0015readerinstaller.exe cannot be declared safe from its filename alone. The closest documented match is ReaderInstaller.exe, a self-extracting Sony Reader for PC installer. Two specific samples listed by herdProtect in 2026 carried Sony Corporation signatures and were detected by 0 of 68 scanners. Those results apply only to the recorded hashes, not to every file with the name 0015readerinstaller.exe. Before opening the file, verify its complete path, digital signer, hash, source, launching program and Microsoft Defender scan result.
What 0015readerinstaller.exe probably is
The name appears to combine a numeric prefix with “readerinstaller.exe.” That naming pattern is not a Windows system convention, and Windows does not maintain a central list that can identify an executable from its filename. A legitimate installer, an incomplete download, a temporary setup component or malware can all use a similar name.

The closest documented family is ReaderInstaller.exe, associated with Sony Reader for PC. herdProtect describes that file as a self-extracting installer published and signed by Sony Corporation. Its records include version 2.3.00.03130 and version 2.4.01.10241. The numeric prefix in 0015readerinstaller.exe is not enough to prove that it belongs to either version or to Sony software at all.

Some installation packages rename, prefix or copy setup files into temporary folders. Conversely, unrelated software can deliberately choose a familiar name. Treat the prefix as an identifier to investigate, not as evidence of legitimacy.

Is 0015readerinstaller.exe a virus?
There is no authoritative population statistic showing how often this exact prefixed filename is legitimate, broken or malicious. The available scan evidence is sample-specific: each of two documented Sony ReaderInstaller.exe hashes was detected by 0 of 68 scanners in herdProtect’s 2026 records. A zero-detection result is not a guarantee for another hash, another download or a file that has been modified.
A digital signature is useful evidence of publisher identity, but it does not prove that you wanted the program or that every action it takes is harmless. Microsoft explains that Authenticode certificates issued by certificate authorities in the Windows Root Certificate Program can establish reputation for SmartScreen. An apparently valid signature can still belong to unwanted software, or a malicious file can be unsigned or signed with a different publisher’s certificate.
Microsoft identifies SoftwareBundler:Win32/InstalleRex as a bundler that installs third-party software. A suspicious installer that offers unrelated programs, changes browser settings or repeatedly downloads components deserves the same caution as any other potentially unwanted application. Do not disable protection or create an exclusion merely to make an installer run.
How to verify the file without running it
Use the following workflow on the exact copy that produced the warning. If you have several copies, record and test each one separately; a clean result for one hash says nothing about another.
- Do not double-click it as a test. Opening an unknown executable can install software, change settings or start a network connection before you have inspected it.
- Record the complete path. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the location and file size. A path inside an expected Sony Reader installation directory is more consistent with the documented samples than a random folder under a browser cache, a user’s temporary directory or an unrelated application.
- Inspect the signer. In Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature and choose Details. Check that Windows reports the signature as valid, identify the signer and inspect the certificate chain. A Sony Corporation signer supports the ReaderInstaller explanation; an unknown signer, an invalid signature or no signature is a warning, not an automatic malware verdict.
- Check the hash. Open PowerShell and run
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpath 015readerinstaller.exe" -Algorithm SHA256, replacing the path with the actual location. Save the resulting SHA-256 value. Only an exact hash match to a trusted record can support a sample comparison; matching the filename or version text is insufficient. - Identify the source. Ask which program downloaded or created the file, whether you intentionally installed or updated Reader for PC, and whether the download came from the software publisher’s expected support or update domain. A familiar filename copied by an unrelated program remains suspicious.
- Scan the file locally. Right-click it in File Explorer and choose the Microsoft Defender scan command. Let the scan finish before opening the file. If Defender has already quarantined it, do not restore it just to test the installer.
- Compare behavior and context. Note any associated setup process, browser download, unexpected network request or offer for unrelated software. Provenance, path, signer, hash, behavior and scan results should be considered together; no single check is decisive.
What the common warnings mean
“Setup Launcher Unicode has stopped working”
FreeFixer records this message for ReaderInstaller.exe. It is a generic application-crash message, not proof of infection. Corruption, an incomplete download, incompatible Windows components, blocked execution or a damaged parent application can all produce it.

“readerinstaller.exe is not a valid Win32 application”
This usually means Windows cannot interpret the file as a valid executable for the current environment. A truncated download, wrong architecture, damaged media, incompatible binary or non-executable data saved with an .exe extension are possible causes. The message alone cannot distinguish a broken installer from a malicious one.
Repeated prompts, pop-ups or downloads
Repeated recreation after deletion suggests that another program, scheduled task, startup entry or browser download is generating the file. Deleting one copy without finding its source may only make the symptom return.
Errors after an uninstall or update
If the message began immediately after removing or updating Reader software, Windows may be trying to complete a setup action with a missing or damaged component. Scan first, then repair or reinstall the parent application from a trusted publisher source.
Manual fixes for 0015readerinstaller.exe errors
Follow these steps in order. Stop and investigate if a security product identifies the file as unwanted or malicious; do not continue by weakening protection.
1. Preserve evidence and create a recovery point
Write down the full path, error text, file size, signer and SHA-256 hash. Before system repairs, back up important documents. In Windows, search for Create a restore point, open the result, select the system drive, choose Configure if protection is disabled, and create a restore point. A restore point does not replace a personal backup, but it provides a rollback option for configuration changes.

2. Re-download a one-time installer failure
If the file was a single failed download and the source is known, delete or quarantine the damaged copy and obtain a fresh installer only from the software publisher’s trusted support or update domain. Do not use a random mirror merely because it has the same filename. Before running the new copy, repeat the path, signature and Defender checks. If the signer changes unexpectedly, stop.
3. Repair or reinstall the parent Reader software
When the error follows an interrupted update or uninstall, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows editions), locate the associated Reader application and use its available Repair, Modify or Uninstall option. Restart Windows, then install a clean copy from the verified publisher source if you still need the program. Remove only the known parent application; do not delete random files from system directories.
4. Run Microsoft Defender scans
For a file that has executed, returned after quarantine or appeared unexpectedly, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Update protection intelligence, run a Full scan, and follow the resulting quarantine or removal instructions. Microsoft also provides Microsoft Safety Scanner for an additional on-demand check; download a current copy from Microsoft and follow its instructions. A scan that finds nothing does not certify an unknown file, so keep the provenance checks.
5. Check startup entries and scheduled tasks
If the executable comes back, open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable only entries you can identify. Then search Windows for Task Scheduler, inspect Task Scheduler Library and look for tasks whose action launches the file or an unfamiliar downloader. Record the task details before disabling it. Do not disable Microsoft security tasks or delete a task solely because its name is unfamiliar; verify its path and publisher first.
6. Inspect installed applications and browser downloads
Review Settings > Apps > Installed apps for software installed around the time the file appeared. Remove an application only when you recognize it as the source or it is identified by security software. Check browser download history and extensions for an unexpected installer or redirect. Keep the browser and Windows updated, and avoid restoring a file that security software quarantined.

7. Repair Windows system components when corruption is broader
If other programs are crashing or Windows reports damaged system files, open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Allow each command to complete. DISM may need Windows Update or installation media as a repair source. Restart after both commands and test the application again. These tools repair Windows components; they do not validate the identity of an arbitrary installer.
8. Check compatibility and permissions
Right-click the verified installer, choose Properties, and inspect the Compatibility tab only if the publisher documents a required older Windows mode. Do not grant administrator rights to an unknown file. If the software is obsolete and cannot run on your Windows edition, look for a supported replacement rather than repeatedly forcing the executable to launch.
9. Use Event Viewer for recurring crashes
Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and filter around the failure time. Look for the faulting application name, faulting module and exception code. These entries can reveal whether the crash is in the installer itself or in a Windows component, but they do not prove that a file is safe. Preserve the event details if you need support from the software publisher.

When deleting 0015readerinstaller.exe is safe
You can normally delete a verified, unused installer after confirming that no installation or update is in progress. Close the parent application, restart Windows if a setup process is still active, and then remove the file through File Explorer. Emptying the Recycle Bin removes that copy, but it does not remove a program that already installed components elsewhere.

If the file is in a temporary directory, deletion may be appropriate after a Defender scan and after checking for a process or scheduled task that recreates it. If security software flags it, quarantine or remove it through that product rather than restoring or manually launching it. If you do not know what created the file, keep the path, hash and alert details for investigation before deletion.
Legitimate and suspicious copies compared
| Check | More consistent with a legitimate Reader installer | Reason for caution |
|---|---|---|
| Provenance | You expected a Reader for PC installation or update from the publisher’s trusted source. | The download was unsolicited, redirected, bundled or obtained from an unrelated mirror. |
| Path | An application directory that matches the expected installation. | A random temporary, cache or unrelated program folder. |
| Signer | A valid Sony Corporation Authenticode signature for the documented ReaderInstaller family. | An invalid, missing or unrelated signature. |
| Hash | An exact match to a trusted, independently documented sample. | No reference match, or a different hash despite the same name. |
| Behavior | Installs the expected Reader software and does not offer unrelated components. | Unexpected network activity, browser changes, bundled programs or repeated recreation. |
| Security scan | No detection on the exact file, interpreted with its other evidence. | A Defender or other security alert, especially when the file’s source is unknown. |
These columns are decision aids, not a scoring system. A valid signature with an unexpected path still deserves investigation, and a clean scan cannot compensate for an unexplained download.
What the 0-of-68 result does—and does not—tell you
herdProtect’s two listed ReaderInstaller.exe samples each show 0 of 68 scanners detecting the specific hash, reported in 2026. That is useful context for those files, but it is not a prevalence rate, a certificate of safety or evidence about the prefixed filename. Malware can be repacked, renamed or newly released after a scan, and detection services can disagree. Use the result alongside the local signer, source, path and behavior checks.

When to seek further help
- Windows Security reports a threat, or the file returns after quarantine.
- Unknown startup items or scheduled tasks continue launching installers.
- Several unrelated applications crash, settings change without permission, or browsers redirect.
- The file is needed for work but has an invalid signature or an unexplained source.
- DISM and System File Checker report repairs that fail repeatedly.
For a workplace computer, preserve the hash and alert name and contact the organization’s administrator before deleting evidence. For a personal computer, use a known-clean device to change important passwords if you suspect that an unknown executable has run, and keep the affected computer offline while scans and investigation proceed.
Can you prevent the error from returning?
- Keep Windows, Microsoft Defender protection intelligence and the parent application current.
- Download installers only from the publisher’s expected domain and verify the signer before opening them.
- Keep backups of personal files so a failed update or cleanup does not force risky recovery choices.
- Do not run unknown executables simply to discover what they do.
- Investigate the creating process, startup entry or scheduled task when a file repeatedly reappears.
The practical verdict is conditional: a Sony-signed ReaderInstaller.exe in an expected location, obtained for an expected installation and clean on a current scan, is more consistent with a legitimate installer. The exact name 0015readerinstaller.exe remains unverified until the individual file passes those checks.
