Share only the information a specific government service needs for the task, and submit it through a channel you reach independently from the agency’s official website or authenticated account. Do not reply to an unexpected or unverified email with a password, Social Security number (SSN), Social Insurance Number (SIN), financial details, or identity documents. A real agency may need identifying information for an application or identity check; a government logo or sender name alone does not prove a message is genuine.
What information is appropriate to share?
It depends on the service and the task. An application may require information about your circumstances, while an account setup may require identity evidence. Follow the instructions on the service’s genuine official website or authenticated account—not a request whose legitimacy you have not confirmed.

What should you never send by email?
Do not send sensitive information in response to an unsolicited or unverified email. In particular, do not email:
- Passwords or account sign-in codes.
- Your SSN or SIN.
- Bank, credit-card, or payment details.
- Scans or photographs of identity documents.
The specific agency policies cited here differ in scope, but each points toward the same safe practice. The SSA says, “We suggest that you do not send personal information to us via email, because it is not a secure method of communication.” SSA Internet Privacy Policy

Where should you submit information or documents?
- Start from a source you trust. Type the agency’s known web address yourself or use a trusted bookmark. Avoid starting from a link in an unexpected message.
- Sign in through the official service. Complete the task in the agency’s authenticated account or official application process. The SSA describes accessing my Social Security through Login.gov or ID.me; USAJOBS directs users to USAJOBS.gov for account changes. SSA account access guidance USAJOBS email guidance
- Confirm any alternate method. If the agency instructs you to submit a document another way, verify that method using a phone number or contact form found independently on the agency’s official website.
- Check the connection and destination. Do not assume an email display name, logo, caller ID, or visible link text proves authenticity. The SSA advises checking a link’s actual destination and cautions against clicking or replying when unsure. Service Canada specifically warns against sending a SIN over an unsecured digital channel. How can you tell if a government message is suspicious?
Treat an unexpected message cautiously if it asks for personal information or money, pressures you to act immediately, threatens consequences, or urges you to open an attachment or follow a link. The SSA lists these tactics among the ways scammers impersonate the agency. SSA guidance on Social Security scams
- Do not click the message’s links or open its attachments.
- Do not reply with personal information or payment.
- Leave the message and find the agency’s official website yourself.
- Use the agency’s published contact route to ask whether it sent the request.
Service Canada advises contacting the organization directly when you are unsure whether it contacted you. A sender address by itself is not conclusive proof: the SSA lists addresses it uses and notes that some outreach may involve a marketing firm. If you are uncertain, check the destination of any link without opening it and verify the request through a contact route you found independently. What if you already sent information?
Stop interacting through the questionable message. Contact the agency using its official website or a contact channel you independently verify. If you shared an account password, sign in through the official service, change it, and follow that service’s security instructions.
