What investors should know about foreign-exchange risk when buying African shares

Yes—currency movements can change, or even reverse, the result of buying an African share. Your home-currency outcome reflects the share’s performance in its local market, the exchange rate between that market’s currency and your base currency, and the costs and practical delays involved in converting and moving money. A gain in the local share price can therefore become a loss after translation into your own currency.

Investor.gov puts the core issue plainly: “When the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the currency of an international investment changes, it can increase or reduce your investment return.” That wording is specific to U.S.-dollar investors; the same mechanism applies to any base currency. The relevant exchange rate is always the one between your currency and the currency in which your economic exposure is actually held. Investor.gov’s international-investing guide explains the general risks, while fund disclosures show why African exposure requires country-by-country checking.

How foreign-exchange risk changes your return

Suppose you buy a share quoted in a local African currency but measure your wealth in euros, pounds, dollars or another currency. The local share return is only one part of the result. A useful approximation is:

Here, “currency return” means the change in the local currency’s value against your base currency over the period you own the investment. The formula is an explanation tool, not a forecast, and it excludes dealing costs, taxes and transfer friction.

A simple hypothetical example

Imagine a share rises 10% in its local market while the local currency falls 15% against your base currency. The translated result is approximately (1.10 × 0.85) − 1, or a 6.5% decline before costs. Conversely, a flat local share price with a 10% currency appreciation would produce roughly a 10% gain in your base currency before costs. The direction and size of the two movements matter together.

Which currency is the relevant one?

Start with the currency of the exposure, not the currency displayed on an app. A direct local listing normally creates exposure to the listing market’s currency. A fund can own securities in several currencies while being priced or reported in another. A depositary receipt may trade in a major currency even though the underlying company and settlement chain remain linked to a local market. Read the instrument documents and identify the currency of the assets, dividends and sale proceeds.

Africa represents several currency regimes, not one trade

A portfolio described as “African shares” may span countries with unrelated currencies, monetary policies, liquidity conditions and rules for moving capital. A fund disclosure filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission notes that currencies in African markets can be managed or pegged and that a change in regime can produce an abrupt adjustment. The filing presents these as potential risks, not as events that must occur. See the SEC-filed VanEck Africa fund disclosure.

Why a regional label is insufficient

  • Two holdings in the same regional portfolio can have completely different currency exposures.
  • A managed or pegged exchange rate can behave differently from a freely floating rate, and the policy framework can change.
  • Trading, dividend and capital-transfer procedures are set by each market and intermediary, so a delay in one country does not establish a problem everywhere.

Ask for the portfolio’s current country and currency breakdown rather than treating “Africa” as a single FX position. The cited fund filing describes risks for that fund; it does not establish that every African market has identical controls or volatility.

Where currency risk enters the investment route

Route What you may own Currency questions Access and custody checks
Direct local listing Shares traded in the company’s home market What currency funds the purchase, in which currency dividends are declared and paid, and how sale proceeds are converted Whether your broker can route the order, where the shares are held, dealing hours, settlement process and repatriation procedure
Exchange-traded or open-ended fund A portfolio of companies, potentially across several African countries Underlying currencies, any permitted hedging, fund dealing currency and the currency in which distributions are paid Prospectus rules, creation/redemption or dealing terms, custody chain, liquidity and charges
Depositary receipt A receipt representing an interest in an underlying foreign share Receipt trading currency versus the underlying share currency, conversion arrangements, dividend conversion and any currency-related charges Depositary terms, cancellation or conversion process, market hours, liquidity and the broker’s custody arrangements

These are different legal and operational routes, not interchangeable wrappers. Compare the actual documents for the security you are considering. Investor.gov discusses foreign-market access and international-investing risks, and fund disclosures describe how currency, conversion and transfer restrictions can affect investors. Investor.gov guidance and the SEC-filed disclosure are useful starting points.

Do not infer hedging from a fund’s trading currency

A fund can be listed, priced or reported in U.S. dollars, euros or another major currency while its assets remain exposed to local African currencies. The display currency tells you how a price is quoted; it does not, by itself, prove that the manager removes currency exposure. Check the prospectus for an explicit hedge policy, the instruments permitted for hedging, the currencies covered, the target hedge ratio and the circumstances in which the manager may leave exposure unhedged.

The 2024 summary prospectus for a VanEck Africa fund illustrates why the definition and policy language matter. It describes African companies as companies listed in Africa or incorporated elsewhere with at least 50% of revenues or related assets in Africa. That 50% threshold defines the fund’s eligibility test; it is not a statistic about FX risk or an expected return. Read the fund’s SEC-filed summary prospectus.

Questions to locate in a prospectus

  • Does the fund state that it hedges currency exposure, and is the hedge permanent, tactical or optional?
  • Which currency pairs can be hedged, and what happens to currencies for which no hedge is used?
  • Are distributions converted before payment, and which party bears conversion costs?
  • Can the fund change its hedge approach, and where are those changes disclosed?

Conversion costs reduce the amount you actually receive

Even when the exchange rate moves in your favor, the rate available to you may be worse than a published reference rate. A dealer or broker can apply a bid-ask spread, and a platform or bank may add a separate conversion charge. The relevant comparison is the all-in rate for your specific amount, currency pair, settlement route and transaction time.

Friction point What to verify before trading Why it matters
FX spread The buy and sell rates offered for the exact currency pair and order size A wide spread creates an immediate cost and can be material when entering and exiting
Broker transaction charge Commission, exchange fees and any minimum charge for the local market The cost may apply in addition to the quoted FX rate
Custody or account charge Safekeeping, foreign-market account and corporate-action fees Recurring charges can affect a long holding even if the share price is unchanged
Transfer charge Fees for sending money to the market or bringing proceeds back Small transfers can be disproportionately affected by fixed charges
Dividend conversion Currency used for the dividend, conversion date and rate-setting method The cash you receive can differ from a headline dividend amount

Fund disclosures identify conversion costs and restrictions as factors that can reduce returns or liquidity. Investor.gov likewise warns investors to understand the costs and mechanics of international investing. SEC disclosure · Investor.gov.

Repatriation and currency controls can affect liquidity

“Repatriation” is the process of converting and transferring dividends or sale proceeds from the investment market back to your financial system. Rules can restrict or delay conversion or transfers, and the practical process can depend on the bank, broker, settlement agent and required documentation. A position can therefore be economically profitable but difficult to turn into home currency on the date you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the route before placing an order

  1. Ask who converts the money. Determine whether conversion is handled by your broker, a local custodian, a fund, a depositary or your bank.
  2. Ask when conversion occurs. For a dividend or sale, identify the event that sets the exchange rate and the expected timing of cash availability.
  3. Ask what can delay a transfer. Request the current documentation, approval and banking requirements for the specific market.
  4. Ask whether funds can be held temporarily. Find out where unconverted proceeds sit and in which currency.
  5. Confirm the exit path. A broker should explain how you would close the position, receive proceeds and move them to your base-currency account.

Do not generalize from one country to the entire continent. The SEC-filed fund disclosure identifies restrictions as potential risks, while Investor.gov advises investors to understand the rules and risks of the specific foreign investment.

Broker access and investor protection depend on your jurisdiction

Investor.gov says a U.S. broker may be able to process orders in foreign-market shares. It also warns that a U.S. investor using an unregistered foreign broker may not receive the same protections available through a broker registered in the United States. This is U.S.-specific guidance, not a statement about every country’s rules. Investors elsewhere should identify their own securities regulator, compensation scheme, custody rules and complaint process.

Questions for a broker or platform

  • Which legal entity will execute and custody the trade?
  • Is that entity authorised in your jurisdiction, and for which services?
  • Will you hold the local shares directly, through a sub-custodian or through a depositary structure?
  • What happens if the local market, custodian or currency-transfer system is temporarily unavailable?
  • Can the broker provide written all-in FX pricing rather than only a reference rate?

Access is not the same as protection. A platform that accepts your order may still leave you responsible for understanding foreign custody, transfer and currency rules.

A practical due-diligence workflow

Use this sequence for a direct share, fund or depositary receipt. Save the answers with your trade records; policies and market conditions can change.

  1. Define your base currency. State the currency in which you will measure both gains and losses.
  2. Map the economic exposure. List each country, local currency and approximate weight. For a company, note where it is listed and where its operations and cash flows are located.
  3. Identify the legal route. Record whether the instrument is a local share, fund interest or depositary receipt, and obtain the current prospectus or terms.
  4. Read the hedge language. Look for an explicit policy, permitted tools, coverage limits and reporting of hedge results. Do not treat the quote currency as proof of hedging.
  5. Price the complete transaction. Obtain the conversion spread, commissions, custody charges, transfer fees and dividend-conversion terms for your expected order size.
  6. Trace cash in and cash out. Document how purchase money reaches the market and how sale proceeds and dividends return to your base-currency account.
  7. Check current restrictions. Confirm conversion, transfer, settlement and repatriation rules with the broker and relevant local institutions before trading.
  8. Test your scenarios. Calculate outcomes for a local share gain with currency depreciation, a local loss with currency appreciation, and a flat share price with currency movement. Include all stated costs.
  9. Verify protections. Confirm the broker’s registration, custody arrangement and complaint route in your jurisdiction.
  10. Set a review trigger. Recheck the policy after a prospectus change, material currency-regime announcement, broker change or alteration to transfer rules.

Scenario analysis that separates share risk from FX risk

Local share movement Local-currency movement versus your base currency Likely translated effect before costs What to investigate
Up Appreciates Both effects support the home-currency result Whether the gain is reduced by spreads, fees or delayed conversion
Up Depreciates Currency can offset part or all of the share gain The break-even currency move and whether proceeds can be repatriated promptly
Down Appreciates Currency can cushion the local-market loss Whether the cushion is temporary and how dividends are converted
Down Depreciates Both effects reduce the home-currency result Liquidity, exit costs and the ability to transfer remaining proceeds
Flat Moves either way Your result can still be positive or negative The currency exposure created by the route and any available hedge

Use your own expected holding period and base currency in the calculations. A scenario is a decision aid, not a prediction of a particular African currency.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“The share went up, so I made money.”

Correction: Translate both the entry and exit values into your base currency and include conversion and transaction costs.

“The fund trades in my currency, so it is hedged.”

Correction: Read the hedge policy and portfolio currency exposure. Trading currency and hedging are separate facts.

“All African markets have the same FX rules.”

Correction: Identify the exact country, currency regime, broker, custodian and transfer process. A regional label cannot answer a market-specific question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A cheaper headline exchange rate is the cheapest route.”

Correction: Compare the all-in spread, commissions, custody and transfer charges, not only a displayed mid-market rate.

“Selling is always as easy as buying.”

Correction: Confirm dealing liquidity, settlement, conversion and repatriation steps before entering the position.

“A foreign broker offers the same protection as my domestic broker.”

Correction: Verify registration, custody and investor-protection arrangements in your jurisdiction. U.S. investors should review Investor.gov’s warning about unregistered foreign brokers.

How to compare competing investments

When two routes provide exposure to similar companies, score each one against the same questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Country and currency mix: Which local currencies drive the assets, dividends and proceeds?
  • Structure: Is it a direct share, pooled fund or depositary receipt?
  • Hedge policy: Is hedging explicit, partial, optional or absent?
  • Execution and custody: Which entities execute, settle and safeguard the position?
  • All-in pricing: What FX spread and other charges apply at purchase, during ownership and at exit?
  • Liquidity and dealing terms: When can you trade, and how are orders, redemptions or conversions handled?
  • Cash movement: How are dividends and sale proceeds converted and repatriated?
  • Rules and protections: Which regulator and legal regime govern the route?

The Allan Gray Africa Equity Fund prospectus is one example of a fund document investors can inspect for structure and terms. Its contents should not be treated as universal rules for every African fund or market.

What to monitor after investing

Currency risk is not settled on the purchase date. Keep a record of the local price, the exchange rate used for each cash flow, the fees deducted and the amount ultimately received in your base currency. Review fund reports or company notices for changes to country weights, hedge policy, listing arrangements and dividend procedures.

Also monitor notices from your broker and the relevant regulator for changes affecting conversion, settlement or transfers. If a currency regime is managed or pegged, a policy change can alter the exposure quickly; the possibility is a risk to monitor, not a forecast that a change will occur.

Limits of this guidance

This is general investor education, not individualized financial advice or a current country-by-country survey of foreign-exchange controls. The cited fund filings describe the risks and terms of particular funds and do not prove that every African market has the same conditions. Before investing, confirm current local rules, settlement and repatriation procedures, broker eligibility, custody arrangements and actual FX pricing for the specific instrument and your own base currency.
