Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →6G is the name commonly used for the next generation of mobile communications. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) calls its global framework IMT-2030, following 5G’s IMT-2020 designation. It is still a standards project, not a mobile service you can buy today. The framework expands 5G’s capabilities while adding goals such as AI integrated with communications and integrated sensing.
ITU’s work was still progressing in 2026. Candidate radio-interface submissions were expected from early 2027, with final standards prospectively targeted for 2030. That timetable describes international standards work—not a promise that 6G phones, coverage or subscriptions will appear everywhere in 2030.

What 6G means officially
“6G” is an industry shorthand. The formal ITU name for the next generation is IMT-2030. 5G is formally known as IMT-2020. The labels identify generations in the international mobile-communications framework; they do not identify one product, one company’s network or one guaranteed set of user experiences.
The ITU framework approved in 2023 describes a direction for mobile systems after 5G. It identifies 15 capabilities in all. Nine are derived from capabilities already associated with 5G systems, while the broader framework adds or emphasizes new capabilities and use scenarios. This continuity matters: 6G is not defined as a clean replacement that makes every 5G network obsolete. It is a new generation intended to extend what 5G can do and support additional types of connectivity.

Standards documents set common technical requirements and evaluation methods so equipment from different suppliers can interoperate. They do not automatically create a network, allocate spectrum in every country or guarantee that an operator will deploy every feature. A final standard can support many implementation choices.
6G versus 5G: the practical difference
The most useful comparison is not “6G is faster.” The distinction is the scope of the systems being designed and their stage of development.
| Area | 5G | 6G |
|---|---|---|
| Formal ITU generation | IMT-2020 | IMT-2030 |
| Standards status | Established generation with deployed systems in many markets | Framework and evaluation process still in progress in 2026 |
| Primary direction | Enhanced mobile broadband, very reliable low-latency communication and massive machine-type communication | Those continuing capabilities plus immersive communication, AI and communication, integrated sensing and communication, and ubiquitous connectivity |
| Novelty of the framework | Defines the 5G generation | Of 15 identified capabilities, ITU says nine derive from existing 5G systems |
| Availability | Commercial networks and compatible devices exist, depending on country and operator | No consumer service or universal device availability is established by the cited ITU material |
| What the dates mean | A generation already standardized and being deployed | A standards roadmap, with prospective approval targeted for 2030 |
There is no defensible single number that summarizes the difference from the available evidence. The ITU material cited for this article does not establish a guaranteed 6G peak speed, latency figure, coverage gain or battery-life improvement. Those values will depend on the final specifications, spectrum, network design, devices and local deployment conditions.
What could 6G enable?
ITU’s 2026 description identifies six proposed IMT-2030 usage scenarios. They are intended directions for evaluation and design, not a list of retail services available now.
Immersive communication
Immersive communication concerns richer, interactive experiences than ordinary voice calls or conventional video. Depending on how products are designed, it could support more convincing three-dimensional or spatial interactions, real-time shared environments and other forms of media that require high data rates and consistent responsiveness.
The scenario is broader than a promise of a particular headset or hologram. A standard can provide communication capabilities; developers and operators still have to create applications, devices and content that use them. Cost, comfort, privacy and accessibility will determine whether an immersive service is useful outside demonstrations.
Hyper-reliable and low-latency communication
This scenario targets applications where delayed or interrupted communication is especially damaging. Examples could include industrial control, coordinated machines or remote interaction in which a dependable response matters more than an occasional burst of maximum speed.

“Low latency” is not the same as instant response. End-to-end behavior also depends on the application, device processing, transport network and server location. A radio requirement alone cannot guarantee the experience of a particular service.
Massive communication
Massive communication is aimed at connecting very large numbers of devices, sensors and other endpoints. The goal is to make extensive deployments—such as monitoring equipment, buildings or environmental conditions—manageable without treating every endpoint like a high-bandwidth smartphone.
Large scale creates practical issues beyond radio capacity. Devices need affordable hardware, long operating life, secure provisioning and a way to handle software updates. The IMT-2030 scenario describes the communications problem; it does not specify the price or energy consumption of every connected sensor.
Ubiquitous connectivity
Ubiquitous connectivity describes an aspiration to make useful connectivity available across a wider range of locations and circumstances, including underserved areas. It is concerned with continuity and reach, not merely the fastest service in dense urban zones.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Whether connectivity becomes genuinely ubiquitous will depend on national policy, spectrum, economics, backhaul, geography and investment. A global framework cannot by itself ensure that a remote community receives coverage or that service is affordable there.
AI and communication
AI and communication treats artificial intelligence as part of the communications system rather than only as an application running after data arrives. That could involve networks that use AI for management or optimization and communication systems designed to support AI-intensive applications.
This direction raises governance questions as well as engineering ones. Network operators will need to address security, reliability, data handling and explainability. AI-assisted operation should not be read as a guarantee that every 6G network will make autonomous decisions or expose the same features to consumers.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC)
Integrated sensing and communication combines transmitting data with sensing functions such as detecting or locating objects. In principle, the same underlying radio environment could support communications and information about movement or surroundings.
ISAC could be relevant to transport, industrial monitoring, public infrastructure and spatial awareness. It also makes privacy and authorization central design issues: sensing a space can reveal information about people and activities even when the system is not carrying a conventional camera feed. The scenario is a standards objective, not evidence that consumer networks currently provide a general-purpose radar service.
Capabilities, requirements and real-world performance
In a 2026 update, ITU described 20 draft technical performance requirements for IMT-2030, including seven it characterized as new and specific to 6G. These are minimum levels used to evaluate candidate technologies. They are not measurements from a finished nationwide network and are not a promise that a phone will experience every value.
“While the requirements establish minimum performance levels, they do not restrict implementation approaches or guarantee real-world deployment performance.”
This distinction prevents a common mistake in 6G coverage: turning a target into a retail specification. Final networks may differ because operators use different spectrum, layouts, backhaul, scheduling policies and device categories. A requirement can establish a test threshold while leaving several engineering paths open.
The framework also identifies sustainability, security and resilience, connecting the unconnected and ubiquitous intelligence as design principles. These principles broaden the question from “How fast is it?” to “How efficiently, safely and consistently can the system serve people and machines?” They are important goals, but they do not establish a completed product feature list.
Where the 6G standards process stood in 2026
The schedule has several separate milestones. Keeping them separate avoids treating a standards meeting as a commercial launch.

When 2030 appears in a 6G headline, it normally refers to the prospective completion of international technology standards. It does not mean that all countries will switch on 6G at once. Commercial deployment would still require national spectrum decisions, operator investment, network testing, compatible equipment, certified devices and a business case.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Rollouts would also be uneven. An operator might introduce selected capabilities in limited areas, use 6G alongside 5G for years, or delay features that are expensive or difficult to support. Device availability could follow the standard by several years, and a phone that carries a “6G-ready” label would not necessarily support every IMT-2030 capability.
The cited ITU sources do not establish consumer launch dates, operator rollout plans, prices, device requirements or which features will arrive first. Those questions need separate, authoritative evidence from regulators, operators and equipment or device manufacturers.
Why 6G is more than a faster 5G
5G already introduced a framework that serves several different categories of use: high-capacity mobile broadband, highly reliable and low-latency communication, and connections for large numbers of machines. IMT-2030 carries that continuity forward while adding scenarios that change what “a network” is expected to do.
AI integration asks the network to participate in intelligent processing and management. ISAC asks communication infrastructure to provide sensing functions. Ubiquitous connectivity emphasizes reach and continuity, while immersive communication focuses on richer interaction. Together, these goals make 6G a broader systems agenda rather than a simple speed upgrade.

More sensing can mean more privacy controls. More intelligence can mean greater security and accountability requirements. More coverage can increase energy and infrastructure costs. More immersive traffic can increase demand for capacity. Standards work has to balance these objectives instead of maximizing one headline metric.

How to judge a 6G claim
- Check the status: Is the statement about the IMT-2030 framework, a draft requirement, a candidate technology, a laboratory demonstration or a deployed service?
- Check the date: A 2023 roadmap expectation and a 2026 process milestone are not the same as a final approval.
- Check the scope: Does the claim apply to a particular test setup, frequency band, device class or network, or does it imply every future 6G connection?
- Check the source: Prefer an ITU document, a national regulator or a named operator’s technical announcement over an unqualified marketing headline.
- Check the word “could”: Proposed scenarios describe possibilities. They do not show that a product exists or that users will receive the capability automatically.
What 6G could mean for different readers
For phone users
There is no action required today to obtain 6G service. A current 5G phone cannot be assumed to support IMT-2030, and the available evidence does not establish when compatible consumer devices will be sold. The useful near-term question is whether your existing 4G or 5G service meets your needs, not whether a 6G upgrade is imminent.
For businesses
Organizations considering automation, sensing or large device fleets should treat 6G as a planning horizon. Define the reliability, coverage, security and data requirements of the use case first. Do not base a capital purchase or a service-level promise on an unfinalized 6G target.
For developers
The six scenarios indicate areas worth monitoring: immersive media, dependable low-latency control, large-scale devices, AI-enabled communications and sensing. Application architecture should remain adaptable because final interfaces, device capabilities and deployment economics are not settled.
For policymakers and communities
Ubiquitous connectivity and connecting the unconnected are explicit design priorities, but outcomes will depend on affordability, infrastructure and local decisions. Standards participation is only one part of closing coverage and access gaps.
The bottom line on 6G
6G is the emerging IMT-2030 generation: an ITU-led standards framework that extends 5G while pursuing immersive communication, highly reliable low-latency links, massive connectivity, ubiquitous connectivity, AI integrated with communications and integrated sensing. Nine of the framework’s 15 identified capabilities derive from 5G, so the transition is evolutionary as well as ambitious.
As of 2026, 6G remains under standardization. Draft requirements and evaluation guidelines are milestones, not proof of commercial performance. Candidate radio submissions were expected from 2027, with final standards prospectively targeted for 2030. Treat any claim about a specific launch date, phone, price, coverage map or guaranteed speed as unconfirmed unless a responsible operator, regulator or device maker provides evidence for that particular market and product.
