What Inspired Dressmaker? The Personal Story Behind the Steam Game

Dressmaker began with a personal aim: lead developer Jonathan Hau-Yoon wanted his partner, Sabrina Becker, to be able to stay connected to dressmaking after a medical condition affected her plans for costume design. The result is a cozy simulation about choosing fabric, cutting patterns, sewing garments and decorating finished pieces—not a medical tool or a substitute for sewing by hand.

What inspired Dressmaker?

Hau-Yoon conceived Dressmaker as a way for Becker to keep enjoying a craft she loved when a health condition changed how she could pursue it. That origin is reported in a Game Rant article summary and in The Guardian’s feature on the game and Becker’s dressmaking interests. The Guardian identifies hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome as affecting Becker’s plans to work in costume design; the game should not be understood as representing or treating that condition.

Becker described the project as a way to reconnect with sewing, a hobby she grew up doing with her mother. The game’s focus on creative choices—such as selecting fabric and shaping a garment—reflects that connection, while its digital workflow necessarily differs from the physical work of sewing.

How the idea became a game

The Guardian reports that conversations between Becker and Hau-Yoon about dressmaking helped shape the concept. They discussed practical creative decisions, including fitting pattern pieces onto available fabric and respecting the grain line. Hau-Yoon made a concept video, then developed a rough prototype with colleagues. The prototype reached an audience and helped persuade Free Lives founder Evan Greenwood to support the project.
