The software floor is title-specific: Resident Evil 4 and Death Stranding Director’s Cut require iOS 17.0 or later, while Assassin’s Creed Mirage requires iOS 17.4 or later. Those are compatibility requirements for these games, not a universal rule for every demanding iPhone title.
The short answer: start with the chip, then check iOS
When a graphically demanding game lists an iPhone requirement, the processor is the first filter. Each of the three App Store listings examined specifies “an A17 Pro chip or later” and names supported iPhone models. An iPhone that does not meet that hardware line is not made eligible merely by installing a newer version of iOS.

The second filter is the operating-system version. The minimum is not identical across the games: two list iOS 17.0 or later, and one lists iOS 17.4 or later. Therefore, there is no single iOS number that can be applied to every demanding game. Check the individual game listing immediately before downloading, because compatibility details and download sizes can change.
What the A17 Pro requirement tells you
A17 Pro or later is the common listed floor
In the three examples, the wording is explicit: the game requires a device with the A17 Pro chip or later. This is more useful than relying on a phone’s age, model number, or the amount of storage it has. Two phones released around the same time can have different chips, so identify the processor requirement before considering capacity or accessories.

“Or later” indicates that a newer chip may qualify, but it does not override the game’s own compatibility list. The store page remains the authority for a particular title. A newer-looking phone should still be checked against that listing rather than assumed to work.
Model eligibility is part of the requirement
The listings identify the iPhone 15 Pro and later supported models. That does not establish that every later iPhone, every storage configuration, or every regional variant is supported by every game. Use the model list shown on the title’s current store page as the final check.
If you are buying a used phone for games, ask for the exact model and verify its chip and listing eligibility. “Pro” in a seller’s description is not enough by itself; the game’s compatibility entry must match the device you intend to use.
Game-by-game requirements
The following comparison uses the US App Store listings checked in 2026. Store entries are dynamic, so treat the figures as a point-in-time reference and recheck the page for your region before installing.

The exact wording in the first and third listings is “Requires iOS 17.0 or later and a device with the A17 Pro chip or later.” The Assassin’s Creed Mirage entry raises the software minimum to iOS 17.4 while keeping the same chip threshold. These statements come from each game’s compatibility details, not from a general iPhone gaming standard.
How much storage should you plan for?
Use the listing number as a warning, not a permanent guarantee
The Assassin’s Creed Mirage listing says “Up to 23.7 GB.” The Death Stranding Director’s Cut listing gives a 77 GB size. Both are product-listing figures checked in 2026, and either can change after updates, packaging changes, or a store-region change. The first is expressed as an upper-bound phrase, while the second is shown as a size figure; neither should be treated as a timeless installation measurement.
The Resident Evil 4 details used here do not provide a storage number suitable for this comparison. Do not fill that gap with a figure copied from another edition or platform.
Check free space before starting the download
On the iPhone, open Settings, choose General, then iPhone Storage to see available capacity and what is consuming it. Compare the free-space figure with the game’s current App Store listing. Keep additional headroom rather than targeting an exact match: the displayed number can change, and iOS may need room to download, unpack, or update an app.

A large game can also affect your later update routine. If the phone is nearly full, an update may fail even when the original installation succeeded. Remove or offload material you can restore, such as already-synced media or apps you no longer use, before beginning a very large installation. Do not delete irreplaceable local files until you have confirmed they are backed up.
Storage capacity is separate from chip eligibility
More storage does not compensate for an unsupported processor, and a qualifying chip does not create free space. Treat the decision as two independent checks: the model and chip must appear eligible, and the phone must have enough available storage for the current listing and its future updates.
How to verify your own iPhone before downloading
- Identify the exact model. Go to Settings > General > About and record the model name and model number. Use the full model identity, not a nickname such as “my Pro iPhone.”
- Open the game’s current App Store page. Search for the title, confirm that it is the intended edition, and open its compatibility or information section. Store wording can differ by region and can be revised after an update.
- Match the hardware line. Look for the statement requiring an A17 Pro chip or later and compare the page’s supported-model list with your device. If your model is absent or the page does not clearly establish support, treat compatibility as unconfirmed.
- Match the minimum iOS version. Compare the game’s number with the iOS version shown under Settings > General > Software Update. The game’s requirement is a floor; it is not a statement of which iOS release is currently latest.
- Update only when the phone supports the requirement. If an update is offered and your device can install it, follow the on-screen instructions. Do not assume that updating iOS can make an older chip meet an A17 Pro requirement.
- Check available storage. Return to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and compare free space with the listing’s current size indication. For the two listings with published figures, plan around the 23.7 GB upper-bound figure or the 77 GB figure, while allowing room for changes.
- Confirm the download conditions. Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection and keep the phone connected to power for a very large download or installation. If the store page reports a changed size or requirement, use the new value rather than an older note.
What the minimum does—and does not—promise
A minimum compatibility line answers a narrow question: whether the publisher lists a device and operating-system combination as supported. It does not report a measured frame rate, graphics preset, sustained temperature, battery-life result, or loading time. No hands-on performance measurements are established for these examples.

That distinction matters when choosing between two eligible phones. If both are listed as supported, the compatibility entry alone cannot tell you which will sustain a steadier frame rate or remain cooler. Those are performance questions requiring separate, model-specific testing. The evidence here supports a purchase or download screen based on eligibility, not a ranking of gaming quality.

The same caution applies to iOS. Meeting iOS 17.0 satisfies the stated software floor for the two titles that list it, but it does not establish that every future update will keep the same requirement. A title can revise its compatibility details, so recheck after a major game update or when moving to a different iPhone.

Touch controls are not disqualified by the listings, and a physical controller is an accessory rather than a hardware requirement in the cited entries. The Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Death Stranding Director’s Cut pages mention compatible PlayStation, Xbox, or MFi controllers.
“Compatible” is a category-level statement, not a guarantee for every controller model, firmware version, connection method, or regional product. If you plan to use one, verify the exact controller on the game page or the controller maker’s current compatibility information. Pairing a controller cannot bypass the A17 Pro or iOS requirement.
Because the listings do not establish controller support for Resident Evil 4 in the details used here, do not assume that the same accessory will work there simply because it is mentioned for the other two games.

Choosing a phone for demanding games: a practical decision framework
If you already own an iPhone
- Check the exact model in Settings > General > About.
- Compare it with the game’s current supported-model list and A17 Pro requirement.
- Check the title’s minimum iOS number, then check your installed version under Software Update.
- Review free space before downloading, especially for a listing showing 23.7 GB or 77 GB.
If you are shopping for a replacement
- Make the chip and supported-model line your first filter.
- Choose enough storage for the game’s current size plus ordinary personal use and future updates.
- Verify the exact model rather than relying on a seller’s broad “newer iPhone” description.
- Recheck the App Store page for each game you care about; eligibility is title-specific.
If a game will not install
- Read the compatibility message and compare it with the listing’s model and chip requirement.
- Confirm that your iOS version meets the title’s stated minimum; iOS 17.4 is required for Assassin’s Creed Mirage in the cited listing, while the other two list iOS 17.0.
- Free storage if the message concerns capacity, then retry after confirming the current listing size.
- If the model is not listed, do not treat a software update or controller as a workaround. The device may simply be outside the publisher’s supported range.
Why requirements can change
App Store compatibility text is maintained by the game publisher and can change as an app is updated, new iPhone models are added, or older combinations are removed. The figures above were checked in 2026 and apply to the US listings linked in this article. A reader in another country may see a different storefront presentation, and a later revision may alter the requirement or displayed size.
For that reason, save the listing as a reference only, not as a permanent specification sheet. Before a major purchase or a large download, open the current page, read the compatibility section, and verify the device and iOS version again.
