Biosensor companies can collect far more than the number shown on a screen. A ring, glucose system, watch sensor or companion app may generate physiological readings, calculate health-related scores, combine those results with account and device details, and accept information you enter or import. Companies say they use the resulting data to operate the service, produce personalized insights, provide support, improve products, develop features, and connect with other services.
The exact answer depends on the product, country, account relationship, integrations and legal setting. A direct-to-consumer health ring is not treated the same way as a sensor supplied through a clinician, and a permission you grant to an app can send data to a recipient governed by that recipient’s own policy.

What counts as biosensor data?
“Biosensor data” usually starts with a physical measurement, but companies may process several layers of information around it. The most obvious layer is a raw or near-raw reading: glucose, heart rate, heart-rate variability, temperature, movement, sleep signals, oxygen-related measurements, or another physiological value produced by a sensor. The device may transmit those readings to a phone or cloud service for storage and analysis.

The next layer is calculated information. Software can turn multiple readings into a score, trend, alert or interpretation. Oura describes personalized readiness, sleep and activity insights and health-status inferences. Abbott’s consumer-health policy explicitly includes health information inferred or derived by algorithms or machine learning. In practical terms, a company may therefore hold both “heart-rate readings” and a conclusion such as a change in recovery, sleep quality or another aspect of health.

Account, device and app information
Sensor records are commonly associated with an account. Dexcom’s policy lists identity and contact details, demographic information, technical data, audio or video, commercial or financial information, professional or educational information, health information and de-identified information among possible categories. Technical information can include details needed to connect an app, device or service, while app activity can show how features are used.
Information you enter or import
Users can add context that a sensor cannot measure by itself. Depending on the service, this may include notes, food or nutrition records, hydration, exercise, medication-related information, weight, symptoms or profile details. A company may also receive information from a connected device, another profile or a partner when you authorize that connection. Abbott says information can come from users through services, events, programs, clinical trials or customer service, or from another source such as a connected device or profile when permission is provided.
How companies use the information
Running the requested service
The first purpose is operational: receive measurements, display them, calculate requested results, synchronize devices, send alerts and keep an account working. Apple’s consumer health personal-data policy says it may use covered information as reasonably necessary to provide requested products and features, communicate with users, or comply with law. That language covers the basic functions a user expects after enabling a health feature.

Personalized insights and health-related inferences
Personalization requires combining readings over time and comparing them with information in the account or app. Oura says it processes data to provide readiness, sleep and activity insights and inferences about health status. These are not necessarily diagnoses; they are software-generated interpretations intended to help a user understand patterns or make use of a feature. Because an inference can reveal a condition or change in health even when no one entered that condition directly, it deserves the same care as a raw measurement.
Customer support, security and troubleshooting
Companies may need account, device and usage information to answer a support request, investigate a failed synchronization, maintain an integration or protect the service. Oura lists customer support among its purposes. Technical and account records can be relevant even when the support agent does not need to inspect every underlying sensor value.
Product improvement, analytics and new features
Oura also lists service improvement and analysis, alongside marketing, among its processing purposes. In a general policy, “improvement” can cover evaluating reliability, understanding feature use and developing or refining software. Policies may separately describe analytics, artificial-intelligence development or research; the wording and permitted uses differ by company and product, so a reader should look for those terms rather than assume that every service uses data in the same way.

Communications and marketing
Some policies list marketing or communications as a purpose. That does not by itself establish that every health reading is used for an advertisement, but it means the policy should be checked for the kinds of messages, consent choices and opt-outs that apply to the account. Apple’s policy describes communication as a permitted use for consumer health personal data when reasonably necessary in the stated context.

What four major policy examples show
The following comparison uses each company’s stated policy context. It is not an industry-wide measurement or an audit of how every product operates.
| Company and policy context | Information categories described | Stated uses or disclosures | Controls or legal notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oura ring, app, Membership Hub and related services | Information supplied by users, produced from that information, or received from partners; sensor-derived insights about readiness, sleep, activity and health status; account and service data | Personalized insights, customer support, service improvement, analysis, marketing and integrations | Oura says it does not sell or rent personal information; sensitive personal data is processed with consent in the cases described by its policy. It says it is generally not a HIPAA covered entity for direct-to-consumer services. |
| Dexcom services and optional integrations | Identity/contact, demographic, technical, audio/video, health, commercial/financial, professional/educational and de-identified categories; data from connected services | Operation of the service and optional integrations described in its policy; disclosures depend on the user’s relationship and selected features | Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect use is voluntary and authorization can be changed or revoked. Dexcom says Health Connect data is subject to Google’s Limited Use requirements and will not be sold to third parties. |
| Abbott US consumer-health services | Conditions, treatment, diagnoses, interventions, medication use or acquisition, bodily functions, vital signs, symptoms, reproductive or sexual health, biometrics, precise location indicating an attempt to obtain health services, and algorithmic or machine-learning inferences | Processing connected to services, programs, events, clinical trials and customer service, including information supplied by a user or permitted source | The policy describes rights to confirm, access or obtain a copy, amend, delete or withdraw consent, subject to applicable exceptions. |
| Apple consumer health personal data | Conditions, symptoms, diagnoses, testing or treatment; bodily-function or vital-sign measurements; information indicating an attempt to seek health care; and information that can infer or detect health status | Requested products and features, communication, legal compliance; disclosure to affiliates, service providers, feature providers, user-selected recipients or where law requires | Apple describes minimization, on-device processing, transparency, control and security. Its policy was updated March 31, 2024, and says Apple does not sell consumer health personal data. |
When integrations and sharing are involved
An integration creates a second data relationship. The original sensor company may send information to a health app, cloud platform, employer, clinician, research program or another service after you enable a connection. The receiving organization may then apply its own privacy policy, retention schedule and legal obligations.

Oura integrations
Oura describes integrations with services such as Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect. It says integrations occur when users choose them or provide the consent needed for the connection. Oura’s policy also states: “Oura does not sell or rent your personal information, and only shares your personal data with certain trusted service providers and partners so that we can provide and improve our services, to provide partner services and other offerings, and to operate our business.” If a user directs Oura to transfer data to a third party, Oura says that third party’s practices govern the data after the transfer.
Dexcom integrations
Dexcom names optional Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect integrations. The examples of data that may be involved include nutrition or food-diary entries, hydration, sleep, heart rate and variability, body temperature, activity, exercise, calories burned, weight and body mass. The policy says use is voluntary and authorization can be changed or revoked. Revoking access stops a future permission, but it does not automatically tell the receiving service to erase copies it already obtained; deletion must be checked with each service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsService providers and affiliates
Policies can authorize cloud providers, affiliates and other contractors to process information for the company. Apple says it may disclose consumer health personal data to affiliates, service providers, other parties needed to provide a requested feature, recipients selected by the user, or when law requires. A disclosure to a service provider acting for the company is different from an optional transfer that the user directs to an independent app, so read the policy’s definitions and recipient categories carefully.
Best Value
Does HIPAA protect data from a ring or sensor?
HIPAA coverage depends on who is handling the information and why, not simply on whether a device measures health. A direct-to-consumer service may be outside HIPAA even though it contains sensitive health information.
Oura’s stated direct-to-consumer position
Oura says it is generally not a HIPAA covered entity for direct-to-consumer services. It also says that when a user directs a covered entity or business associate to share records with Oura through a patient-directed disclosure or HIPAA authorization, those records no longer fall under HIPAA while in Oura’s possession. This is Oura’s stated position for the contexts described in its policy, not a rule that applies to every health-ring company.
Dexcom’s separate notices
Dexcom identifies different notices for US patient protected health information and for consumer health data. Its Washington and Nevada notice says it does not cover certain HIPAA-governed information processed through specified products when those products are provided through a provider and reimbursed by US insurance. That notice defines consumer health data by reference to information linked or reasonably linkable to a person that identifies past, present or future physical or mental health status. Its scope is limited to the laws and products addressed there.
Other legal and jurisdictional differences
State, national and sector-specific laws can provide rights or obligations that differ from a company’s general policy. Apple describes rights to know, access, correct, transfer, restrict processing and delete personal data, with controls in the Health app. Abbott describes access, copies, amendment, deletion and withdrawal of consent, subject to exceptions. The right available to a particular person can depend on residence, product, account type, consent and the company’s legal role.
How to evaluate a biosensor privacy policy
- Identify the exact product and relationship. Use the policy linked from the specific device, app or service, and determine whether the account is direct-to-consumer, clinician supplied, employer sponsored or reimbursed through insurance.
- List every input, not only the sensor. Look for raw readings, derived scores, health inferences, profile fields, notes, imported records, location, device identifiers, app activity and information from partners.
- Separate purposes. Mark language about providing features, personalization, support, analytics, product improvement, artificial intelligence, research, marketing and legal compliance. A broad “improve services” clause is not identical to a specific research or advertising permission.
- Map every recipient. Check cloud providers, affiliates, contractors, health apps, user-selected partners, employers, providers and legally compelled disclosures. Note which transfers are optional and which are needed for the service to function.
- Inspect the controls. Find consent settings, integration permissions, export or access tools, correction procedures and deletion or withdrawal options. Check whether revocation affects future collection only and whether exceptions apply.
- Record the policy date and jurisdiction. Policies change, and a US notice may not describe the rights or recipients that apply elsewhere. Recheck the current policy before enabling a new integration or feature.
Practical ways to reduce unnecessary exposure
- Enable only the sensors and integrations needed for the feature you actually use.
- Review Health app or device permissions after an app update, since a new connection can add new categories of information.
- Use the company’s access, export, correction or deletion process when you no longer need an account, and make a separate request to any receiving service that stored a copy.
- Read whether sensitive information is processed only with consent, and withdraw that consent when the feature is no longer useful.
- Keep screenshots or records of important permission choices and the policy version that applied when you made them.
What the policies do not establish
Company privacy policies are first-party descriptions, not independent audits or proof that every implementation matches the wording. The policies reviewed for these examples do not provide a comparable, industry-wide statistic showing how much data each biosensor company collects or how often it shares it. They also do not make one company’s promises a universal rule for all wearables, glucose systems or health apps.
The most reliable answer is therefore product-specific: identify the exact sensor and account, read the applicable policy for your country, inspect the permissions for each integration, and distinguish a measured value from an inference created by software. That process reveals what the company can collect, why it says it uses the information, who may receive it and which controls are available to you.
