Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with automatic instrumentation for your web framework and common clients, then add manual spans, metrics, and events wherever only your application knows the business meaning. Initialize the OpenTelemetry SDK before instrumented modules load, give every service a stable identity, export to a backend you can operate, and tune sampling and batching to preserve useful failures and slow requests without overwhelming storage.
What application instrumentation is supposed to answer
Monitoring is useful only when each signal answers a specific operational question. A trace explains the structure and timing of one request or message. A metric shows whether a behavior is becoming more or less common across many requests. A log or span event preserves detailed facts about one moment, such as a validation failure or a downstream response code. Effective instrumentation connects those signals through a consistent service identity and trace context.

Instrumentation is not the same as installing a dashboard. Your code, SDK, instrumented libraries, and exporter form a pipeline. If the SDK is not loaded, instrumented calls may produce no telemetry at all. OpenTelemetry documentation puts the requirement plainly: Unless your application imports the OpenTelemetry SDK, your instrumentation does nothing and doesn’t impact application performance.

First inventory the runtime, framework, HTTP or RPC clients, database drivers, message clients, and any monitoring hooks already present. Select the OpenTelemetry SDK and supported automatic instrumentation for that stack. Automatic hooks are the fastest way to cover operations that have stable library boundaries, but coverage differs by language and library.

| Boundary | What automatic instrumentation can reveal | What you still need to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Inbound HTTP or RPC | Request route, method, status, duration, and parent trace context | Which business operation the request represents and which outcome matters |
| Outbound HTTP or RPC | Destination call timing, status, and errors | Whether the call is a dependency, a retry, or part of a named workflow |
| Database client | Logical database operations, duration, and failures | Safe query attributes, transaction boundaries, and useful business context |
| Messaging client | Publish, receive, process, and acknowledgement activity | Message type, workflow outcome, retry state, and idempotency context |
Instrument at the library’s own level rather than wrapping every lower-level network operation. A database client may already represent a logical request; adding separate socket spans can create duplicate timing and noise. Before enabling a manual wrapper, inspect existing spans for the same call path and keep one authoritative representation.
Inventory before you instrument
- List every process that serves traffic, consumes messages, runs scheduled jobs, or generates reports.
- Record the framework and client libraries that create inbound, outbound, database, and messaging operations.
- Search for existing agents, middleware, interceptors, exporters, and log-to-trace integrations.
- Choose one representative success, one failure, and one slow operation for later verification.
Add manual instrumentation for application meaning
Automatic hooks know that a request reached a route or that a query failed; they do not know that the request was a checkout, a report build, or a message that should be retried. Add manual instrumentation around meaningful operations that cross a business or processing boundary. Prefer one span for a coherent operation over a span for every internal function. Excessive fine-grained spans make traces harder to read and increase volume without adding a decision a responder can make.
Useful manual span boundaries
- Checkout or payment orchestration: create a span for the workflow, then let automatic HTTP and database spans appear as children.
- Report generation: record the report type, requested time range, completion status, and row-count bucket if those attributes are permitted.
- Message processing: create a processing span that covers validation, business work, acknowledgement, and the final outcome.
- Scheduled jobs: identify the job name, scheduled versus actual start, and whether the run completed, skipped, or retried.
Capture outcome and failure context at the operation boundary: a controlled result such as “rejected,” “timed out,” or “retry scheduled” is more useful than a generic exception alone. Record exception details according to your data policy, and do not put full payloads, credentials, tokens, or unrestricted customer data into attributes.

Use traces, metrics, and logs for different jobs
| Signal | Best question | Design guidance | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traces | What happened during this request or message, and where was the time spent? | Use meaningful operation spans, parent-child relationships, status, and selected attributes. | Sampling affects how complete the retained picture is. |
| Metrics | How often, how slowly, or how successfully is this behavior occurring over time? | Use aggregate counters, durations, and controlled dimensions suitable for dashboards and alerts. | Unbounded labels create too many time series. |
| Logs and span events | What detailed fact or state change occurred at a point in time? | Attach trace context when the logging integration supports it; use events for concise, trace-local details. | Verbose records can duplicate traces and increase storage and review burden. |
Design trace structure first
Give spans names that describe the operation a responder recognizes, such as checkout.process or report.generate, rather than an unstable identifier or an internal helper name. Keep standard protocol attributes aligned with OpenTelemetry semantic conventions so tools can interpret them consistently. A trace should let a reader move from the inbound request to dependency calls and the manual business operation without guessing which spans belong together.
Use metrics for aggregate behavior
Metrics are where you alert and examine trends. Typical concepts include request or message counts, operation duration, failure counts, queue age, and retry totals, but the exact set depends on your service objectives. Keep dimensions bounded: route templates are safer than raw URLs, and a finite result category is safer than a user ID. Define the allowed values before emitting the series.
Keep logs and events detailed but deliberate
Logs can hold a diagnostic record that would be too verbose as span attributes. Span events are appropriate for a concise point-in-time fact inside an existing operation, such as “validation failed” with a reason code. Correlate records with trace and span identifiers when your logging integration supports it, and avoid copying an entire log message into every span attribute.

Make telemetry interpretable across services
Apply the relevant OpenTelemetry semantic conventions for spans, metrics, logs, and events. Set a stable service.name for each deployable service and include service.version when you can produce it reliably; version data makes regressions easier to associate with a release. When a convention specifies a schema URL, record that schema so downstream tooling knows which attribute definitions were used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsControl names and attributes
- Use a consistent operation naming pattern across services, with the logical action first and implementation detail second.
- Prefer bounded attributes such as route templates, protocol names, outcome categories, and region codes.
- Do not use request IDs, timestamps, full URLs, stack traces, or arbitrary payload fields as metric dimensions.
- Review attribute cardinality before production rollout; a field that is unique per request belongs in a trace or log, not a metric label.
- Define redaction and retention rules for personal, financial, authentication, and internal security data.
Initialize the SDK before instrumented modules load
Initialization order is a correctness requirement, not a cosmetic preference. The JavaScript setup guidance warns that if the SDK starts too late, libraries may acquire no-op API implementations and remain uninstrumented. Put initialization in the process entry point or the earliest supported bootstrap hook, before importing modules that create clients or register framework handlers.
- Create the resource identity: set the service name and, when available, service version and deployment environment using stable values.
- Register providers: enable the tracing and metrics providers required by your application; add logging integration only when you have a clear correlation and retention plan.
- Enable automatic instrumentation: select integrations for the framework and clients you actually use, and disable overlapping hooks that would create duplicate spans.
- Add manual instrumentation: wrap the business and job boundaries identified during inventory, keeping standard attributes on standard operations.
- Configure an exporter: use a console exporter for local debugging, then configure an exporter that sends telemetry to the backend operated by your team.
- Use batching for normal traffic: the cited JavaScript guide recommends a batch span processor in most cases rather than synchronously exporting every span in the request path.
- Start the application only after setup: ensure clients, routes, and workers are loaded after providers and instrumentations are registered.
The official Java guidance recommends starting with the Java agent for Java applications; that advice is specific to Java and is not a universal answer for other runtimes. For JavaScript, automatic instrumentation is a starting point followed by manual enrichment. Always use the current setup page for your language because package names and configuration details change. Java’s official instrumentation entry point is OpenTelemetry Java instrumentation.

Choose sampling and export settings deliberately
Sampling decides which traces are recorded or retained; it is not a quality score for the application. There is no universal sampling percentage. Base the decision on traffic volume, the need to retain errors and slow requests, backend limits, investigation requirements, and data sensitivity. A high-volume endpoint may need a lower baseline rate, while a low-volume or critical workflow may justify retaining every trace.
Keep diagnostically important traces
- Preserve failed operations and requests above a latency threshold when your collector or backend supports policy-based retention.
- Use consistent sampling decisions across services so a distributed trace does not contain an unexplained gap at every hop.
- Review sampling after major traffic, architecture, or incident-response changes.
Batch and protect the request path
Batch export reduces synchronous work during normal requests. Set bounded queue sizes, export timeouts, and retry behavior appropriate to the runtime. Decide what happens when the exporter or backend is unavailable: application availability usually comes first, so telemetry should fail safely rather than block user traffic indefinitely. Monitor dropped spans, metric export errors, and queue saturation so silent data loss is visible.

Verify the pipeline end to end
Do not stop at “the process started.” Exercise a representative success, failure, and slow path and inspect the resulting telemetry in the destination.
Best Value
- Confirm that every record has the expected service name and, where configured, version and environment.
- Follow a request from its inbound span to database, RPC, or messaging children and verify parentage.
- Check that failures carry a useful status and controlled reason, without sensitive payloads.
- Compare a deliberate slow operation with its metric duration and trace timings.
- Generate a log during a traced request and verify trace correlation if your logging integration supports it.
- Inspect metric dimensions for unexpected high-cardinality values.
- Review exporter queues and errors during a backend interruption or restart.
Troubleshoot common instrumentation failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| No spans or metrics appear | SDK initialization happened after instrumented modules loaded, or no exporter is configured. | Move bootstrap earlier, verify provider registration, and test with a local console exporter. |
| Every call appears twice | Automatic instrumentation and a manual network wrapper cover the same operation. | Keep the library-level span and retain only manual context that adds business meaning. |
| Trace starts but has no children | Context propagation is missing across an async, thread, process, or message boundary. | Enable the supported propagator and inspect the handoff at that boundary. |
| Metrics become unmanageable | A label contains a user ID, raw URL, error text, or another unbounded value. | Replace it with a route template or finite category; keep unique detail in traces or logs. |
| Logs overwhelm storage | Verbose payloads or repeated events duplicate trace data. | Reduce fields, use event reason codes, sample noisy records, and enforce redaction. |
| Requests slow during an outage | Synchronous export or unbounded exporter retries are blocking application work. | Use batching, finite timeouts, bounded queues, and a fail-safe exporter policy. |
Select a telemetry destination without confusing it with instrumentation
An observability backend is where telemetry is stored, queried, visualized, and retained; it is optional infrastructure, not a substitute for SDK setup. Evaluate destinations against your deployment model, retention requirements, access controls, query capabilities, regional constraints, and cost. The official guidance demonstrates a console exporter for local debugging and expects an appropriate exporter for real destinations. Keep the application instrumentation portable enough that changing a backend does not require rewriting every business span.
A practical rollout plan
- Map the service: document processes, entry points, dependencies, workers, and scheduled jobs.
- Establish the baseline: enable supported automatic instrumentation and inspect existing coverage for duplicates.
- Define operation names: choose the business workflows and outcomes that responders need to recognize.
- Enrich manually: add spans and selected attributes at those boundaries, plus metrics for aggregate behavior.
- Connect context: correlate logs with traces where supported and document redaction rules.
- Set volume policy: choose sampling, batching, queue, and timeout settings from traffic and diagnostic needs.
- Validate representative paths: test success, failure, latency, retries, and backend interruption.
- Review continuously: remove noisy spans, watch cardinality and dropped telemetry, and update conventions when services or schemas change.
Decision framework: what to add first
If you have no monitoring, start with SDK initialization, service identity, automatic inbound and dependency instrumentation, and a working exporter. If traces exist but cannot explain a workflow, add one manual span around that workflow rather than instrumenting every function. If responders cannot see trends, add bounded metrics for volume, duration, and outcomes. If they can see a failure but not its cause, add concise events or correlated logs. Reassess sampling only after you know which evidence an incident requires.
The strongest design is intentionally layered: automatic hooks provide reliable technical coverage, manual spans express application meaning, metrics reveal aggregate health, and logs or events preserve the detailed context needed to explain exceptional cases. Shared conventions, early initialization, controlled cardinality, and a deliberate export policy make those layers usable together.
