Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a 4K/2160p, 60fps YouTube Live stream, plan around the encoder’s upload bitrate, not your broadband plan’s download speed. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps for H.264. YouTube also recommends keeping 20% bandwidth in reserve, so those figures are not a guarantee that a connection will perform reliably during a live event.
There is no evidence-based nationwide “best” broadband plan: availability and terms vary by address. Check the upload speed available at your home, then test it at the streaming location and time with other household traffic taken into account.
How much upload speed does 4K60 YouTube Live need?
YouTube’s encoder settings distinguish a minimum bitrate from a recommended one. These are settings for the stream sent to YouTube, not a promise from an internet provider about sustained service.
| Encoder codec | YouTube minimum for 4K/2160p at 60fps | YouTube recommended setting |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s current encoder figures, accessed 2026-10-03. Use the recommended setting for planning rather than treating the minimum as a suitable broadband target. The stream’s total bitrate must fit within the upload capacity that is actually available to it. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; concurrent household use and bitrate variation need room too. YouTube’s network guidance puts that reserve plainly: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).”

Turn the encoder setting into a connection target
As a planning calculation, a 35 Mbps stream plus 20% headroom is about 42 Mbps of available upload capacity; a 50 Mbps stream plus 20% is about 60 Mbps. These are arithmetic estimates based on YouTube’s recommended bitrates and headroom guidance, not ISP plan tiers or guarantees. You still need to allow for other devices and activities using the connection.
Download speed is not a substitute. YouTube notes that inbound speed is often higher than outbound speed, while a live encoder sends data outward. Check the upload result specifically.

Which broadband plan in India is enough?
Choose a service that is available at your exact address and has enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen codec, with headroom under realistic conditions. Do not select a plan from its download headline alone, and do not assume an advertised upload figure will be sustained at the time you stream.
Provider examples are local, not a national ranking
Jio’s comparison page accessed 2026-10-03 lists examples of 30/30 Mbps, 100/100 Mbps and 150/150 Mbps upload/download plans. Its Delhi broadband page describes symmetric upload and download speeds for plans there and notes applicable GST. Use regulator data as context
TRAI’s April 2026 report publishes provider- and service-area-specific offered typical speeds and 80th-percentile measured speeds. It can help distinguish a provider’s typical offered upload speed from measured results, but it is aggregate service-area reporting, not a prediction of what one household will sustain at a particular hour. When comparing a figure, keep its provider, service area, report column and period attached to it. TRAI reports.
How to verify a connection before streaming
- Confirm the exact service and terms. Check that the provider serves the streaming address and identify the upload tier for that specific connection. Compare network type, data allowance, fair-use policy, any post-limit speed, validity, installation charges, taxes and total recurring cost.
- Set the intended encoder bitrate and codec. Use YouTube’s recommended 4K60 value for the codec you will actually stream with: 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 50 Mbps for H.264. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 among its encoder settings. Its guidance specifies CBR bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and recommends RTMPS for secure transmission. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
- Measure upload at the real setup. Run an upload speed test from the intended streaming location and, as far as practical, under the time and network conditions expected for the event. A controlled wired test can help isolate Wi-Fi variability, but it does not increase the internet service’s upload capacity.
- Repeat with realistic household use. Test while representative devices and activities are present. YouTube cautions that multiple people sharing a network can reduce the bandwidth available to a stream. Include any primary and backup stream bitrates in the total before adding the recommended headroom.
- Rehearse with representative content. Test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages. A speed test is a snapshot; the rehearsal can reveal problems that a single measurement misses.
YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple viewing formats, but that does not remove the need to deliver the selected ingest resolution and bitrate reliably. For 4K/2160 streams, YouTube sets normal latency; its low-latency improvement option is unavailable. YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Why a 100 Mbps plan may or may not be enough
A “100 Mbps” label alone does not settle the question. If it describes download speed, it says little about the upload available to the encoder. Even if the provider advertises 100 Mbps upload, actual sustained capacity at the streaming location, other network use, and reliability still matter. Compare the measured upload against the selected recommended bitrate plus headroom, rather than inferring suitability from the plan name.
A provider’s symmetric plan example may look ample on paper, but serviceability and plan terms are address-specific, and aggregate regulator measurements cannot certify an individual home connection. Verify locally and rehearse on the connection you intend to use.

Troubleshoot stream health and upload problems
- Upload tests fall below the recommended stream bitrate plus reserve: lower the encoder bitrate or choose a connection with more available upload capacity. Do not assume download speed compensates.
- The test looks adequate, but the stream drops or reports poor health: repeat a sustained rehearsal at the intended time and location. Check for competing household traffic or interruptions; YouTube notes that a connection disruption can break a stream.
- Performance worsens when other people are online: retest with that traffic present and account for it in the available bandwidth. The stream only gets the capacity left after shared use.
- Wi-Fi results vary between tests: run a controlled test at the streaming location, including a wired test if practical, to separate local wireless variation from the provider connection. A cable may help test the local network path; it cannot raise the ISP’s upload speed.
- The stream is stable but viewers experience delay: 4K/2160 streams use normal latency on YouTube; the low-latency improvement option is not available for them.
