A brown dwarf is a substellar object that forms when a cloud of gas collapses, much as a star does, but never becomes hot and dense enough to sustain hydrogen fusion in its core. It can still produce faint, intrinsic radiation—especially infrared light—from heat left over from formation and from gravitational contraction.
Brown dwarfs therefore sit between stars and planets in several respects. Their formation can be star-like, while their cool, cloudy atmospheres can resemble those of giant planets. The often-quoted boundary of about 13 times Jupiter’s mass is a useful rule of thumb for deuterium burning, not a universal dividing line.

What a brown dwarf is
“Substellar” means an object below the mass needed for ordinary, sustained hydrogen fusion. In a star, gravity compresses the central gas until the core reaches the temperature and pressure required to fuse hydrogen into helium. That reaction supplies energy for most of the star’s life and is what makes a star a star in the physical sense.
A brown dwarf begins differently from a planet in the usual picture: it can form directly from a collapsing region of gas and dust rather than assembling inside the disk surrounding a newborn star. The collapsing material does not contain enough mass to maintain hydrogen fusion. The object may briefly burn deuterium—a heavier form of hydrogen—if its core becomes hot enough, but deuterium burning is limited and does not provide the long-term power source of a star.

After formation, a brown dwarf gradually cools and fades. It does not switch off suddenly; its internal heat leaks outward over millions or billions of years. Young brown dwarfs can be relatively warm and bright in infrared wavelengths. Older, lower-mass examples can become extremely cool and faint in visible light while remaining detectable through infrared radiation.
The name “brown dwarf” describes this failed transition to sustained stellar fusion, not a brown-colored surface. Many are too dim to see with the unaided eye, and their emitted spectrum can include deep red and infrared wavelengths rather than ordinary brown visible light.
Brown dwarf, star and planet: the distinctions that matter
Mass alone cannot answer every classification question. Astronomers compare how an object formed, whether it sustains hydrogen fusion, whether it produces its own light, and what evidence is available about its history.

How a brown dwarf differs from a star
The decisive difference is hydrogen fusion
A star’s core is hot and dense enough for the proton–proton chain (or, in more massive stars, other hydrogen-fusion pathways) to operate continuously. The energy released balances the star’s gravity and supports a long-lived stellar structure.
A brown dwarf never reaches the sustained hydrogen-burning condition. It can shine because it is hot, because it is contracting under gravity, and because it radiates energy stored during formation. Those sources decline with time. As the object cools, its peak emission shifts farther into the infrared.

Both can form from collapsing gas
Brown dwarfs are not simply small stars that have been cut down after formation. In the star-like formation scenario, turbulence and gravity fragment a molecular cloud into condensations. Some condensations acquire enough mass for hydrogen fusion; others remain below that threshold and become brown dwarfs. Interactions in a young stellar cluster can also eject a low-mass condensation before it gathers more material.

Why “failed star” is only a shorthand
“Failed star” is useful when explaining the missing hydrogen fusion, but it can mislead if it suggests that every brown dwarf began as an ordinary star and merely failed late in life. A brown dwarf is a distinct substellar outcome of gravitational collapse. Its interior physics, cooling path and atmosphere differ from those of a hydrogen-burning star.
How a brown dwarf differs from a planet
Formation is the clearest conceptual contrast
NASA’s overview describes planets as bodies that build up from leftover material in a disk around a newborn star. Dust grains collide, rocks grow, and a core can accumulate gas. Brown dwarfs can instead form directly when gas collapses under its own gravity, without first assembling as a planetary body in a circumstellar disk.
That distinction is scientifically important but observationally difficult. For a companion orbiting a star, astronomers may study the orbit, the age of the system and the mass of the object. For a free-floating body, there may be no parent star to identify and no surviving record of where it formed.
Intrinsic infrared emission versus reflected light
A mature planet seen in visible light is usually detected because it reflects light from its star. A brown dwarf emits its own radiation. Young giant planets can also radiate heat left over from formation, so intrinsic emission by itself does not settle the classification. The spectrum, age, mass estimate and probable origin must be considered together.

Brown-dwarf atmospheres can contain clouds and molecules familiar from giant planets. Water, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide leave signatures in infrared spectra. Similar chemistry does not prove a shared formation history: temperature, pressure, gravity and atmospheric circulation can produce planet-like clouds in an object that formed through star-like collapse.

What the 13-Jupiter-mass boundary really means
A commonly repeated rule says that an object above about 13 times Jupiter’s mass can burn deuterium and is therefore a brown dwarf, while a lighter object is a planet. This is a convenient approximation, not a sharp universal border.
Deuterium burning depends on the object’s composition, structure and the criterion used for how much deuterium must burn. In a 2011 Astrophysical Journal study by Arthur and colleagues, modeled thresholds ranged from about 11.0 to 16.3 Jupiter masses under the metallicity and burn-fraction assumptions examined. The often-quoted 13-Jupiter-mass value sits near the middle of that model-dependent range.
The threshold is therefore best used as a guide to interior physics. It tells you when a body may become hot enough for a temporary deuterium-burning phase; it does not, by itself, prove how that body formed. Two objects with similar masses could have different origins, and two objects formed in similar environments could receive different labels when their measured masses fall near the uncertain range.

Exoplanet terminology has also been discussed through working definitions, but those discussions are not the same as a universally binding General Assembly rule that resolves every brown-dwarf case. Astronomers consequently report the evidence and its uncertainty rather than treating 13 Jupiter masses as a legal boundary.
How astronomers find and study brown dwarfs
Infrared detection
Brown dwarfs are faint in visible wavelengths, particularly after they have cooled. Infrared instruments are better suited because the objects’ thermal emission is strongest there. Surveys can identify candidates by their colors, proper motion and brightness across several infrared bands.
Spectroscopy
A spectrum spreads the object’s light into wavelengths, allowing researchers to identify molecules and estimate temperature, gravity and cloud properties. Methane absorption was especially important in the first clear confirmation of a brown dwarf. Spectroscopy can also distinguish a cool substellar atmosphere from the spectrum of a normal star.

What recent surveys reveal
A NASA/JPL report dated October 8, 2026, described a SPHEREx analysis of 37 nearby brown dwarfs. The sample covered an unusually wide temperature span, from about 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit down to minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The spectra showed atmospheric water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane.

They show instead how varied the class can be and why a single-temperature model is inadequate. The researchers reported chemically rich, cloudy atmospheres and found that current atmospheric models struggle with some transitions between cloud regimes. Zafar Rustamkulov, lead author of the study and a scientist at IPAC/Caltech, said, “We’re still learning how complex they are.” Coauthor J. Davy Kirkpatrick added, “No two brown dwarfs are alike. Even at the same temperature, their spectra look quite distinct.”
Webb spectroscopy provides complementary detail for especially faint or young objects. Its instruments can separate molecular absorption features and help determine whether a candidate’s atmosphere is more consistent with a very low-mass brown dwarf or a giant planet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The first clear evidence: Gliese 229B
NASA dates the first clear evidence of a brown dwarf to 1995, when astronomers identified Gliese 229B orbiting the red star Gliese 229. Its infrared spectrum contained methane, a molecule associated with cool giant-planet atmospheres and not expected in a normal star’s hot photosphere. NASA/Hubble reported an estimated mass of about 20 to 50 times Jupiter’s mass.
Gliese 229B demonstrated why infrared observations matter. An object can be too dim and cool to resemble a conventional star in visible light while still carrying a distinctive chemical signature in the infrared. The discovery also established that a companion can be massive enough to be substellar without sustaining hydrogen fusion.
Why some objects cannot be labeled confidently
The boundary becomes especially difficult for young, isolated objects with only a few Jupiter masses. In 2023, NASA’s Webb team reported a free-floating candidate in the young IC 348 cluster with an estimated mass of three to four Jupiter masses. The team considered a brown-dwarf interpretation more likely but could not rule out the possibility that it was a planet ejected from a planetary system.
Best Value
The example does not show that all low-mass free-floating bodies are planets or that all are brown dwarfs. It shows the practical limitation of using a mass estimate without a secure formation history. A very young object can still be hot from formation, making its brightness compatible with either a low-mass brown dwarf or an expelled giant planet. More observations of its atmosphere, age, motion and surrounding population are needed to narrow the possibilities.
As NASA Webb lead author Kevin Luhman of Pennsylvania State University put it, “One basic question you’ll find in every astronomy textbook is, what are the smallest stars? That’s what we’re trying to answer.” In practice, the question also asks where the planet category ends when formation evidence is incomplete.
Common misconceptions
“Brown dwarfs are failed planets.”
Not necessarily. A brown dwarf can form by direct gas collapse, before a planetary system’s assembly process. Its atmosphere may look planet-like, but appearance does not establish origin.
“Every object above 13 Jupiter masses is automatically a brown dwarf.”
No. The 13-Jupiter-mass figure summarizes a model-dependent deuterium-burning convention. Composition and the adopted burn criterion shift the modeled threshold, and formation evidence may point in a different direction.
“Brown dwarfs are completely dark.”
They are faint, not lightless. Their own thermal radiation is strongest in infrared wavelengths. Young examples can be much brighter than old, cool examples.
“A planet must orbit a star.”
Most planets are found in planetary systems, but astronomers also discuss free-floating planetary-mass objects. Whether a particular isolated body should be called a planet or a brown dwarf depends on evidence about its mass, origin and physical history.
The practical answer
A brown dwarf is best understood as a gas-collapse object that never sustains hydrogen fusion. It is star-like in how it may form, planet-like in the complexity of its cool atmosphere, and distinct from both because it radiates its own diminishing infrared heat without the long-term engine of a star. The 13-Jupiter-mass number is a useful signpost for deuterium burning, not a universal verdict. When mass, age or formation history is uncertain—as in the Webb IC 348 candidate—astronomers appropriately leave the classification open while gathering better infrared and spectroscopic evidence.
