In medicine, that makes them a platform for disease modeling and for developing cell-replacement and immune-cell therapies—not a guarantee that a treatment is safe, effective, approved, or available.
Clinical studies are testing pluripotent-stem-cell-derived products, but the evidence summarized here does not identify an approved iPSC-derived treatment. The exact product, disease, country and regulatory status always matter.

What induced pluripotent stem cells are
Researchers make an iPSC by taking a mature cell—often from an adult donor—and reprogramming it so it behaves like a pluripotent stem cell. “Pluripotent” means the cell can, under controlled laboratory conditions, be directed toward many specialized cell types. It is not the same as saying the cell can automatically become any tissue in a patient or repair any disease.
The practical value is that a single collected cell sample can become a starting material for laboratory models or a manufactured cell product. The difficult part is controlling every step: reprogramming, expansion, differentiation into the intended cell type, removal of unwanted cells, quality testing, dosing and monitoring after transplantation.

What iPSCs may be used for in medicine
Disease modeling with patient-derived cells
Scientists can create iPSCs from a person with a disease and direct them into a relevant cell type. Those cells can be used to investigate disease biology, test hypotheses and observe cellular features that may be inaccessible in a living patient. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes this disease-modeling potential in its overview of therapeutic approaches involving genome editing and stem-cell technologies.
A model is an experimental representation, not a treatment. A dish of patient-derived neurons, heart cells or other specialized cells can reveal mechanisms or support laboratory testing, but it does not prove that transplanting those cells will help the person from whom they came.
Cell-replacement and tissue-support products
Another goal is to differentiate iPSCs into cells intended to replace or support cells damaged by disease or injury. The concept could apply to many tissues, but each candidate requires its own evidence that the manufactured cells have the right identity, function, purity, dose and delivery method.

ISSCR guidance stresses that a clinical product must be evaluated for identity, quality, safety and effectiveness. Producing a cell type associated with a disease is therefore only an early technical milestone. It does not establish that the cells will survive, connect correctly, work for the required duration or avoid harmful effects.
Engineered immune-cell therapies
iPSCs can also be directed toward immune-cell types for possible cancer or autoimmune applications. This is a development area rather than a general treatment category. Investigators must show that the cells perform the intended immune function, remain controllable after administration and do not create unacceptable immune or tumor risks.
Research and development decisions
Across these uses, iPSCs serve as a renewable starting platform. A laboratory can compare cell lines, differentiation methods and manufacturing controls while studying a specific disease. That flexibility can accelerate development, but it also creates many opportunities for variation between products. Results from one line or process cannot automatically be transferred to another.

How an iPSC-based therapy would move toward clinical use
- Collect and reprogram cells. Adult cells are obtained from a donor and converted to iPSCs. The resulting line must be characterized and checked for abnormalities relevant to the intended use.
- Expand a controlled cell bank. Manufacturers grow cells under defined conditions and preserve a bank from which batches can be made. Consistency between batches is a regulatory and safety requirement, not an optional laboratory detail.
- Differentiate the cells. Signals and culture conditions are used to produce the target cell type. Differentiation is rarely perfect, so the process must measure both the desired cells and unwanted populations.
- Purify and test the product. Testing can include identity, viability, potency, sterility, genetic stability and residual undifferentiated-cell assessments. The exact release tests depend on the product and route of administration.
- Generate preclinical evidence. Developers study function, distribution and toxicity before exposing people to the product. Animal or laboratory findings cannot guarantee human benefit, but regulators use them to assess whether a first-in-human study is justified.
- Run an authorized clinical trial. An independently reviewed protocol specifies eligibility, dose, delivery, outcome measures, adverse-event monitoring and follow-up. Early trials generally focus on feasibility and safety rather than proving comparative effectiveness.
- Seek regulatory authorization for routine use. Approval requires substantial evidence appropriate to the jurisdiction and product. If authorization is granted, post-approval safety and effectiveness monitoring remains important because transplanted cells can have long-lasting effects.
What the current clinical numbers do—and do not—show
A 2025 update by Kirkeby, Main and Carpenter in Cell Stem Cell reported the landscape through December 2024. The authors counted 116 clinical trials and 83 products with regulatory approval to enter clinical testing, and reported that more than 1,200 patients had received products. These figures cover human pluripotent-stem-cell-derived therapies collectively, including products derived from embryonic stem cells as well as iPSCs; they are not iPSC-only totals.
| Reported figure | Scope and cutoff | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 116 clinical trials | Human pluripotent-stem-cell-derived products; data through December 2024 | Investigational activity had reached this number of authorized trials; it is not a count of successful treatments. |
| 83 products | Human pluripotent-stem-cell-derived products with regulatory approval to enter trials; same cutoff | Different candidates were permitted to be studied in people; permission to test is not marketing approval. |
| More than 1,200 patients dosed | Participants receiving human pluripotent-stem-cell-derived products; same cutoff | Shows clinical exposure, not proof of meaningful benefit or lifetime safety. |
Most trials in that review targeted the eye, central nervous system or cancer. The cited abstract does not provide disease-by-disease comparative efficacy results, so the totals cannot be used to rank conditions, products or companies. They also should not be presented as a current 2026 inventory without checking newer regulatory records.
Are iPSC treatments approved?
Approval is jurisdiction-specific and applies to a named product, indication, manufacturing process, dose and route of administration. A trial authorization means regulators have allowed investigators to test a product under a protocol. It does not mean the product is approved for routine care, and participation does not guarantee benefit or eventual approval.

In its U.S. consumer information, the FDA identifies approved stem-cell products as blood-forming progenitor cells derived from umbilical cord blood for disorders affecting blood production. That statement describes the U.S. context and does not establish approval of an iPSC-derived therapy. The sources summarized here do not identify an approved iPSC treatment; anyone considering a named product should verify its current status with the relevant regulator in the country where care would occur.
ISSCR’s patient guidance separates interventions into approved treatments, investigational treatments in compliant clinical trials and unproven interventions. A clinic’s use of the phrase “stem cell therapy” does not reveal which category applies.
What iPSCs cannot be assumed to do
- They cannot be assumed to cure a disease. The ability to make a disease-relevant cell type does not show that transplantation will reverse the disease or improve survival, function or quality of life.
- They cannot be assumed to be safe because they came from the patient. Autologous starting material may reduce some immune-matching issues, but reprogramming, expansion, differentiation and transplantation still introduce biological and manufacturing risks.
- They cannot be assumed to work across products. Evidence for one cell line, process, dose or delivery route does not transfer automatically to another candidate.
- They cannot be assumed to be routine care because a trial exists. A listing on a trial registry or an early human study establishes neither meaningful benefit nor long-term safety.
- They cannot be assumed to be legitimate because a commercial clinic offers them. FDA warnings about illegally marketed regenerative-medicine products include reports of blindness, tumors, neurological events, infections, immune reactions and unintended cell growth or migration. Those warnings concern illegally marketed products generally; they do not show that every harm occurs in every iPSC trial.
Why manufacturing and biological safety are central problems
Unwanted or incompletely differentiated cells
Reprogramming and differentiation can leave cells that are immature, incorrectly specified or still pluripotent. If such cells are transplanted, they may multiply inappropriately or form tumors. A release test must therefore demonstrate more than the presence of the desired marker; it must address contaminating populations and the product’s functional behavior.
Best Value
Growth, migration and integration
ISSCR identifies potential risks including tumorigenesis, hyperplasia, migration, off-target effects and inappropriate integration. A cell that moves beyond the intended site, connects incorrectly or remains active after it should stop may cause harm even if the initial procedure appears successful.
Immune and inflammatory effects
Cells may trigger immune reactions, whether the source is autologous or allogeneic. The delivery vehicle, surrounding tissue, genetic changes and the cells’ maturation state can all influence that response. Immunosuppression may introduce additional risks and does not solve every compatibility problem.
Long-term uncertainty
Transplanted cells can persist and have durable biological effects. Short follow-up in an early trial cannot establish lifetime safety. Long-term monitoring is therefore relevant to both investigational studies and any eventual approved use.

How to judge a proposed iPSC trial or clinic claim
- Identify the exact intervention. Ask for the cell source, target cell type, genetic modifications, dose, delivery route and whether the product is made from your cells or a donor bank.
- Check the regulatory category in your country. Confirm whether the product is approved for the exact condition or is being studied in an authorized clinical trial. “Registered,” “available under a special program” and “approved” are not interchangeable terms.
- Read the protocol, not just the headline. Look for the trial phase, enrollment status, inclusion criteria, comparator, primary outcome and planned follow-up. A small uncontrolled safety study cannot answer the same question as a randomized effectiveness trial.
- Review evidence for this product. Check published results, adverse events, manufacturing controls and the duration of observation. Do not substitute evidence from a different cell line or disease.
- Understand costs and responsibilities. Ask who pays for the intervention, treatment of complications, travel, follow-up visits and long-term monitoring. Payment to participate does not make an intervention approved.
- Seek independent medical advice. A specialist who is not selling the intervention can help compare the proposed study with established care and identify conflicts of interest.
Questions worth asking before enrollment
- What regulator and ethics committee reviewed this protocol?
- What is the trial’s phase, registration number and current recruitment status?
- What evidence shows that the cells are the intended type and free of dangerous residual cells?
- What are the known and foreseeable risks, including tumor formation, immune reactions, migration and the need for additional procedures?
- How long will participants be followed, and who provides care if a delayed complication appears?
- What happens if the product does not work, the trial stops or the sponsor closes?
- Will participation replace an established treatment, and is that change medically justified?
The practical distinction to remember
iPSCs are powerful because they connect a patient’s biology to laboratory models and offer a route to manufacturing specialized cells. Their promise is real, but the promise belongs to a technology platform. A specific therapy still has to demonstrate controlled manufacturing, an acceptable safety profile and clinically meaningful benefit through the regulatory process that applies in the patient’s jurisdiction.
