Before trusting a growth chart, determine what was delivered, when control transferred, how much consideration was earned, and how the figure reconciles with bookings, billings, cash collections and operating usage.
The most reliable starting point is the company’s latest audited filing, including its revenue-recognition note, contract-balance disclosures, remaining performance obligations, metric definitions, risk factors and auditor’s report. The framework below helps you test those disclosures without assuming that any particular AI company is misstating its results.

1. Identify what the customer is promised
Revenue follows the underlying promise in the contract, not the marketing label attached to an AI product. A platform called “recurring revenue” might provide continuous software access; another product might be a delivered license, usage-based inference service, implementation project or a bundle containing several obligations. Those arrangements can produce very different recognition patterns.

Aware’s 2024 filing describes the standard’s five-step model:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Identify the contract with a customer. Check whether the arrangement has approval, identifiable rights and payment terms, and whether collection is probable under the company’s accounting policy.
- Identify the performance obligations. Determine which promises are distinct. A hosted model, implementation, training, support and a separately delivered license may not all be one obligation.
- Determine the transaction price. Include fixed consideration and estimate variable amounts such as usage fees, service-level credits, rebates or incentives, subject to the standard’s constraints.
- Allocate the transaction price. For a bundle, management generally allocates consideration using relative standalone selling prices. Read how those prices are established and updated.
- Recognize revenue when or as each obligation is satisfied. Recognition may occur at delivery, over a service term, or as usage is consumed, depending on what the customer receives and when control transfers.
Do not project a peer’s treatment onto the company you are analyzing. The issuer’s own contract descriptions, policy language and explanations of changes control the analysis.
Map common AI offerings to their likely recognition question
| Commercial arrangement | Question to ask in the filing | Timing issue to test |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted AI software subscription | Is the company providing a stand-ready service throughout the term? | Revenue may be recognized ratably over the contract period if service is provided evenly. |
| Consumption or API service | Is consideration based on tokens, calls, compute, storage or another usage measure? | Revenue may follow customer utilization; forecasts, credits and cut-off matter. |
| Delivered software license | Does the customer obtain control of a distinct license at a point in time? | Recognition may occur on delivery, with support or updates treated separately. |
| Implementation or integration | Is the work distinct from the hosted service, and who controls the resulting output? | Revenue may be recognized as work is performed or at a specified milestone. |
| Bundled platform contract | Which promises are distinct, and what standalone selling prices were used? | Allocation assumptions can move revenue between periods and obligations. |
UiPath’s fiscal 2026 filing illustrates one subscription pattern: SaaS is described as a stand-ready obligation recognized ratably over the term. That example is useful for understanding the concept, but it is not a universal rule for every AI subscription; contract terms can differ.
2. Separate revenue from bookings, billings, cash and ARR
Headlines often combine several measures that answer different questions. Reported revenue is an accounting measure for the period. Bookings generally describe signed commitments, billings describe invoices issued, cash describes collections, and annual recurring revenue (ARR) is an operating metric whose definition varies by issuer. None should be treated as interchangeable without a reconciliation.

|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | Consideration recorded after the company satisfies performance obligations under its accounting policy. | Read the policy, disaggregation, cut-off and any material estimates. |
| Bookings or contract value | A company-defined measure of signed orders or committed value. | Definition, duration, cancellation rights, renewal assumptions, exclusions and reconciliation to revenue. |
| Billings | Amounts invoiced to customers, often on a schedule set by the contract. | Invoice timing, up-front fees, usage true-ups and the bridge to contract liabilities and revenue. |
| Cash collected | Amounts received from customers during the period. | Collection timing, annual prepayments, financing terms, refunds and changes in receivables. |
| ARR or recurring-revenue metric | An operating estimate of recurring run-rate value at a point in time. | Issuer definition, included products, foreign-exchange treatment, churn, expansion, usage assumptions and reconciliation to reported revenue. |
Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 filing provides a practical example of why timing differs: cloud subscriptions are generally recognized ratably over the contract period, while consumption services are recognized according to customer utilization. The filing also notes that invoice timing may differ from revenue recognition. Apply those same questions to an AI company: ask when invoices are issued, when usage is measured, and what happens if a customer cancels, receives credits or never consumes the contracted capacity.

When management presents a non-GAAP or operating metric, locate its definition and any reconciliation in the filing or earnings materials. A large bookings number can be economically important while still representing work that has not yet been delivered. Conversely, revenue can rise as previously billed obligations are fulfilled even if current-period bookings weaken.
3. Read contract liabilities, contract assets and remaining obligations
Contract liabilities and unearned revenue
Unearned revenue, often called a contract liability, usually represents billing or payment received before the company has delivered the related service. It is not automatically a sign of strong future growth or a warning sign. Examine whether the balance is growing because customers prepay for longer terms, because billings are accelerating, because contracts are becoming larger, or because recognition is being deferred for another reason.
Contract assets
A contract asset can arise when the company has recognized revenue for a service already transferred but its right to bill remains conditional on another contractual event. Review the conditions, expected billing date and allowance for collectability. A contract asset is not the same as an account receivable, whose right to payment is generally unconditional except for the passage of time.

Remaining performance obligations
Remaining performance obligations (RPO) provide context about contracted work that has not yet been recognized. They are not guaranteed future revenue. Read the company’s definition, expected timing of conversion, contract duration, exclusions and treatment of cancellable or optional amounts. Compare the balance with prior periods and with recognized revenue, but avoid assuming that every dollar will convert on the original schedule.

Microsoft’s filing discusses unearned revenue and the relationship between contract timing and recognition. Use that disclosure style as a guide, not as a benchmark for another issuer. The important questions are issuer-specific: what is included, what is excluded, and how much of the balance is expected to be recognized within the next twelve months or later.
4. Find the estimates that can move revenue
Revenue figures can depend on judgment even when the underlying contracts are genuine. Bundles may require management to identify distinct obligations and estimate standalone selling prices. Variable consideration may depend on future usage, service-level performance, refunds, credits, rebates or customer acceptance. Read the accounting note for the assumptions, constraints and sensitivity the company discloses.
Sabre’s fiscal 2025 filing describes judgment in complex arrangements and explains that changes in estimates can affect revenue recognized in future periods. For an AI company, look for comparable disclosures about:
Recommended Free Tools
- How standalone selling prices are established when a product is rarely sold separately.
- How usage, consumption or minimum-commitment estimates are calculated and updated.
- Whether implementation, customization, support and model access are combined or separated.
- How refunds, credits, service-level penalties and renewal incentives affect variable consideration.
- Whether contract modifications are treated as a separate contract, a prospective change or a cumulative catch-up.
- What caused a material change in an estimate from the prior period.
Do not infer manipulation from the existence of estimates; ASC 606 requires estimates in many ordinary arrangements. The diligence question is whether the policy is clearly described, consistently applied, supported by contract evidence and accompanied by a credible explanation when assumptions change.

5. Test the revenue story against customer adoption
Accounting tells you when value was recognized. Operating disclosures help you judge whether the commercial story is plausible. Review customer adoption, usage, retention, concentration and the risks management identifies as capable of reducing demand.
Adoption and usage
For consumption products, compare recognized revenue with disclosed usage indicators such as active customers, volume, seats, tokens or workloads, when available. A rising customer count with falling usage per customer can produce a different outlook from a stable customer base expanding consumption. Do not manufacture a ratio when the company does not define the numerator and denominator consistently.
Retention and expansion
Determine whether retention metrics include only subscription customers, exclude very small accounts, incorporate usage, or assume renewals. Check the period covered and whether acquisitions or foreign-exchange movements affect the calculation. A retention percentage without its definition is not comparable across companies.
Customer concentration
Read concentration disclosures and major-customer risk factors. Revenue dependent on a small number of customers can be volatile even when reported growth is high. Concentration may also affect contract terms, pricing concessions and collection risk.
Best Value
Demand, competition and regulation
Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 filing links cloud and AI performance to customer demand, technology changes, competition and regulation. Those are examples of contextual risks, not universal thresholds. Compare the target company’s own risk factors with its growth assumptions: capacity constraints, model costs, data rights, privacy rules, export controls, procurement cycles and competitive pricing can all affect future consumption or renewals.
6. Use a like-for-like comparison when evaluating two AI companies
A comparison is meaningful only after normalizing the accounting and measurement choices. Build a worksheet using the same reporting period and accounting regime, then record the following:
| Comparison axis | Evidence to capture |
|---|---|
| Promised service and revenue model | Subscription, consumption, license, implementation or bundle; point-in-time versus over-time obligations. |
| Recognition timing | Policy language, transfer point, usage measurement and cut-off around period end. |
| Operating metrics | Exact definition, included products, period, exclusions and reconciliation to audited revenue. |
| Contract balances | Contract liabilities, assets, receivables, movement from the prior period and expected recognition. |
| Remaining obligations | Amount, duration, expected conversion, exclusions and cancellability. |
| Estimates and changes | Standalone selling prices, variable consideration, modifications and material changes in assumptions. |
| Customer evidence | Adoption, usage, retention, concentration and any disclosed cohort or regional information. |
| Reporting basis | Accounting framework, fiscal year, geography, currency, auditor and whether periods are comparable. |
The filings cited above illustrate why equal-looking metrics may not describe equal economics. A subscription recognized ratably, a usage service recognized as consumed and a bundle allocated across obligations should not be ranked by headline growth alone.

7. A filing-first diligence workflow
- Download the latest annual and quarterly filings. Confirm the fiscal period, accounting framework, geographic scope and auditor’s report before extracting numbers.
- Read the revenue-recognition note end to end. Mark each product, performance obligation, recognition pattern, significant estimate and disaggregation category.
- Trace one reported dollar through the statements. Compare revenue with receivables, contract liabilities, contract assets, cash flow and any disclosed billings or bookings bridge.
- Define every alternative metric. Write down the issuer’s exact definition for ARR, bookings, RPO, remaining obligations or consumption, including exclusions and reconciliation.
- Inspect year-over-year movements. Separate price, volume, acquisitions, foreign exchange, contract timing, usage and accounting-estimate changes where the filing permits.
- Read risk factors and customer disclosures. Test whether concentration, churn, implementation delays, model economics or regulation could undermine the growth narrative.
- Compare peers only after normalization. Use matching periods and document differences in contract terms, recognition timing, metric definitions and accounting regime.
- Record unresolved questions. If the filing does not establish a figure or definition, label it “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
8. Red flags that require investigation, not an automatic verdict
- Bookings, billings or ARR grow sharply while recognized revenue, collections or customer usage do not, with no clear timing explanation.
- Contract liabilities rise materially but the company gives little information about duration, conversion or cancellations.
- RPO is presented as future revenue without explaining exclusions, cancellability or expected timing.
- A bundled arrangement has significant standalone-selling-price estimates, yet the filing gives no understandable basis for allocation.
- Usage forecasts, credits, refunds or service-level adjustments change materially without a quantified explanation.
- Revenue concentration increases while retention or customer-level evidence becomes less transparent.
- Management changes a non-GAAP metric definition, adds or removes products, or changes the period without restating prior comparisons.
- The company and its peer appear comparable only because they use the same label, while their contracts and recognition patterns differ.
Each item is a prompt to read the note, ask a precise question and reconcile the numbers. None, by itself, proves that revenue is misstated.
9. What the filings can—and cannot—establish
Company filings can establish the stated accounting policy, reported amounts, definitions, contract-balance movements, disclosed estimates and management’s identified risks. They cannot, on their own, guarantee that every customer will renew, consume forecast capacity or pay on schedule. Nor do the cited filings provide an independent statistic showing how reliable AI-company revenue claims are across the industry; no such general benchmark should be invented.
Before making an investment decision, confirm the target company’s newest filing and auditor’s report. Check the relevant geography, edition or product tier, reporting date and accounting framework. A careful conclusion is often conditional: the revenue is recognized under a described policy, alternative metrics reconcile—or do not reconcile—to that revenue, contract balances explain timing, and customer evidence either supports or weakens the commercial narrative.
