iOS 26 lets you change the appearance, size, and arrangement of items on your iPhone Home Screen. You can switch app icons and widgets between light, dark, clear, and tinted looks; adjust tint color and saturation; enlarge app icons; choose from the widget sizes an individual app supports; and move apps or widgets between positions and pages.
These controls change presentation and organization. They do not replace an app, rewrite what it does, or guarantee the same widget choices on every iPhone. Availability can vary by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier.

What can you customize on your iPhone Home Screen?
Apple’s iOS 26 Home Screen tools cover three areas: how icons and widgets look, how much space they occupy, and where they are placed. The controls are built into the Home Screen, so no accessory or separate customization utility is required.
Recommended Free Tools
| Area | What you can change | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| App icons | Dark, Clear, Tinted, or automatic light/dark appearance; tint color and saturation; standard or large size | Large icons do not show app names |
| Widgets | Light/dark or tinted appearance and any size the app offers | Each app determines its available widget sizes |
| Placement | Position on a page, movement to another page, and separate layouts for different pages | Items still follow the Home Screen’s placement grid |
| Pages | Show, hide, and organize multiple Home Screen pages | Hiding a page does not uninstall its apps |
The result is a different visual arrangement of the same installed software. A banking app remains the same banking app whether its icon is dark, tinted, enlarged, or placed on another page.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
How do you open the Home Screen customization controls?
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons begin to jiggle.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Customize.
- Choose the appearance or size option you want, then leave editing mode when finished.
If you hold an icon rather than an empty area, you may first see that app’s shortcut menu. Move your finger to a blank part of the wallpaper and hold again to reach the Home Screen editing controls.
Can you change the color of iPhone app icons?
Yes. In the Customize panel, iOS 26 provides Dark, Clear, and Tinted appearances. Tinted mode includes controls for choosing a color and adjusting its saturation. You can also sample a color from the current wallpaper, which helps coordinate icons with a photo or gradient without manually matching a color value.
Dark appearance
Dark changes the icons to a dark presentation intended to fit a darker Home Screen style. It is an appearance treatment, not a change to the app’s interface after you open it.
Clear appearance
Clear uses the transparent-style option offered by the Home Screen controls. The effect is limited to supported Home Screen icon presentation; it does not remove the app or its branding inside the app.
Tinted appearance
Tinted applies one chosen color family across the Home Screen icons. Use the color control to select a hue and the saturation control to make it subtle or more intense. Sampling from the wallpaper is useful when you want the icons to blend with a particular image.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Automatic appearance
The automatic option can show a dark appearance at night and a light appearance during the day. The switch changes presentation over time; it does not create a separate set of apps or pages.
How do you make iPhone app icons bigger?
Enter Home Screen editing mode, choose Edit, select Customize, and choose the large icon size. Apple’s documentation notes a direct trade-off: large app icons hide the app names beneath them. You gain larger symbols but lose the text labels that can help identify similarly shaped icons.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Large icons affect the Home Screen presentation, not the size of controls inside an app. If you need larger text or interface elements after launching an app, those are separate accessibility or in-app settings rather than Home Screen icon controls.
Why can’t every iPhone widget be the same size?
Widget size is controlled by the app that supplies the widget. iOS 26 lets you select among the sizes exposed by that app, but it does not give every widget a universal set of choices.
| Possible widget footprint | What it means |
|---|---|
| Small | A compact widget occupying the smallest supported footprint |
| Medium | A wider layout that can display more information than a small widget |
| Large | A taller or broader layout when the app provides one |
| Extra large | The biggest option for apps that specifically support it |
Those labels describe possible choices, not a promise that every app offers all four. One app may provide only small and medium widgets, while another may offer sizes through extra large. If a size is missing in the widget’s options, the Home Screen cannot manufacture it; the app would need to provide that layout.

How to change a widget’s appearance or size
- Touch and hold the Home Screen background until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Customize.
- Choose the available light, dark, or tinted treatment for widgets.
- Select a size offered by that widget’s app.
The same editing flow can let you turn a widget back into an app icon. The available command depends on the item you are editing, so do not expect every icon to expose widget controls.
Can you move iPhone apps and widgets anywhere?
You can move apps and widgets to different positions on a Home Screen page, including positions toward the top, bottom, or sides, and you can move them to another page. This makes it possible to leave open areas around a wallpaper subject, keep frequently used controls near a preferred edge, or place a widget beside a related group of apps.
- Touch and hold an empty area until the icons jiggle.
- Touch and hold the app or widget you want to move.
- Drag it to the desired open position on the current page.
- To move it to another page, drag it to the page edge and pause until the next page appears.
- Release the item, then tap the Home Screen background to finish.
Placement is still governed by the Home Screen layout system. You can choose among positions that the grid accepts, but this is not freeform pixel-by-pixel design.
Can different Home Screen pages have different layouts?
Yes. Each page can have its own arrangement of apps and widgets. You might keep communication tools on one page, a calendar and task widgets on another, and a minimal page for reading or travel. Moving an item to a new page does not create a second copy of the app; it changes where its icon or widget appears.
Temporarily hiding a page
In Home Screen editing mode, use the page controls to hide a page temporarily. Hidden pages remain part of the phone’s organization, and their apps are still installed. Showing the page again restores access to its arrangement without requiring you to rebuild it.

What does iPhone Home Screen customization not change?
The documented controls are appearance, size, and organization controls. They change how icons and widgets look, how large supported items are, and where those items sit. They do not, through these controls, modify an app’s underlying function or replace its software.
- Changing an icon to Tinted does not change the app’s features, account, or data.
- Choosing a larger icon does not enlarge the app’s internal buttons or text.
- Moving a widget does not change the information the app makes available in that widget.
- Changing a widget’s footprint does not add a size that its app does not support.
- Hiding a page does not uninstall the apps placed on it.
This boundary describes the scope of Apple’s Home Screen instructions; it is not a claim that no other iOS setting can ever affect an app’s appearance or behavior.
How do you reset the Home Screen layout?
If the arrangement has become difficult to manage, open Settings and choose Reset Home Screen Layout. Read the confirmation carefully before proceeding. Apple’s move guide states that folders you created are removed, and downloaded apps are arranged alphabetically after the apps that came with the iPhone.
A reset is therefore an organizational action, not an uninstall. It is useful when you want to start from a clean arrangement, but it discards the folder structure and custom placement you built. Record any layout you need to reproduce before confirming the reset.
Why might a customization option be missing?
The iPhone may not meet the version or model requirement
The instructions above are for iOS 26. Apple says new features and apps can vary by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier. If Edit, Customize, a particular appearance, or a size choice is absent, first verify that the iPhone supports the relevant iOS 26 feature rather than assuming the control is available everywhere.

The app may not provide the widget size you want
When only small and medium choices appear, that is generally the app’s supported set. Reopening the Home Screen editor will not create a large or extra-large layout that the app has not supplied.
The item may be an app icon rather than a widget
Widget-specific size controls appear only for widgets. If you are holding an ordinary app icon, you will see icon and placement options instead of widget footprint choices.
Practical ways to choose a layout
For a clean, minimal page
Use the large icon option if you prefer symbols without labels, then keep only the apps you use most on one page. A compatible widget can provide information at a glance, but its footprint will depend on the app.

Leave open positions around the important part of the wallpaper, use Clear or a lightly saturated Tint, and move icons toward the edges where the layout allows. This changes the composition without changing the wallpaper file or the apps.
For context-based pages
Create separate pages for distinct routines, such as work, travel, or personal tasks. Give each page its own group of apps and widgets, and hide a page temporarily when you want a less distracting Home Screen.
Quick Recap
What to remember before customizing
- Appearance choices are Dark, Clear, Tinted, or automatic light/dark; Tinted includes color and saturation controls.
- Large icons hide app names, so the trade-off is visual size versus text labels.
- Widget sizes are app-specific; no single size menu applies to every widget.
- Apps and widgets can move across accepted positions and between pages.
- Reset Home Screen Layout removes user-created folders and alphabetizes downloaded apps after the apps supplied with the iPhone.
- Feature availability can differ by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier.
