There is no standard percentage of “AI” in a retirement fund. Your 401(k), IRA, or target-date option may own AI-related businesses indirectly through mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or collective investment trusts (CITs). The only dependable way to estimate exposure is to identify the exact option, inspect its current holdings and underlying funds, and apply a clear definition of what counts as AI-related.
A fund’s name, target year, or a headline about the technology sector does not reveal that exposure. Holdings, weights, fees, asset allocation, and glide paths change by product and date. The following process shows how to investigate without treating a thematic fund’s portfolio as representative of retirement funds generally.

What “AI exposure” means in a retirement account
Exposure can be direct when a fund owns a company whose main business is artificial-intelligence software, hardware, or services. It can also be indirect: a retirement option may invest in another fund, and that underlying fund may own AI-related companies. A target-date fund can therefore have AI exposure even when its own name never mentions AI.

The term is broader than consumer-facing AI applications. A 2026 SEC-filed thematic prospectus describes an AI ecosystem that can include the following areas. That framework belongs to one adviser; it is not a definition used consistently across retirement products.

| Area | How it can relate to AI |
|---|---|
| Semiconductors and memory | Processors and memory components used to train or run AI systems. |
| Cloud computing | Remote computing capacity used to develop, train, and deploy models. |
| Networking hardware | High-speed connections that move data between computing systems. |
| Data-center infrastructure | Facilities and equipment that house large-scale computing workloads. |
| Power and cooling | Electricity, thermal-management systems, and related infrastructure needed by data centers. |
| Enterprise software and deployment platforms | Tools that integrate models into business applications and production systems. |
| Cybersecurity | Security products used to protect AI systems, data, and the infrastructure running them. |
These categories illustrate why two investors can use different but defensible definitions. One analysis might count only companies whose primary business is AI; another might include a chip manufacturer, cloud provider, or data-center operator that earns substantial revenue from AI demand. A company can also use AI internally without being an AI-focused business. Any percentage or “AI score” is meaningful only when its classification rule, holdings date, and treatment of indirect holdings are disclosed.
The SEC-filed examples are illustrations of possible businesses and risks, not evidence that a typical 401(k) or target-date fund owns those securities. They also do not establish a market-wide exposure estimate.
Why a fund name or target year is not enough
Retirement products often invest through several layers. A target-date fund may hold stock and bond funds, which in turn hold individual companies. The top-level portfolio can change as the manager rebalances, and each underlying fund can change its holdings independently. A label such as “2035” identifies an intended retirement date, not a fixed list of companies or a guaranteed allocation.

The SEC’s Target Date Funds – Investor Bulletin, dated March 25, 2025, warns that funds with the same target date can have different investments, risks, glide paths, fees, and performance. It also states: “Target date funds do not guarantee that you will have sufficient retirement income, or a specific level of retirement income, at or after the target date.” That statement applies to the registered mutual funds and ETFs covered by the bulletin, not every retirement arrangement.
Some employer-plan target-date options are collective investment trusts. CITs are outside the scope of the SEC bulletin cited above, so the plan sponsor or employer is the appropriate source for current information about a particular CIT. The same practical lesson applies: obtain the plan’s own holdings and fee documents rather than inferring exposure from a marketing name.
How much AI is in my 401(k)? A step-by-step investigation
1. Identify the exact investment vehicle
Write down the complete option name, share class or ticker if one exists, and the plan’s description. Determine whether it is a mutual fund, ETF, CIT, or another vehicle. Different share classes and vehicles can have different costs and portfolios, even when their names look similar.

2. Get current primary documents
For a mutual fund or ETF, start with the current prospectus and the latest shareholder report. SEC-registered funds generally make filings available through EDGAR; search by the fund’s legal name or filing identifier. The prospectus explains strategy, principal risks, and fees. The shareholder report supplies a dated portfolio snapshot and performance information.

For an employer plan, request the current investment information from the plan sponsor or employer. Ask specifically for the holdings, asset allocation, underlying-fund list, expense information, and the date each document was prepared. A plan website that shows only a short description is not a substitute for these materials.
3. Trace underlying funds
Read the portfolio schedule for entries that are themselves funds. Open the prospectus and holdings report for each material underlying fund when those documents are available. This look-through step is essential: a broad-market fund can contain companies involved in AI even if the top-level retirement option does not advertise that theme.
4. Set your classification rule before counting
Decide whether your analysis includes only AI-focused companies or also semiconductors, cloud services, networking, data centers, power, cooling, enterprise software, deployment platforms, and cybersecurity. Record the rule in your notes. Without it, two exposure estimates can disagree simply because they count different parts of the ecosystem.
5. Use holdings dates and weights, not headlines
Record the “as of” date beside every holding and weight. A fund’s portfolio is a moving snapshot, not a permanent fact. When exposure is indirect, note both the retirement option’s allocation to the underlying fund and the underlying fund’s position in the company. Overlapping funds can give the same company more weight than a quick list of names suggests.

Look at sector and issuer concentrations as well as the stock/bond mix. A broad diversified option may have small positions across many companies; a concentrated thematic option may be more affected by developments at a relatively small number of issuers. AI exposure should therefore be considered alongside your other accounts, not in isolation.

7. Verify fees at every layer
Compare the retirement option’s expense ratio and any plan-level charges with the expenses of its underlying funds. A low headline fee does not by itself describe the total cost of a multi-layer structure. Use the current fee disclosures and note whether a figure is recurring or a one-time plan charge.
Does my target-date fund invest in AI?
It might, but the answer depends on the fund’s actual holdings and the definition you use. Target-date funds commonly hold diversified stock funds, and those funds may include companies participating in AI development or deployment. Other target-date funds may use different asset classes, managers, or allocation policies and therefore have different indirect exposure.
Compare funds with the same target year using the following axes rather than assuming the year makes them interchangeable:
| Comparison axis | What to examine | Why it affects the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Direct and look-through holdings | Company names, underlying funds, and each dated weight. | Reveals whether exposure comes from a small direct position or several underlying portfolios. |
| Diversification and concentration | Sector mix and largest issuer positions. | Shows how strongly a technology or infrastructure shock could influence results. |
| Stock/bond allocation | Current allocation and how it changes with age. | Determines how much of the retirement option is exposed to equity-market movements at a given time. |
| Glide path | Whether the strategy is “to” or “through” the target date, and the allocation at and after that date. | Two funds with the same year can take different amounts of investment risk before and after retirement. |
| Total costs | Fund expenses, underlying-fund expenses, and plan-level charges. | Fees reduce returns regardless of whether technology holdings perform well. |
| Fit with your other assets and income | Other workplace, brokerage, and guaranteed-income sources. | The fund’s role depends on the rest of your retirement portfolio, not its label alone. |
“To” glide paths generally reach their most conservative allocation around the target date, while “through” designs continue changing after it; the exact policy is fund-specific and must be read in the prospectus. Neither design guarantees a sufficient or specified retirement income.

Competition and rapid technological change
Companies may face intense competition, short product cycles, and fast changes in computing methods. A product that is attractive today can lose demand if a rival offers a more capable or less expensive alternative.

Uncertain adoption and obsolescence
Businesses and consumers may adopt AI more slowly than expected, or a technology may become obsolete. Revenue forecasts can depend on customers converting experiments into long-term production use.
Regulation, privacy, and data protection
Rules governing AI, data use, privacy, and safety are evolving. Changes can raise compliance costs, restrict a product’s use, or delay deployment in particular markets.
Cybersecurity
AI systems and the data used to train or operate them can become targets for attacks. Security failures can create legal, operational, and reputational costs for companies in software, cloud, and infrastructure.
Computing capacity and specialized hardware
AI businesses can depend on access to advanced processors, memory, networking, data centers, electricity, and cooling. Shortages, supply-chain disruptions, or rising infrastructure costs can limit growth or compress margins.
Concentration risk
A thematic fund may hold a relatively small number of companies tied closely to the same technology trend. That concentration can make its results more sensitive to one issuer, one supply chain, or one regulatory development than a broadly diversified retirement option.

How to compare two retirement options without chasing an AI label
Start with the complete portfolio role. If one option holds more stocks and another holds more bonds, differences in overall risk may matter more than the presence of a few technology companies. Next, compare the glide paths and the allocation at and after the target date. A fund that continues taking equity risk after the target date can behave differently from one that becomes more conservative sooner.
Then examine the underlying holdings and issuer weights using the same classification rule for both options. Keep the dates aligned as closely as possible; comparing one fund’s current report with another fund’s older report can create a false difference. Include underlying-fund expenses in the cost comparison, and consider whether your other accounts already have substantial technology or infrastructure exposure.
Treat any advertised AI percentage as incomplete unless the provider states:
- the holdings date;
- the universe of companies counted;
- the rule distinguishing AI-focused businesses from companies that merely use AI;
- how indirect holdings through other funds are handled; and
- whether weights are based on the retirement option, its underlying funds, or both.
No reliable aggregate percentage for AI exposure across retirement funds is established by the materials discussed here. A single number without those methodological details can create more confidence than the data justify.
Practical decisions for retirement savers
If your investigation finds AI-related holdings, that does not automatically mean you should change the investment. The relevant question is how the exposure fits the option’s diversification, glide path, fees, and your complete retirement plan. An indirect holding in a broad fund is a different risk from a concentrated allocation to an AI-themed fund.
Keep a dated copy of the prospectus, shareholder report, or plan disclosure you used. Recheck after a material fund change or at a regular review interval because holdings, weights, fees, and risk disclosures can change. When the plan uses a CIT or withholds detailed holdings, ask the sponsor for the most current explanation rather than substituting data from a similarly named mutual fund.
AI is a theme that can run through hardware, software, infrastructure, and services. Understanding that chain helps answer “How much AI is in my 401(k)?” more accurately than a fund name does, while preserving the broader retirement questions—diversification, costs, risk capacity, and income needs—that determine whether an option is suitable.
