For a portable SSD, IP65 means the enclosure is dust-tight and can resist water jets under specified test conditions. It does not mean the drive can be submerged. The two digits describe separate protections: 6 for dust and 5 for water jets. How a particular drive was tested, what happens to its connector and cable, and how its warranty treats liquid or dust damage still matter.
What the two digits in IP65 mean
In an IP rating, the first digit describes protection against solid particles and the second describes protection against water. For IP65, the 6 means dust-tight; the 5 means protection against water jets. Samsung’s IP-rating guide distinguishes level 5 water-jet protection from level 7 protection against temporary immersion.

That distinction is important: an IP65 portable SSD is not rated as submersible. The rating also does not establish protection against every kind of liquid or every real-world exposure. Avoid treating it as assurance that the drive is safe in salt water, chlorinated water, or other untested conditions.
What manufacturers say their tests involve
Published test details are product-specific. The following figures are manufacturer disclosures, not independent comparative test results, and should not be treated as one universal IP65 test recipe.
#1 Best Overall
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
| Drive and source | Manufacturer-published water test | Manufacturer-published dust test or handling note |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung T7 Shield, Samsung FAQ and product page | Samsung says its IPX5 test used fresh water projected through a 6.3 mm nozzle at 12.5 litres per minute for three minutes. | Samsung says its IP6X test exposed the drive to active dust at 2 kg/m³ and pressure under 2 kPa for eight hours in a vacuum chamber. |
| SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V3, SanDisk product page | SanDisk discloses three minutes of water flow at 30 kPa. | SanDisk says limited dust contact does not interfere with operation and instructs users to have the drive clean and dry before use. |
Samsung describes its T7 Shield rating as based on controlled internal testing and says resistance can vary with environmental conditions. The published pages do not show a publication date for these test disclosures. Differences in the two manufacturers’ published details do not establish that one drive is more durable than the other.
What to do if an IP65 SSD gets wet
Water-jet resistance is not permission to connect or use a damp drive. Samsung advises removing moisture, especially around the connector, and fully drying the T7 Shield before use. Samsung also says the cable supplied with that model is not waterproof.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Disconnect the drive if it is connected, and do not connect it while wet.
- Remove visible moisture with a dry towel or tissue, paying particular attention to the connector.
- Let the drive dry fully before reconnecting it. The product guidance does not specify a universal drying time, so do not assume a particular wait is sufficient.
These are Samsung’s instructions for the T7 Shield; follow the care guidance for your own model. A water-resistant drive does not make its cable, connector while wet, or attached device water-resistant.

Does IP65 mean damage is covered by warranty?
No. A resistance rating is not itself a warranty promise. Samsung says liquid and dust damage are excluded from the T7 Shield warranty. SanDisk’s product disclosure also instructs users to use its tested drive clean and dry. Check the warranty terms for the exact product and region rather than assuming an IP rating covers accidental liquid or dust damage.

How to assess an IP65 portable SSD
Use IP65 as one part of a product decision, not as a complete measure of ruggedness. Check the manufacturer’s page for the exact rating and any published test conditions; then look for connector and cable guidance and the warranty’s treatment of liquid and dust damage. Capacity, speed, compatibility, and price are separate considerations and are not established by the IP rating.
Samsung Semiconductor’s interview provides a manufacturer explanation of the T7 Shield’s rating: Jung says it combines IPX5 water protection with IP6X dust protection. The same interview quotes Lee describing silicon rubber on the exterior and a separate seal as part of the product’s waterproofing design. These are manufacturer-interview statements, not independent test findings or wording from a standards body.
