She told Creative Bloq that she had a deep interest in dresses and fashion history, and that Ehlers-Danlos syndrome had prevented her from pursuing costume design professionally. She said making the game gave her a way back to sewing: “I grew up sewing with my mom, so Dressmaker has been a really lovely way for me to reconnect with that.”

She also described what she finds satisfying about the creative process: “It’s really getting to put those things together and make your own vision that I find so satisfying, and we wanted to bring that through in the game.” The interview presents the game as a meaningful connection to an existing interest—not as medical treatment or a replacement career.
What did Becker contribute, and who made the game?
The official team account says Becker designs and curates dress pieces, aesthetics, and the game’s overall feel when her health allows, and that she playtests it. It identifies Jonathan as the original creator, Ruan as main programmer, and Sara as the artist responsible for most dress pieces, fabrics, and accessories, alongside other Free Lives colleagues and outside contributors. The game’s inspiration was personal, but its development was collaborative.

What does the game include?
In its 2026 Steam launch announcement, the team described the following scope. These are developer-published figures:
- Approximately 35 hours of story commissions, excluding off-rack dresses.
- Over 150 dress pieces.
- Over 450 fabrics.
- Over 350 accessories.
Those features give players a broad set of materials and components to work with, while keeping the focus on making and customizing dresses rather than professional garment production.
