Investors in quantum-computing and other deep-tech startups must answer two linked questions: does the technology work well enough to create meaningful performance, and can the company turn that performance into a product customers will repeatedly buy? The strongest diligence connects measurable technical evidence to a defined use case, a credible delivery path, the right team and enough capital to reach the next value-creating milestone.
Raw qubit counts, a single benchmark, a grant award or a company roadmap cannot answer those questions alone. Deep-tech ventures often validate technology and product-market fit at the same time, so investors need a framework that combines engineering proof, customer evidence and financing discipline.

Start with the investment question, not the headline metric
A quantum startup may describe more qubits, faster gates, a new architecture or an impressive laboratory demonstration. Those facts matter only when they improve a real task for a defined customer under repeatable conditions. Ask what has been demonstrated, who measured it, how often it can be reproduced and what the result changes for the buyer.
The same principle applies outside quantum computing. A deep-tech company may own valuable science or engineering know-how long before it has meaningful revenue. Conventional growth metrics can therefore understate progress during the period when the company is proving the technology, refining the product and discovering which customers can adopt it. The World Bank Group’s 2021 work on deep-tech finance describes this overlap between technology validation and product-market-fit discovery, as well as the difficulty of valuing intangible assets.

There is no universally validated investor checklist for this sector. The framework below is an editorial synthesis of the questions raised by the Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C), company SEC filings and the World Economic Forum’s governance principles. Treat issuer filings as company disclosures, not independent validation.
1. Test technical feasibility and defensibility
Demand evidence under stated conditions
For every claimed advantage, request the test conditions: hardware or software version, workload, baseline, error rate, run count, environmental constraints and whether an independent party reproduced the result. A laboratory result can be genuine and still be too narrow, expensive or fragile for production use.
- What technical problem is novel, and why do existing approaches fail or cost too much?
- Which results are measured today rather than projected on a roadmap?
- Can customers or qualified third parties reproduce the result?
- What performance degrades when the system is enlarged, moved into a data center or connected to production data?
Look for more than patents
Defensibility can come from patents, but also from specialized know-how, architecture, manufacturing processes, proprietary data, control software, integration expertise or a difficult-to-rebuild supply chain. QED-C tracks intellectual property as one industry dimension; the World Bank Group notes that intangible assets are difficult to value. A large patent count is therefore evidence to examine, not proof of a durable moat.

Companies are pursuing superconducting, trapped-ion, neutral-atom, photonic, solid-state-spin and other approaches. A 2026 SEC filing states that no modality has yet demonstrated a definitive route to large-scale, fault-tolerant commercial deployment. Do not rank modalities from the label alone. For each company, map the engineering constraints, required facilities, manufacturing plan, control stack, error-correction path and integration requirements to the proposed application.

| Approach listed in company filings | Diligence questions |
|---|---|
| Superconducting | What cryogenic, fabrication and control requirements determine cost, yield and scale? |
| Trapped-ion | How do system size, control complexity and operating environment affect repeatable customer access? |
| Neutral-atom | What scaling, stability and software-control evidence is demonstrated on the target workload? |
| Photonic | Which components and manufacturing steps are production-ready, and where are losses or integration dependencies concentrated? |
| Solid-state spin and other approaches | What evidence supports the company’s specific implementation, and which unresolved dependencies could delay deployment? |
The table is a diligence map, not a prediction of winners. The filing’s taxonomy shows the range of approaches; it does not establish that every company faces identical bottlenecks.
2. Use system-level milestones that predict usefulness
Quantinuum says in an SEC-filed registration statement: “We evaluate the performance and commercial readiness of our platform using system-level metrics that we—and our customers—believe are indicative of real-world value and the ability to produce successful outcomes and solutions, rather than early stage and traditional metrics, such as raw qubit count or gate speed.” This is the company’s stated approach, not an industry-wide standard.
Metrics to request from a quantum hardware company
- Fidelity: How accurately do operations and measurements work on the actual system used for the claimed result?
- Logical-qubit count: How many error-corrected qubits are available, under what code and operating assumptions?
- Scalability: What happens to yield, control, error rates, throughput and cost as the system grows?
- Time-to-solution: How long does the complete workflow take, including queueing, data preparation, error mitigation or correction and classical post-processing?
- Full-stack performance: Can the hardware, compiler, software, cloud access, security and support deliver the customer’s end-to-end outcome?
These measures are meaningful only in context. A faster gate may not reduce the time to solve a customer’s problem; more physical qubits may not produce more useful logical qubits. Insist on a baseline against the best classical or incumbent method for the same task.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMilestones that connect research to deployment
One quantum-company filing identifies error correction, scalable manufacturing, useful algorithms and software, integration with classical systems, and sustained public and private investment as factors affecting growth. Use those topics to build a milestone schedule:

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Demonstrate the target workload: Run a customer-relevant problem with a published baseline and repeatable results.
- Show reliability: Report performance over repeated runs and across the operating conditions customers will face.
- Prove the production path: Detail component sourcing, fabrication or assembly, test yield, serviceability and capacity expansion.
- Complete the software workflow: Show how data enters, how jobs are scheduled, how classical systems participate and how results are validated.
- Reach a buying milestone: Convert technical access into a paid deployment, recurring contract or another clearly defined commercial commitment.
Each milestone should have an owner, a cost, a date range and an objective pass/fail measure. A roadmap without those details is a narrative, not evidence.
3. Identify the customer problem and buying path
Make the use case concrete
Ask the company to name the buyer, the job being improved, the current alternative and the economic value of improvement. “Many industries could benefit from quantum computing” is not a customer thesis. A credible case identifies a workflow, the data required, the decision-maker, the deployment environment and the consequence of an inaccurate or late result.
- Who signs the contract and who operates the system?
- What classical software, cloud environment or laboratory equipment must be integrated?
- What security, privacy, compliance and procurement reviews are required?
- How is value measured: lower cost, faster discovery, higher yield, reduced risk or a new capability?
Separate access, pilots and revenue
Research access, a demonstration, a grant, a paid proof of concept and a production deployment are different signals. A pilot can show serious interest without proving repeatable demand. For each customer relationship, record who paid, what was delivered, whether the customer used the result in a live process and what would trigger renewal or expansion.
SEC-filed material describes enterprise deployment, usability, adoption and integration with classical computing as continuing commercialization challenges. That means the product may need to include consulting, workflow design, APIs, support and change management rather than a machine alone.

Test whether the business scales beyond bespoke work
Services can be appropriate during early validation, but investors should understand the mix between one-off engineering and repeatable product revenue. Ask how a new customer is onboarded, what work must be repeated, how gross margin changes with volume and whether the same platform serves multiple customers without exposing confidential data.
4. Evaluate team coverage and execution capacity
The team must cover the disciplines implied by the product: science or engineering, software and product development, manufacturing or operations, security and reliability, and enterprise or government sales. QED-C’s 2026 report identifies shortages of people who bridge fields such as quantum physics and engineering or quantum and software development. Treat cross-disciplinary hiring and retention as a diligence question, not as proof that a particular startup has a gap.
Questions for the leadership team
- Who owns the transition from research prototype to engineered system?
- Which critical skills are employees, and which are supplied by contractors, universities or partners?
- Can the company recruit and retain scarce technical talent as financing conditions change?
- Does the commercial leader understand the customer’s procurement and integration process?
- Are incentives tied to reproducible milestones and customer outcomes rather than only headline demonstrations?
5. Match capital to the technical and commercial timeline
Deep-tech ventures may consume substantial capital before conventional traction becomes visible. Build a financing model around milestones, not an arbitrary runway target. Include research and development, specialized facilities, equipment, manufacturing scale-up, cloud or laboratory access, regulatory work, sales cycles and customer integration.

Separate the funding sources
| Source | What it can demonstrate | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Public grant or program funding | Alignment with a funded research or industrial objective and access to non-dilutive capital | Repeatable customer demand or commercial margins |
| Strategic corporate investment | Potential partner access, technical collaboration or customer insight | That the investor will become a long-term buyer |
| Venture investment | Private-market support for the plan at a stated valuation | Independent confirmation that the technology works |
| Customer revenue | Evidence that a buyer paid for a defined deliverable | Scalable economics if delivery remains heavily bespoke |
As reported in a 2026 SEC filing, McKinsey figures put quantum-technology startup funding at nearly $2.0 billion in 2024, compared with about $1.3 billion in 2023. Those are 2024 and 2023 figures attributed to McKinsey by the filing, not a 2026 funding estimate or an independently checked McKinsey quotation.
Best Value
QED-C’s 2026 report presents industry, investment, market, workforce and intellectual-property data current through the end of 2025. Use that cutoff when interpreting its sector observations.
Model the downside case
For each milestone, calculate the cash needed, the likely delay if it slips and the financing available under that delay. Identify dependencies such as a fabrication partner, a government program, a single supplier or a lead customer. A company that reaches a technical milestone but must immediately raise emergency capital may create less investor value than one with a slower but fully financed plan.
6. Check governance, security and responsible use
Quantum systems and enabling software can involve sensitive data, cryptography, dual-use capabilities and high-consequence decisions. Ask how the company handles data access, model or algorithm security, export controls, access logging, incident response and responsible-use review. The World Economic Forum’s 2022 Quantum Computing Governance Principles frames responsible design and adoption as a stakeholder concern; it is governance context, not legal advice or a technical certification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Which customer data enters the system, and where is it stored?
- What third parties can access hardware, software, telemetry or results?
- How are security claims tested and updated as the architecture changes?
- Does the board review dual-use, societal and regulatory risks?
7. Compare startups on the same axes
When comparing companies at different stages or with different business models, apply the same questions while adjusting expectations for maturity. Do not give a pre-revenue hardware company the same revenue threshold as a mature software vendor; do require both to show evidence appropriate to their claims.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Technical evidence | What is demonstrated now, under which conditions, and with what reproducibility? |
| Application value | Which concrete task improves, and how is value measured against the best alternative? |
| System readiness | What scale, reliability, error-correction, manufacturing and integration dependencies remain? |
| Customer validation | Who tested or bought the product, what did they do with it, and is repeat demand visible? |
| Business model | Who pays, for what deliverable, and how does delivery scale beyond bespoke services? |
| Capital and time | How much funding reaches the next value-inflecting milestone, and what if the schedule slips? |
| Team and execution | Does the team cover scientific, engineering, product, operational and commercial work? |
| Risk and governance | Which technical, security, regulatory, supply-chain and responsible-use issues could block adoption? |
These axes are a practical comparison framework, not a validated scoring model published by any one source. Record the evidence and confidence level for each axis instead of forcing every company into a single numerical score.
8. A practical diligence sequence
- Define the investment thesis. State the customer problem, expected technical inflection and time horizon before reviewing the pitch deck.
- Request the evidence pack. Ask for benchmark definitions, raw or auditable results, architecture diagrams, roadmap assumptions, customer references and capitalization details.
- Rebuild the performance claim. Check the baseline, workload, conditions, repetitions and full-stack time-to-solution.
- Interview a technical independent. Use an expert who can challenge modality, error, manufacturing and scaling assumptions without relying on the company’s terminology.
- Verify customer behavior. Confirm what was paid for, deployed, integrated and renewed; distinguish confidentiality constraints from missing evidence.
- Stress-test the operating plan. Model hiring, suppliers, facilities, manufacturing yield, security and support as the company scales.
- Map financing to milestones. Identify the next round’s purpose, dilution risk, non-dilutive funding assumptions and the consequences of a six- or twelve-month delay.
- Write an evidence-based decision memo. Separate demonstrated facts, management forecasts, third-party validation and unresolved risks.
Red flags that deserve a second look
- Raw qubit count or gate speed presented without fidelity, workload, time-to-solution or full-stack context.
- A roadmap that names a future system size but omits manufacturing yield, error correction, cost and staffing assumptions.
- Pilots or research collaborations described as recurring production revenue.
- Grant awards counted as proof of repeatable commercial demand.
- Patent totals used as the sole evidence of defensibility.
- Customer claims that cannot be reconciled with deployment, procurement or integration requirements.
- Capital plans that fund laboratory progress but not manufacturing, support or enterprise sales.
- Issuer statements treated as independent performance verification.
What a strong investment case looks like
A credible case joins four layers: a measurable technical result, a customer problem whose value can be quantified, an execution plan that converts the result into a reliable service or product, and financing that covers the path between milestones. The company does not need mature revenue at the earliest stage, but it does need evidence proportionate to its claims and a clear explanation of what remains uncertain.
For quantum startups especially, the investable signal is not the largest number on a slide. It is consistent progress from experiment to useful system, from useful system to customer workflow and from early customer work to repeatable economics.
