frames automatically. Those frames can be useful, but they may show an unflattering expression, a transitional moment, or an image that does not explain the video quickly. A custom image can establish the subject, outcome, and tone before the click. It should still represent the actual content: an exaggerated image that promises something the video does not deliver can hurt viewer trust and violate policy.
Custom thumbnail versus an automatically generated frame
| Aspect | Custom thumbnail | Automatic suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| Who chooses it | The creator uploads an image | YouTube selects frames or suggestions |
| Design control | Full control over image, crop, text, and branding | Limited control |
| Eligibility | Account verification and feature eligibility are required | Available when YouTube can generate a preview |
| Policy responsibility | Creator is responsible for the uploaded image | YouTube selects the frame |
Who can upload one
YouTube requires account verification for custom-thumbnail uploads. Verification does not guarantee access to every advanced feature, so check the channel’s feature-eligibility page if the upload control is absent. Copyright strikes, Community Guidelines strikes, channel history, and regional rules can also affect access.
#1 Best Overall
YouTube applies a daily limit to custom-thumbnail uploads. The exact allowance varies by country or region and by channel history. If Studio displays “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached,” wait 24 hours before trying again.
Recommended size, ratio, format, and file limits
Use the specifications that match the video type. The dimensions below are recommendations from YouTube’s guidance; the minimums and file limits are separate constraints.
| Video type | Recommended canvas | Aspect ratio | Minimum dimension | Supported examples | Maximum file size |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 16:9 | Width of at least 640 pixels | JPG or PNG | 2 MB on mobile upload; 50 MB on desktop upload |
| Shorts | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 9:16 | Height of at least 640 pixels | JPG or PNG | 50 MB |
Keep important text and faces away from the edges because YouTube overlays interface elements in some placements. Export a sharp image at the correct ratio, then inspect it at small size on a phone. If a file exceeds the limit, reduce pixel dimensions or export with stronger JPEG compression while checking that text remains legible.
Vertical-video caveat
A vertical video can accept a 16:9 custom thumbnail, but YouTube may replace that image with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. For a Short, design a 9:16 image and use the computer-based Shorts workflow.
How to add a custom thumbnail to a regular video
Desktop YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content in the left navigation.
- Click the video you want to edit.
- In the Thumbnail section, select Upload file.
- Choose the prepared JPG or PNG from your computer and wait for the preview to finish processing.
- Review the crop and readability at small size, then click Save.
You can choose one of YouTube’s suggested images instead. On accounts where it is available, Ask Studio can also generate suggestions; those suggestions do not replace the normal upload option.
Mobile YouTube or YouTube Studio
- Open the YouTube app or YouTube Studio and sign in to the channel.
- Open the video and choose Edit thumbnail.
- Tap Custom thumbnail, select the image, and confirm the preview.
- Save the change.
Mobile video thumbnails have a 2 MB limit. If the app rejects a larger file, resize or recompress it and try again.
How to add a custom thumbnail to a Short
Custom Shorts thumbnails are currently uploaded only through YouTube Studio on a computer. During Shorts upload or editing, use the thumbnail upload control and select a 9:16 image. The mobile apps do not currently provide the same custom-upload workflow for Shorts.
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content and select the Short, or begin a Shorts upload.
- Choose the thumbnail control and upload the 9:16 JPG or PNG.
- Save or publish the Short, then verify how it appears in the relevant feeds.
Design a thumbnail that earns an informed click
Show the subject immediately
Use one dominant subject: the device being tested, the person explaining the result, or the before-and-after state. A clear focal point survives the small cards used across YouTube.
Recommended Free Tools
Use short, readable wording
If text is necessary, limit it to a few words that add information rather than repeating the title. Use strong contrast, a large type size, and enough margin for cropping. Check the image at phone width before publishing.
Match the promise to the video
Do not use a shocked expression, product, or result that never appears. Misleading thumbnails can increase an initial click while reducing watch time and viewer confidence, and policy violations can remove thumbnail privileges.
Keep a recognizable system
Consistent colors, type, and placement can help returning viewers identify your videos, but vary the actual subject so a channel page does not look like a wall of duplicates.
Policy rules and penalties
Every custom thumbnail must follow YouTube Community Guidelines. YouTube gives nudity or sexually provocative imagery, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples of material that can lead to rejection and a strike. A rejected image must be replaced with a compliant one; repeatedly violating the rules can remove custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or, in serious or repeated cases, contribute to account termination.
Rank #3
Accuracy matters even when an image is not removed. Avoid fake results, unrelated celebrities, fabricated quotes, or visual claims the video cannot support. Consider copyright and permissions for photographs, logos, and artwork before uploading.
Measure whether a thumbnail works
Thumbnail-impression click-through rate
In YouTube Analytics, thumbnail-impression click-through rate is the percentage of viewers who watched after seeing a thumbnail impression. It is not a universal click rate for every location where a link appears. YouTube excludes, among other contexts, external websites and apps, the YouTube mobile website, YouTube Kids, YouTube Music, email and notifications, and some exposures where the image was not sufficiently visible.
Compare videos with similar audience, topic, traffic source, and age. A higher rate is not automatically better if the thumbnail attracts viewers who leave immediately; use watch time and audience retention alongside the rate.
Desktop A/B testing
Eligible creators can use A/B test titles & thumbnails on desktop to compare up to three combinations. The channel needs advanced features. Tests exclude Shorts, scheduled live streams, videos made for kids, videos for mature audiences, and private videos. YouTube selects the winning combination by watch time, not click-through rate alone. A test may finish in a few days or take up to two weeks.
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer and select an eligible video.
- Open the title-and-thumbnail testing control.
- Add up to three title/thumbnail combinations.
- Start the test and leave the combinations unchanged while YouTube collects results.
- Review the reported winner and the watch-time outcome before applying a permanent choice.
Why the upload option is missing or fails
No “Upload file” button
- Verify the account and confirm that custom-thumbnail features are enabled.
- Check whether a strike, channel-history restriction, or regional eligibility rule is affecting the channel.
- For a Short, move to YouTube Studio on a computer; the current mobile workflow does not support custom upload.
“Daily custom thumbnail limit reached”
The limit is variable. Stop retrying and try again after 24 hours. Repeated attempts will not increase the allowance.
File rejected for size or format
- Export as JPG or PNG.
- Use 16:9 for a regular video or 9:16 for a Short.
- Check the applicable 2 MB mobile limit or 50 MB desktop/Shorts limit.
- Confirm that a regular-video image is at least 640 pixels wide, or that a Shorts image is at least 640 pixels high.
Image looks cropped or replaced
Review the vertical-video caveat: YouTube can generate a 4:5 image for Home, Explore, and subscription pages. Check the watch feed and non-mobile placements as well, because different surfaces may display different treatments.

Thumbnail was removed
Replace imagery that conflicts with Community Guidelines, then review the channel’s enforcement notice. Do not re-upload a slightly altered version of the same prohibited content; repeated violations can suspend thumbnail privileges.
