3bf89745_stp.exe cannot be identified as legitimate or malicious from its filename alone. No authoritative source in the available evidence identifies its publisher, product, installer origin, or exact hash. Do not open it until you check its complete path, digital signature, SHA-256 hash, and security reputation.

The correct fix depends on what Windows is reporting: a missing file after an application was removed, a security product blocking or quarantining an unknown executable, or a damaged installer. Preserve the file long enough to collect evidence, then use the matching cleanup or reinstall procedure below.

What the name 3bf89745_stp.exe does—and does not—tell you

The filename has two recognizable parts: a random-looking hexadecimal-style prefix, 3bf89745, and the _stp.exe suffix. Neither part is a Windows publisher identity. Legitimate installers can use generated names, and malware can copy the names of trusted files or generate plausible random names. A filename is therefore a clue to investigate, not a safety verdict.

No exact hash, named publisher, product association, or legitimate installer provenance has been established for 3bf89745_stp.exe. There is also no published prevalence or safety percentage for this exact file. Treat an unexpected copy as untrusted until its local metadata and scan results provide stronger evidence.

A similarly named file is not proof either. A sample called 33068e87_stp.exe had a recorded publisher and signature and was reported as 0/68 detections by herdProtect in an analysis dated September 24, 2026. That result applies only to that sample’s exact hash. Other random-number _stp.exe files have been classified as a general threat or as adware/downloader. Hashes, signatures, origin, and behavior matter more than the naming pattern.

How to judge whether the file is safe

Use all five checks below. One reassuring signal does not cancel several suspicious ones, and an absent signature alone does not prove malware.

Check More reassuring More concerning What it means
Provenance You downloaded a known application from its official publisher and can match the installer activity to the file. The file appeared without an installation, email attachment, download, or other explanation. Known origin gives you a product and support path; an unexplained arrival requires security triage.
Location A documented directory belonging to the application that installed it. %TEMP%, Downloads, a startup folder, a user profile subfolder, or another unexpected directory. Location is context, not proof. Legitimate installers use temporary folders, but persistence from an unusual path deserves scrutiny.
Digital signature Properties shows a valid signature from a publisher you recognize, and Windows says the signature is valid. No signature, an invalid signature, an unknown signer, or a signer that does not match the application. An invalid or missing signature removes a useful trust signal; it does not by itself establish maliciousness.
SHA-256 reputation The exact hash has no detections in a reputable multi-engine service and matches a known installer. The exact hash has detections, conflicting classifications, or no useful record combined with suspicious provenance. Hash matching is more reliable than searching a filename, because unrelated files can share a name.
Behavior It runs only when the known application is installed and performs the application’s expected work. It persists through startup or scheduled tasks, creates copies, makes unexplained network connections, or repeatedly returns after deletion. Unexpected persistence or recreation points to a component that needs containment and a broader scan.

Collect evidence without executing the file

1. Do not open or “test” it

Do not double-click the executable, run it from a command prompt, or disable security software to make it start. Leave the file in place long enough to record evidence. If it is already running, avoid interacting with it beyond the process-identification steps below.

2. Record the complete path and size

  1. Open File Explorer and locate the file named 3bf89745_stp.exe.
  2. Hold Shift, right-click the file, and choose Copy as path, or open Properties and record the Location and filename together.
  3. Record the file size and the creation and modification times shown on the General tab.

A copy in a temporary, download, startup, or otherwise unexpected directory deserves extra scrutiny. Do not delete it before recording the path if the error message or security alert may be needed to identify the parent application.

3. Check the Digital Signatures tab

  1. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  2. Open Digital Signatures, if the tab is present.
  3. Select each signature and choose Details.
  4. Record the signer and whether Windows reports that the digital signature is valid.

Compare the signer with the application you believe created the file. A valid signature from an unrelated publisher is not a match, and a missing signature is a reason to investigate rather than a final verdict.

4. Calculate the SHA-256 hash

Use PowerShell with the full path you recorded. Quoting the path handles spaces in folder names.

Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpath3bf89745_stp.exe" -Algorithm SHA256

Windows also includes CertUtil:

certutil -hashfile "C:fullpath3bf89745_stp.exe" SHA256

Copy the resulting 64-character SHA-256 value exactly. Search that hash, rather than only the filename, in a reputable multi-engine malware-reputation service. A result for a different hash is not evidence about this file.

5. Identify a running process with Process Explorer

If the executable is active, Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer can show the process, the files and directories it has opened or loaded, and the loaded DLLs. Microsoft lists Process Explorer version 17.14 with a publication date of September 10, 2026.

  1. Download Process Explorer from Microsoft’s Sysinternals distribution and start it from a trusted location.
  2. Use the process search to find 3bf89745_stp.exe.
  3. Open the process properties and record the image path, command line, signer information, handles, and loaded DLLs.
  4. Compare the image path with the path you recorded in File Explorer. A process name that points to a different copy is important evidence.

Do not terminate or delete a process merely because its name looks random. First capture the path and metadata; then contain it through your security product if the evidence is suspicious.

6. Scan with updated Microsoft protection

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
  3. Select Full scan and start it with Microsoft Defender definitions up to date.

Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) is a separate monthly utility. Microsoft describes MSRT as finding and removing prevalent malware, while also stating that it does not replace full-fledged malware detection and removal. The Microsoft download page lists MSRT version 5.146 with a publication date of October 13, 2026. Run it only from Microsoft’s own download source and let your normal antivirus remain enabled.

Microsoft Safety Scanner is intended as a more comprehensive second-opinion scan. It is also not a replacement for ongoing antivirus protection. If Defender or another trusted scanner identifies the file, follow that product’s quarantine or removal action rather than launching the executable to investigate it.

7. Quarantine first when the evidence is bad

If the exact hash is detected, the file is being recreated, or its behavior is unexplained, use the security product’s quarantine function. Quarantine preserves the item in an isolated location while preventing normal execution. Do not restore it simply because Windows later displays a missing-file message; verify the parent application and the hash first.

8. Check for persistence if it returns

A file that reappears after quarantine or deletion may be recreated by an installer, startup entry, scheduled task, or another component.

  1. Open Task Manager and inspect Startup apps. Disable an entry only after confirming its command path and relationship to the unknown file.
  2. Open Task Scheduler and inspect Task Scheduler Library. Look for actions that launch the exact path or a related temporary executable.
  3. Check the application that originally installed the file. Uninstall an unneeded, known application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps rather than deleting random files from its directory.
  4. If normal Windows execution interferes with cleanup, use Windows Recovery’s Startup Settings to enter Safe Mode, then repeat the scan and quarantine process.

Microsoft threat-removal guidance documents Safe Mode as part of malware-removal troubleshooting. If the file continues to return in Safe Mode, disconnect the affected PC from the network and seek professional incident-response help instead of repeatedly deleting copies.

Match the Windows error to the right repair

Capture the exact wording, the time it appears, the application that displays it, and the path named in the message. “3bf89745_stp.exe error” is not a diagnosis; the context separates a harmless leftover reference from a security incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Windows cannot find 3bf89745_stp.exe” or a similar missing-file message

This commonly means an application, startup entry, or scheduled task still points to a file that was removed, quarantined, or never installed correctly.

  1. Check the security product’s quarantine and protection history. If it removed the file, do not restore it until its signer and hash are verified.
  2. Identify the parent application from the startup entry, scheduled task, or the window that shows the error.
  3. If the application is known and obtained from its official publisher, use its built-in Repair option or uninstall and reinstall it from that publisher.
  4. If the parent application is unwanted or unknown, uninstall it, remove its confirmed startup or scheduled-task entry, and run a full scan.

A security alert says the file was blocked or quarantined

Keep it quarantined while you investigate. Record the detection name, file path, and exact hash from the alert. Do not add an exclusion or turn off Defender merely to suppress the message. If a known application stops working after a detection, reinstall that application from its official source rather than downloading a replacement executable.

The error appears during an installer or update

A damaged or incomplete installer can leave a generated executable behind. Cancel the installer, remove only the partial package after recording its path and hash, restart Windows, and download a fresh installer from the application’s official publisher. Verify that the new file’s signer matches the publisher before running it. Never obtain a replacement .exe from an unverified DLL or EXE download site.

The message appears at every startup

Inspect Task Manager > Startup apps and Task Scheduler Library for an entry that calls the exact path. If the entry belongs to a known application you no longer use, uninstall that application first. If it points to an unknown location or returns after removal, quarantine the file, run a full scan, and use Safe Mode for cleanup if necessary.

The known application crashes after the file is removed

Do not copy a similarly named executable into the application’s folder. Confirm the application’s official name and version, then perform its supported repair or reinstall. A random-looking file with a clean report is not interchangeable with another file unless the hash and publisher match the application’s documented installer.

Can you delete 3bf89745_stp.exe?

Situation Safer action
Security software detected it or it repeatedly recreates itself. Quarantine it, complete a full scan, and investigate startup or scheduled-task persistence before deleting the quarantine item.
It is in Downloads or a temporary folder, has no trusted origin, and scans as suspicious. Record the hash and alert, quarantine it, then remove the isolated item through the security product.
It is inside a known application’s official directory and has a valid matching signature. Do not delete it manually. Use the application’s repair or uninstall process.
The file is unknown, unsigned, and the exact hash has no trustworthy reputation record. Keep it from running, submit the hash to a reputable multi-engine service, and let security software quarantine it if the result is suspicious.
Only a broken startup reference remains after a verified removal. Remove the confirmed startup or scheduled-task entry; deleting unrelated system files will not fix the reference.

Deleting a file without removing the component that launches it can turn a visible error into a hidden persistence problem. Conversely, deleting a legitimate program file can break the parent application. Make the decision from the path, signer, hash, origin, and behavior together.

Verify that the problem is resolved

  1. Restart Windows after quarantine, repair, or reinstall.
  2. Confirm that the original error no longer appears at startup or when the parent application opens.
  3. Run another Defender quick or full scan according to the security product’s recommendation.
  4. Recheck Startup apps and Task Scheduler Library if the file was persistent.
  5. Search for the exact filename in File Explorer only after hidden and protected operating-system items are left unchanged; investigate any newly created copy rather than opening it.
  6. Keep the recorded hash, path, signer, and detection details if you need to contact the application publisher or a security professional.

If the machine shows additional unexplained pop-ups, account activity, disabled security tools, or repeated file creation, stop using it for sensitive work, disconnect it from the network, and obtain qualified malware-removal assistance. The absence of one visible executable does not prove that every unwanted component has been removed.

How to avoid the same uncertainty later

  • Install desktop software only from the publisher’s official site or a trusted store, and note the installer name and location before running it.
  • Keep Microsoft Defender definitions and Windows updates current so newly identified threats can be detected.
  • When an installer creates a generated executable, retain the publisher and product information instead of relying on the filename alone.
  • Review startup entries after uninstalling software so a leftover reference does not continue to call a removed path.
  • Back up important files separately. A backup lets you recover from a damaged installation without downloading an unverified replacement executable.
