If SEBI takes action against an investment scheme you invested in, first find and read the regulator’s exact order or public notice. Then follow any investor-specific claim process and deadline stated there, preserve proof of your investment, and use SCORES only if your issue qualifies as a securities-market grievance. SEBI action alone does not guarantee a refund or set how much you will recover.
1. Find the exact SEBI order or notice
Search SEBI’s official public notices for the scheme and operator’s exact names. Open the original document rather than relying on a forwarded screenshot, social post, or search-result excerpt.

Read the operative directions and note the document date, the legal entities and individuals named, what SEBI has directed, whether the order is interim or final, and whether investors are asked to take a particular step. The directions in the specific case—not a general description of another SEBI action—determine what process applies to you.
2. Check whether there is a refund or claim process
Look in the order or notice for instructions to register, submit a proof of claim, complete a form, or contact a named authority, court, administrator, or other entity. Follow the stated method and deadline exactly, and keep evidence that you submitted the required material.

There is no universal refund amount, right, or timetable triggered simply because SEBI has acted. Do not assume that a general SCORES complaint replaces a separate case-specific claim process, or that a payout will happen automatically. If the document is unclear, use the contact or process identified in that notice rather than applying a deadline from a different case.
3. Preserve evidence of your investment
Create a dated file containing documents that show your relationship with the scheme and the payments or representations involved. Keep originals where possible and prepare an indexed copy for any submission.

- Receipts, bank statements, transaction references, and other proof of payment.

- The SEBI order or notice, plus any complaint, acknowledgment, or response you have received.
4. Use SCORES for an eligible securities-market grievance
SCORES is SEBI’s online grievance-redressal facilitation platform. It can help investors submit and track certain complaints, but it is not a general adjudicator for every dispute over money. The SCORES 2.0 portal and its current FAQ set out eligibility, documentation, and procedure.

For a grievance involving a listed company or a SEBI-registered intermediary, first raise it with that company or intermediary. If it remains unresolved, you can consider filing through SCORES if the complaint meets the platform’s requirements.

Check eligibility and deadlines
The published SCORES FAQ says a complaint must relate to the securities market and be filed within one year of the cause of action. It identifies categories that are not handled as ordinary SCORES complaints, including matters outside securities-market jurisdiction, anonymous or unsupported submissions, some matters pending in court or insolvency, and market-intelligence reports. Check the live FAQ before filing because the applicable category and procedure matter.
Make the complaint specific and attach supporting documents. The guidance says incomplete or unspecified complaints, and allegations without supporting documents, are not treated as complaints.

Track the response and review windows
For current submissions, follow the live SCORES 2.0 portal rather than relying on older general guidance for response timing. If you are dissatisfied with the entity’s Action Taken Report, request first-level review within 15 days. If you remain dissatisfied after the designated body’s Action Taken Report, request second-level review within 15 days. Track the case in the portal and act within the window shown there.
5. Choose the route that matches the issue
The right channel depends on who regulates the entity, whether you seek individual grievance redressal or want to report suspected misconduct, and whether a court, insolvency, or dispute-resolution process is already involved.
Best Value
- Eligible securities-market grievance: Approach the relevant company or intermediary, then use SCORES if unresolved and eligible.
- Suspected securities-law violation: SEBI’s market-intelligence portal is for information about possible violations, not a substitute for an individual grievance or refund claim.
- Issue outside SEBI’s remit: SEBI Investor’s support information directs users to the authority responsible for the issue, including other regulators or ministries such as RBI, IRDAI, PFRDA, or MCA.
- Eligible securities-market dispute: SEBI Investor also describes Smart ODR as a dispute-resolution route. Arbitration stages can involve costs, depending on the claim and ODR institution; using ODR does not guarantee a refund.
6. Avoid losing more money to recovery promises
Be cautious of anyone who contacts you claiming they can secure a guaranteed refund for a fee or an additional investment. SEBI warns against assured-return practices and advises investors to seek investment advice only from entities registered under its Investment Adviser Regulations. Check an adviser through SEBI’s official investor resources before relying on advice or paying for it.
