The Canon EOS R6 Mark II’s in-body image stabilization (IBIS) moves the camera’s imaging sensor to counteract your hand movement. That can reduce blur caused by camera shake in still photographs, including when the lens has no optical stabilizer.
IBIS does not freeze a person, animal, vehicle or any other moving subject. For video, Canon’s Movie Digital IS is a separate electronic option: it can add correction, but it also magnifies the image and narrows the view. Canon rates the R6 Mark II’s in-body system at up to 8.0 stops; that is a maximum rating, not a promise that every handheld frame will be sharp.

How the R6 Mark II’s sensor stabilization works
During a handheld exposure, your camera can rotate or shift slightly. That movement makes the projected image slide across the sensor while the shutter is open, producing camera-shake blur. The R6 Mark II detects that movement and shifts its sensor in the opposite direction to keep the image more stable during the exposure. Canon describes this as a five-axis in-body system that compensates at the sensor rather than requiring a stabilized lens. Canon’s explanation of camera-shake compensation describes the movement types and the corresponding corrections.

| Camera movement | What it means in practice | How the body responds |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal angular movement | The camera rotates left or right. | The sensor shifts to counter the rotation. |
| Vertical angular movement | The camera rotates up or down. | The sensor counters the change in angle. |
| Roll | The camera twists around the center of the lens. | The stabilization system corrects that rotational movement. |
| Horizontal shift | The camera moves sideways in parallel with the subject. | The sensor compensates for the lateral displacement. |
| Vertical shift | The camera moves up or down in parallel with the subject. | The sensor compensates for the vertical displacement. |
These corrections are intended for movement of the camera. They do not alter the subject itself, and they cannot make a moving subject stationary.
Does IBIS work with a lens that has no IS?
Yes. For still photography, the R6 Mark II can use in-body IS with a lens that has no optical image-stabilization mechanism. Canon’s support information specifically lists still-photo in-body IS with non-IS lenses. The lens does not have to contain its own stabilizer for the sensor to move.
That makes IBIS useful with compatible unstabilized lenses, including lenses whose focal lengths or designs predate Canon’s optical-IS options. The camera is compensating at the body, so changing to a non-IS lens does not automatically remove still-photo stabilization. The exact amount of useful correction still depends on the exposure, focal length, direction and magnitude of your movement, and how steadily you hold the camera.
What happens when the lens has optical IS?
Compatible RF and RF-S lenses with optical IS can work with the R6 Mark II’s sensor system in coordinated IS. The lens and body share stabilization duties: optical elements in the lens correct some movement while the camera shifts the sensor for other movement. Canon describes this as coordinated control rather than two unrelated systems operating independently. See Canon’s Coordinated Control IS explanation for the manufacturer’s description of that relationship.

Do not add a lens’s advertised stop figure to the camera’s figure as if they were independent bonuses. The combined result is a coordinated system rating, and the available correction varies with the particular lens, focal length, movement and shooting conditions. Canon’s model information says the R6 Mark II provides up to 8.0 stops of IS; it does not say that every lens and every photographer receives eight stops in every situation.
| Still-photo setup | Stabilization behavior | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Non-IS lens | The camera can use sensor-shift IBIS. | Optical IS in the lens is not a prerequisite for still-photo IBIS. |
| Compatible RF/RF-S lens with optical IS | Lens and body can coordinate their corrections. | Use the coordinated system; do not sum separate stop ratings. |
What “up to 8.0 stops” means
The Canon Camera Museum’s EOS R6 Mark II entry states: “In addition, the camera features a 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) that delivers 8.0 stops of IS.” Canon Camera Museum, EOS R6 Mark II is the manufacturer source for that model-specific figure, accessed 2026.
A stop is a doubling or halving of exposure time, but the quoted number should not be converted into a guaranteed handheld shutter speed. “Up to” identifies a maximum under specified evaluation conditions, not a universal result. The reviewed Canon material does not establish one field result for every lens, focal length, movement direction or user. Your own motion may exceed what the system can correct, and a subject can move while the camera remains steady.

Camera shake is different from subject movement
IBIS addresses movement of the camera. It does not freeze movement in the scene. If you photograph a stationary building while your hands move, sensor stabilization can reduce the resulting camera-shake blur. If you photograph a running child, a bird taking off or a passing car, the subject can still smear because it changes position during the exposure.
| Blur source | Can IBIS correct it? | What may be needed instead |
|---|---|---|
| Your hands rotate or shift the camera. | Yes, within the system’s operating range. | Hold the camera steadily and choose an exposure that suits the scene. |
| The subject moves during the exposure. | No. The subject’s motion is independent of camera shake. | A faster shutter speed or another way of controlling subject movement. |
| Both camera and subject move. | Only the camera component is addressed. | Control subject motion separately while using stabilization for your own movement. |
This distinction explains why a stabilized photograph can still show a soft face, wing or wheel. The background may be steadier while the moving subject remains blurred. Stabilization also cannot guarantee a sharp result when handling, focal length, exposure time or movement exceeds the conditions in which the system can compensate.
Is Movie Digital IS the same as IBIS?
No. Movie Digital IS is a separate video setting, not another name for the R6 Mark II’s sensor-shift IBIS. Canon’s manual provides On and Enhanced Movie Digital IS options. Digital processing analyzes successive video frames and applies additional correction, but it does so by magnifying the image. The resulting field of view is narrower than the uncropped view.

Canon also notes that Movie Digital IS effectiveness varies with recording size and angle of view. A setting that looks acceptable at one focal length or resolution may produce a different amount of correction or a different crop at another. Because the view is magnified, check the framing after enabling it rather than assuming the composition will stay unchanged.

Movie Digital IS is intended for situations where extra electronic correction is useful, such as handheld recording. It is not a substitute for controlling subject movement, and it does not turn a moving subject into a static one. If the camera is already locked down, extra digital correction is generally unnecessary. Canon’s manual says: “When using a tripod, setting Movie Digital IS to [Off] is recommended.” Read the EOS R6 Mark II Image Stabilizer (IS Mode) manual section for the camera’s model-specific options and cautions.
Choosing stabilization for common shooting situations
Handheld still photo with a non-IS lens
- Mount the lens and compose the photograph.
- Make sure still-photo IS is enabled in the camera’s stabilization controls.
- Take the photograph while supporting the camera as steadily as possible.
- Review the image at the required output size; do not judge success from the maximum 8.0-stop claim alone.
The key point is that the lens’s lack of optical IS does not prevent the body from providing sensor-shift correction.
Handheld still photo with a compatible optical-IS lens
- Confirm that the lens is a compatible RF or RF-S model with optical IS.
- Use the lens and camera stabilization system as a coordinated pair.
- Avoid treating the body and lens specifications as additive stop values.
- Increase shutter speed if the subject is moving; coordinated IS only addresses your camera movement.
Handheld video
- Decide whether the unprocessed view is steady enough for the shot.
- If additional electronic correction is needed, select Movie Digital IS and choose either On or Enhanced as appropriate.
- Check the resulting crop and framing, because Movie Digital IS magnifies the image.
- Evaluate the setting at the chosen recording size and angle of view; Canon says effectiveness varies with both.
Video from a tripod
- Secure the camera and compose the locked-off shot.
- Set Movie Digital IS to Off, following Canon’s tripod recommendation.
- Check that the tripod, head and camera controls are not being disturbed during recording.
Common misconceptions and troubleshooting
“Eight stops means any night photograph will be sharp.”
The rating is a maximum, not a universal guarantee. A long exposure can still be affected by your handling, the lens and focal length, or movement that exceeds the correction range. Test the actual shutter speed and inspect the files rather than relying on the headline number.
“A stabilized lens is required.”
Not for still-photo IBIS. The R6 Mark II can select in-body IS with a non-IS lens. A compatible optical-IS lens can add coordinated correction, but it is not a prerequisite for the body’s sensor-shift system.

“IBIS will stop a moving person from blurring.”
It will not. Stabilization follows camera movement, while the person continues moving through the frame. Use an exposure appropriate for the subject’s motion and regard IBIS as help for your own hand movement.
“Movie Digital IS is just the video name for IBIS.”
It is a separate electronic video option with On and Enhanced settings. Its correction can narrow the field of view through magnification, and its effectiveness depends on recording size and angle of view.
“Turning every stabilization option on is always best.”
Choose according to the setup. For handheld video, Movie Digital IS may be useful when its crop is acceptable. For tripod video, Canon recommends turning it off. For stills, use the body’s IS with a non-IS lens or the coordinated body-and-lens system with a compatible optical-IS lens.

The practical verdict
On the EOS R6 Mark II, IBIS is a sensor-shift system designed to reduce blur from camera shake across five axes. It works for still photographs with a non-IS lens, and it can coordinate with optical IS in compatible RF and RF-S lenses. Canon’s “up to 8.0 stops” figure describes the system’s maximum rated capability, not a guaranteed result for every exposure.
Movie Digital IS should be considered separately: it is an electronic video correction that can magnify and crop the view, with effectiveness that changes by recording size and angle of view. Whether you are shooting stills or video, stabilization helps with movement of the camera—not movement of the subject—and it cannot guarantee sharpness in every handheld image or clip.
