Brokerages do not all make money the same way, and customer protections such as SIPC coverage do not protect investors who own the brokerage’s stock.
Start with the company’s latest filings
Read the issuer’s latest Form 10-K and Form 10-Q through SEC EDGAR. FINRA explains that a 10-K is an annual audited filing and a 10-Q is a quarterly unaudited filing in its stock-evaluation guidance.

In each filing, review the business description, financial statements, management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), risk factors, debt and liquidity disclosures, and legal or regulatory matters. Compare results across periods, and read the footnotes: they can qualify figures or explain changes that a headline or summary omits.

Use the company’s own disclosures to map its services and revenue sources. Depending on the business, these may include trade execution, interest earned on customer cash, margin lending, custody, securities lending, investment products, or technology services. Do not assume that trading commissions explain the results.
#1 Best Overall
- Comes with secure packaging
- Easy to read text
- It can be a gift option
For instance, Interactive Brokers describes custody, prime brokerage, financing, securities lending, and technology offerings in its 2024 Form 10-K. Those are examples of one company’s activities, not a template for every brokerage.
Test how durable earnings may be
Ask how revenue and profit could respond to changes in trading activity, customer assets, interest rates, cash balances, or other conditions identified by the company. Industry activity can vary with market conditions; determine the issuer’s actual sensitivity from its filings rather than assuming a fixed relationship.
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Comes with Proper Binding
Track operating expenses, net income, cash generation, debt, and liquidity over comparable periods. Then compare the changes with management’s explanation in the MD&A. Customer or asset measures may help where disclosed, but their definitions and reporting periods should be consistent when making comparisons.
Evaluate the risks disclosed for this issuer
Read the current risk-factor section for evidence about the company you are considering. Areas to check include:
- Market conditions and trading-volume sensitivity.
- Regulation, compliance obligations, and related costs.
- Operational resilience, cybersecurity, and privacy.
- Litigation, business or customer concentration, and capital needs.
- Risks tied to particular products or geographies.
Robinhood’s 2024 filing, for example, discusses market conditions, changing regulation, compliance infrastructure, privacy, and crypto price or trading-volume volatility. These are illustrative disclosures from that filing year, not claims about every brokerage or a substitute for checking a company’s current filing. See its 2024 Form 10-K.
Assess management and competitive position
FINRA’s stock-evaluation guidance suggests considering whether the company’s managers are experienced, its products or services are in demand, and the business has performed and is positioned for growth and profitability. Check those claims against reported results, disclosed customer or asset measures, competition, and the company’s own risk factors.

Decide whether the share price is reasonable
A sound business is not automatically an attractively priced stock. Compare the current valuation with the company’s own history and relevant peers, while accounting for differences in business mix, growth, risk, and capital structure. Use consistent accounting periods and definitions; an earnings multiple, for example, can mislead if the earnings periods or business models differ.

There is no universal valuation threshold or fair-value estimate established for an unspecified brokerage. A valuation judgment requires a named issuer and current market data.
Best Value
Keep customer protections separate from stock risk
SIPC may protect eligible customer property when a member brokerage fails or customer assets are missing, subject to SIPC’s rules and limits. It does not protect against declines in the value of securities. This customer-account protection does not insure shares that an investor owns in the brokerage company. Check Investor.gov’s brokerage-account information and current SIPC terms for the relevant account.
Use broker-check tools for the right question
Background and disciplinary records can help when evaluating a brokerage as a service provider, but they do not replace analysis of its financial condition, valuation, or stock risk. Investor.gov recommends checking a broker’s and representative’s background when choosing a broker; its background-check resources address that purpose.
If you are comparing brokerage stocks
Compare companies on the same periods and definitions, then account for differences in their business models. Useful dimensions include:
- Revenue mix and sensitivity to trading or interest rates.
- Operating profitability and expense trends.
- Debt, liquidity, and capital needs.
- Customer or asset growth, where disclosed.
- Regulatory, litigation, cybersecurity, and operational risks.
- Competitive position, product breadth, and valuation against history and relevant peers.
No particular brokerage or ticker is specified here, so the evidence does not support ranking issuers or identifying a best stock.
