Implied volatility (IV) is the volatility percentage that an option-pricing model must use to match an option’s current market price. It measures how much movement traders are pricing in over the contract’s remaining life, in either direction—not whether the stock is expected to rise or fall. Higher IV generally makes both calls and puts more expensive; IV can also collapse after a scheduled event such as earnings.
What implied volatility actually measures
Implied volatility is inferred, not directly observed. An option quote gives you a market premium. A pricing model then uses that premium, along with the stock price, strike, time to expiration, interest rates, dividends and other contract details, to solve for the volatility input that makes the model’s value match the traded price. The resulting percentage is the option’s implied volatility.

The Options Industry Council defines it as “the market’s prediction of expected volatility, calculated indirectly from current options prices using an option-pricing model.” That wording is important: IV is a market-implied expectation, not a guarantee and not a direct measurement of what the stock will do.

An annualized IV of 40%, for example, does not mean the stock will move exactly 40% by expiration. It does not specify a direction, a sequence of daily moves, or the largest possible gain or loss. It is a model-based description of the amount of uncertainty embedded in that particular option quote and time horizon.

IV belongs to a contract, not to a stock in isolation
There is no single permanent IV for a company. Calls and puts with different strikes or expiration dates can have different implied volatilities at the same moment. A quote from a wide bid–ask spread, a thinly traded strike or a stale market can also produce a less reliable inference than a liquid, actively updated quote.
How an option price turns into IV
Option models calculate a theoretical premium from several inputs. The market supplies the premium; the model solves backward for volatility. Because each input affects the result, changing any of them can change the IV backed out of the same option price.
| Input | Why it matters to the premium and IV |
|---|---|
| Underlying stock price | Changes the option’s intrinsic and time value and its distance from the strike. |
| Strike price | Determines the contract’s moneyness and the probability that it finishes with value. |
| Time to expiration | Provides more or less time for a move to occur; the remaining term is part of the IV calculation. |
| Interest rates | Influence the present value of the strike and therefore theoretical option value. |
| Dividends | Expected distributions can alter the forward value of the stock and option pricing. |
| Market premium | The observed bid, ask or transaction price that the model is trying to reproduce. |
| Volatility input | The unknown value solved for when the other inputs and the market premium are supplied. |
In practice, the IV shown by a quote service depends on whether it uses the bid, ask, midpoint or last trade, as well as on its pricing conventions. Read the number alongside the contract’s quote quality and terms rather than treating it as a free-standing property of the ticker.
Does implied volatility predict whether a stock will rise or fall?
No. IV signals expected magnitude of movement, not direction. A higher reading means the market is assigning more value to the possibility of a substantial move either upward or downward. Calls and puts can both carry high IV because both may become more valuable when uncertainty increases.
Directional information comes from other parts of the market, such as the stock price, the relationship between call and put demand, or a trader’s own analysis. Even those signals are uncertain. IV by itself cannot tell you that a rally, sell-off or particular price target is expected.

What a high or low reading can and cannot say
- It can say: the option premium reflects more or less anticipated fluctuation for that strike and expiration than another contract, period or comparison point.
- It cannot say: which direction the move will take, when it will occur, or whether the option will be profitable for a buyer.
- It cannot guarantee: that realized volatility will match the implied figure. Actual price movement may be greater or smaller.
How IV changes call and put premiums
All else equal, increasing IV raises the theoretical value of both calls and puts. Greater possible movement increases the chance that an option will finish far enough in the money to have value, and it increases the time value embedded in the premium. Decreasing IV generally has the opposite effect.
This relationship applies even when the stock has not moved. An option buyer can therefore lose money from a decline in IV, while an option seller can benefit from that decline, provided other influences do not offset it. The actual premium also changes with the underlying price, time passing, rates, dividends, supply and demand, and the option’s strike and expiration.

Suppose a trader buys a call before an announcement because they expect the stock to rise. If the stock rises only modestly, the fall in IV after the announcement and the loss of time value can outweigh the gain from the stock move. The result is a lower option price even though the direction was right. A put buyer faces the same issue when a stock falls but IV contracts enough to reduce the premium.
Implied volatility versus historical and realized volatility
Historical volatility summarizes observed past price changes over a selected look-back period. Realized volatility describes the movement that actually occurs during a future or completed interval. Implied volatility is inferred from today’s option prices and looks forward over the option’s remaining life.
| Measure | Built from | What it describes | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Historical volatility | Past stock-price returns | How much the stock moved during the chosen historical window | Past behavior may not represent upcoming conditions. |
| Implied volatility | Current option premium and a pricing model | The movement market prices for a specific strike and expiration | It is model-dependent and may differ from future realized movement. |
| Realized volatility | Price changes that actually occur | The movement delivered over a period | It is known only after the period unfolds and cannot be observed in advance. |
Comparing IV with a stock’s own historical readings can show whether current option pricing is unusual for that underlying, but it does not establish that the option is cheap or expensive. A high IV may reflect a genuine upcoming risk; a low IV may still be too high if the stock later moves more than priced.

Why IV varies by strike and expiration
Open an option chain and you will often see different IVs across strikes and maturities. The pattern across strikes is commonly called skew or a volatility smile. It reflects differences in demand, perceived tail risk, liquidity and the market’s willingness to pay for protection or leverage at particular strikes.
The pattern across expiration dates is the volatility term structure. IV can rise into a scheduled event, flatten, or fall for later maturities depending on how the market distributes risk through time. Because of these patterns, quoting “the stock’s IV” without naming a strike and expiration hides important information.
Use like-for-like comparisons
- Match the same underlying security.
- Match expiration dates or compare contracts with the same remaining time horizon.
- Match strikes or compare equivalent moneyness, such as at-the-money contracts.
- Check whether an earnings release, product decision, court ruling or other known event falls inside one contract’s life but not the other’s.
- Review bid–ask spreads and trading activity before treating small IV differences as meaningful.
What happens to IV around earnings and other events?
Before a scheduled event, traders may pay more for options because a sharp move is possible and the outcome is uncertain. That demand can lift IV in expirations that include the event. Once the announcement passes, the specific uncertainty is no longer ahead, so the extra event premium can come out of option prices. This rapid decline is commonly called an “IV crush.”
IV crush can reduce a call or put’s value immediately after earnings, even if the stock moves in the anticipated direction. The final result depends on the size and direction of the stock move, the contract’s strike and expiration, time decay and the amount by which IV changes. A move smaller than the one already priced into the premium may be insufficient for a long option to profit.
A practical pre- and post-event checklist
- Identify the event date and whether it occurs before expiration.
- Compare IV in an expiration that includes the event with a nearby expiration that does not.
- Ask what stock move would be required to overcome the premium paid; do not assume the event itself guarantees a large move.
- After the event, separate the effect of the stock move from the effect of the IV change and ordinary time decay.
How to tell whether IV is high or low
There is no universal percentage at which IV becomes “high” or “low.” A reading that is elevated for a stable company may be normal for a biotech stock or a company approaching earnings. Evaluate IV relative to the same underlying, similar contract terms and the risk the market is currently pricing.

| Question | Useful comparison | What it helps you assess |
|---|---|---|
| Is this strike unusual today? | Other strikes with the same expiration | Skew, smile and strike-specific demand. |
| Is this maturity unusual? | Other expirations at comparable moneyness | Term structure and event exposure. |
| Is IV elevated for this stock? | The underlying’s own historical IV readings, using comparable contracts | Whether current uncertainty is high or low for that ticker. |
| Is the premium attractive? | IV, premium, spread, time value and the expected event or risk together | Whether the price fits your thesis; IV alone cannot determine value. |
Use a consistent comparison. Comparing a short-dated, out-of-the-money put with a long-dated, at-the-money call can produce a dramatic IV difference that says more about the contracts than about a change in the stock’s overall risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.VIX is not the IV of an individual stock
The Cboe describes the VIX Index as an up-to-the-minute market estimate of expected 30-day volatility for the S&P 500, calculated from the midpoint of real-time S&P 500 Index (SPX) option bid and ask quotes. Its calculation combines option information across strikes and uses expirations to create a constant 30-day measure.
That makes VIX a broad index measure, not the implied volatility of a particular company’s option. An individual stock can have much higher or lower IV because of company-specific earnings, litigation, financing, takeover speculation, liquidity or other risks. VIX methodology and specifications can be revised, so current Cboe documentation is the appropriate reference for technical calculation details.
Reading the annualized percentage responsibly
Because IV is annualized, its percentage is tied to a time convention rather than a guaranteed price change by expiration. A 30-day option and a one-year option can show the same annualized IV while implying different distributions of possible moves over their respective lives. Shorter-horizon interpretations require assumptions about how volatility scales through time and about the underlying return distribution.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not convert an IV percentage into a certainty band without stating those assumptions. Markets can produce jumps, skewed returns and changing volatility, while a pricing model is a simplification. Treat the displayed IV as a standardized comparison input for the contract, not as a promise that a specific percentage move will or will not occur.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming high IV means the stock will fall
High IV describes magnitude in either direction. Check the underlying thesis separately from the volatility reading.
Using one IV number for every option
Name the strike and expiration. Examine skew and term structure before comparing contracts.
Calling an option overpriced from IV alone
Compare IV with the underlying’s own history, the event calendar, the premium, spread and the movement you expect. A high reading can be justified by a real risk, and a low reading can still precede a large realized move.
Ignoring quote quality
Wide spreads, stale trades and illiquid strikes can make the inferred IV less representative. Use current bid and ask information and be cautious about tiny differences.
Forgetting the post-event reset
When an announcement passes, IV may fall sharply. Include that possibility in any earnings or event-option plan rather than evaluating direction alone.
Quick Recap
A concise framework for using IV in an options decision
- Define the risk or event and the time horizon you are trading.
- Select contracts with comparable expiration and moneyness when evaluating alternatives.
- Inspect the contract’s IV alongside its bid–ask spread and premium.
- Compare the reading with similar strikes, expirations and the underlying’s own history.
- Estimate how much movement your thesis requires and consider time decay and a possible IV change.
- After the trade, attribute the result separately to stock movement, IV change, time passage and other pricing inputs.
