What IP Ratings Mean When Choosing a Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

The IP code tells you how a Bluetooth speaker’s enclosure was tested against solids and water. Choose it by the exposure you expect: splashes, directed jets and immersion are different tests. For a bathroom speaker, a splash-rated model may be enough; for accidental pool drops, look for an immersion rating with a stated depth and time; for beaches and dusty trails, choose a model that also specifies a solids/dust digit.

IP is not a promise that a speaker is indestructible or safe in every liquid. Read the exact rating, the manufacturer’s depth and duration limits, and its care instructions before you buy.

How to read an IP code

IP means Ingress Protection. The code is defined by IEC 60529, the international standard for degrees of protection provided by enclosures. The IEC catalog lists a consolidated edition 2.2 of the standard, published on 29 August 2013, with corrigenda through January 2019 and a stability date of 2027.

An IP code has two characteristic positions after the letters “IP”:

  • First characteristic: protection against solids, including dust.
  • Second characteristic: protection against water.

When a position contains X, that characteristic was not specified in the code. IPX7, for example, states a water-protection test but does not state a solids or dust level. X does not mean zero protection; it means the code does not provide a rating for that position.

Code example What is specified What remains unanswered
IPX4 Water protection against splashes from any direction, as described in JBL’s consumer guide No solids/dust characteristic is stated
IPX7 Water protection for temporary immersion under the product’s stated test conditions No solids/dust characteristic is stated; depth and duration still need checking
IP67 A solids/dust characteristic and a water-immersion characteristic are both specified The product’s instructions still define use, care and limits outside the laboratory test
IPX8 Water protection for immersion under conditions set by the manufacturer No solids/dust characteristic is stated; there is no single generic IPX8 depth or duration

Do not treat the second digit as a simple “waterproof score.” Each digit corresponds to a particular test condition. A speaker can pass an immersion test yet have no stated protection against dust, or be splash-rated without being suitable for submersion.

Splashes, jets and immersion are different exposures

Splashes

Splashes are droplets or light spray reaching the enclosure from different directions. JBL’s bathroom-speaker guide describes IPX4 as protection from splashes from any direction. That makes this kind of rating relevant to a sink, a countertop near a shower or occasional raindrops, provided the speaker’s own instructions allow that use.

The same guide recommends a water-resistance level 7 for a bathroom speaker. That is JBL’s consumer guidance, not an IEC rule or a universal minimum. A bathroom’s actual risk depends on whether the speaker can be knocked into a tub, exposed to a strong shower stream or left in a humid area for long periods.

Directed water jets

A hose, shower nozzle or pressure spray is a directed jet, not merely a splash. Jet tests apply water in a different way, so an immersion rating should not be used as proof that a speaker can withstand a high-pressure stream. If jets are part of your use case, look for a product whose documentation explicitly covers that exposure and follow any distance, angle or time limits.

Temporary immersion

IPX7 is intended for a specified temporary-immersion test. JBL says the IPX7 examples on its support page are rated for immersion to 1 metre (3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes. That is a manufacturer specification for the listed products, not a promise that every IPX7 speaker has identical construction or that it can play underwater indefinitely.

Manufacturer-defined immersion

IPX8 also concerns immersion, but its conditions are set by the manufacturer. One model may state a particular depth and duration while another sets different conditions. Never fill in a missing IPX8 limit from a generic chart; use the depth, time and operating restrictions printed in that model’s manual or product page.

Match the rating to how you will use the speaker

Use case Exposure to consider What to verify before buying
Bathroom shelf or sink Splashes, condensation and an occasional knock into water A splash rating such as IPX4 may address light spray; if a drop into a bath is plausible, choose an immersion-rated model. JBL’s IPX7 bathroom recommendation is guidance from JBL, not a universal threshold.
Shower area Repeated spray and possibly a concentrated jet Check whether the manufacturer permits shower use and whether its test covers jets. Do not infer jet protection from IPX4 or IPX7 alone.
Poolside Fresh-water splashes or accidental temporary submersion For a possible dunk, look for IPX7 or IPX8 and read the stated depth and time. Keep the port cover closed and follow drying instructions.
Beach, campsite or dusty trail Water plus sand or dust Choose a code with a specified first characteristic as well as water protection. IP67 is an example that states both characteristics; IPX7 leaves the solids/dust position unspecified.
Hose or heavy spray Directed water jets Find an explicit jet-resistance claim and its test limits. An immersion number alone does not establish suitability for pressurized water.
Long or deep submersion More severe immersion than a short accidental drop Use only a model whose manufacturer specifies the required depth and duration, normally under an IPX8 claim. Do not assume the 1-metre/30-minute IPX7 example applies.

A practical buying process

  1. Describe the worst realistic exposure. Decide whether the speaker will encounter droplets, a shower stream, a fall into a pool, salt water, sand or prolonged immersion. Include accidents, not just normal placement.
  2. Read both IP positions. Check whether the first position is a number or X. If you expect dust or sand, an unspecified first position leaves an important question unanswered.
  3. Check the water test and its limits. For IPX7 or IPX8, find the manufacturer’s stated depth and duration. For jets, confirm that the documentation addresses jets rather than relying on an immersion claim.
  4. Read the manual’s operating restrictions. Look for instructions about port covers, removable seals, temperature, cleaning, storage and whether the speaker may operate while wet.
  5. Plan for the actual liquid. A rating discussed for tap water does not automatically cover chlorinated pool water, salt water, soap or other chemicals. If you will use the speaker in those environments, read the manufacturer’s care guidance.
  6. Check the enclosure’s condition. Waterproofing depends on an intact enclosure. Examine charging-port covers and seals, and treat cracks, loose covers or impact damage as reasons to stop relying on the original rating.
  7. Then compare non-IP requirements. Choose the battery life, size, controls, carrying handle, Bluetooth behavior and sound performance that fit your use. A higher IP number cannot compensate for a speaker that is too large to carry or runs out of power before your outing ends.

Reading a real specification: the JBL Charge 5 example

JBL’s Charge 5 specification sheet identifies the portable Bluetooth speaker as IP67 waterproof and dustproof and lists wireless Bluetooth streaming. The JBL product page provides the corresponding product listing.

  • Ultra-portable JBL Pro Sound with punchier bass: Don't let its little size fool you. The JBL Go 4 packs a serious musical punch. Your friends won't believe how much great JBL Pro Sound comes out of such a small speaker.
  • Up to 7 hours of playtime plus 2 hours with Playtime Boost: Don't sweat the small stuff like charging your battery. JBL Go 4 gives you up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge. Tap Playtime Boost to add up to 2 more hours to your battery life.
  • Waterproof and dustproof: The JBL Go 4's IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating ensures this portable speaker can handle almost any environment, from a poolside party to a seaside picnic.
  • Multi-speaker connection by Auracast: Want even bigger JBL Pro Sound? Pair two Go4s for stereo sound, or wirelessly connect multiple JBL Auracast-enabled speakers using Auracast for even bigger sound.
  • Made in part with recycled materials: The JBL Go 4 incorporates post-consumer recycled plastic and fabric for the speaker grille. It's also packaged in FSC-certified paper printed with soy ink.

IP67 is useful as an example of how to read the code: the first characteristic is stated rather than replaced by X, and the second characteristic is an immersion rating. It does not mean the speaker is immune to damage, that it should be left underwater, or that it has been independently tested by a reviewer. It is a manufacturer-stated specification, so use the accompanying instructions for real-world operation.

Salt water, chlorine and other liquids

“My device is waterproof, but what about salt water or chlorine water?” is a separate care question from the IP test itself. JBL says the standard waterproofing condition it discusses is tap water. Its support guidance advises rinsing the speaker with fresh water after pool or ocean use and drying covers and areas where water can collect.

JBL warns that pool chemicals and salt can damage waterproof seals or harm the surface finish over time if they are not rinsed away. This is manufacturer guidance for its products, not a rule that every brand uses identical materials or instructions. If another speaker’s manual says something different, follow that manual.

  • After pool or ocean use, rinse as directed with fresh water rather than allowing salt or chemicals to dry on the enclosure.
  • Dry the charging-port cover, seams and recesses where water can remain trapped.
  • Do not assume that a speaker can be charged while wet. The supplied sources do not establish a universal charging rule; use the exact model’s manual.
  • Keep covers fully closed during exposure and inspect them for grit or damage before relying on the rating again.

What an IP rating does not guarantee

It is not an indestructibility rating

IEC 60529 describes enclosure protection under defined tests. It does not promise resistance to drops, crushed housings, worn seals, extreme temperatures, corrosion or every possible liquid. A speaker that passes a test when new may no longer meet the same protection after physical damage or age.

It does not cover every liquid or pressure condition

Tap-water immersion, salt water, chlorinated water, soapy water and a concentrated jet can stress an enclosure differently. Unless the manufacturer specifically addresses those conditions, treat the IP code as a limited test result rather than a blanket permission.

It does not fill in missing information

IPX7 leaves the solids/dust characteristic unspecified. IPX8 leaves the exact immersion conditions to the manufacturer. A product page that says only “waterproof” without an IP code, test description or manual gives you less information for a careful purchase.

It does not override maintenance

Port covers, gaskets and seams must remain correctly fitted. Sand can prevent a cover from closing; a drop can create a crack; dried salt can attack a seal. Follow cleaning and storage instructions even when the speaker carries a high rating.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by the largest number only: A water digit does not tell you about dust, jets or the product’s specific immersion limits. Read both positions and the manual.
  • Assuming IPX7 means unlimited underwater use: The cited JBL examples specify 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. Treat that as a bounded test, not continuous underwater operation.
  • Using an immersion claim to justify a hose: Directed jets are a different exposure. Look for a jet-specific statement.
  • Ignoring X: IPX7 may be excellent for a dunk while leaving dust protection unstated. That matters on beaches, trails and work sites.
  • Skipping post-use rinsing: Salt and pool chemicals can harm seals and finishes over time. Use fresh-water rinsing and drying instructions where the manufacturer recommends them.
  • Charging immediately after a splash: Water in or around a charging port can create a hazard. Check the model’s manual for its required drying procedure.

Quick checklist before you buy

  • What is the worst exposure: splash, jet, temporary dunk or prolonged/deep immersion?
  • Does the code specify a solids/dust characteristic, or is the first position X?
  • For IPX7, what depth and duration does this product state?
  • For IPX8, what manufacturer-defined depth, duration and operating limits apply?
  • Does the documentation address shower jets, pool chemicals, salt water or only tap-water testing?
  • How should you rinse, dry, store and charge the speaker after exposure?
  • Are the port cover and seals intact, and do the battery, size and controls fit your use?

The bottom line

Use the IP code as a map of tested enclosure conditions, not as a universal waterproof promise. Pick the water characteristic that matches the exposure, choose a specified solids/dust characteristic when sand or dust is part of the environment, and keep the product’s depth, duration and care instructions with the rating. For pool or beach use, fresh-water rinsing and thorough drying are part of protecting the speaker after the test is over.
