AI image models can learn from images and their associated text, but that does not mean every model uses the same pictures or keeps a searchable copy of them. An image you upload is a separate matter: a service may process it, retain related records, or use it for model improvement under rules that depend on the provider, product, account, settings, and current policy.
What image data can be used to train AI models?
There is no single training collection shared by all AI models. Providers describe several possible sources: publicly available internet material, datasets obtained through commercial arrangements or partnerships, and material supplied or generated by users, human trainers, crowd workers, or researchers. Which sources apply depends on the provider and model.
Image models often learn from images paired with text, such as captions. OpenAI says its foundation models may use information from those broad source categories at different stages, including preparation, pretraining, post-training, and evaluation. Anthropic describes public internet information, commercially obtained datasets, and data provided by users or crowd workers among its possible sources; that is Anthropic’s account of its own practices, not a rule for the industry.
Research datasets illustrate the scale of image-and-text training, but they are not inventories of the images in every commercial model:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- The 2021 CLIP paper reports a dataset of 400 million image-text pairs: OpenAI authors, “Learning Transferable Visual Models From Natural Language Supervision”.
- The 2022 LAION-5B paper describes 5.85 billion CLIP-filtered image-text pairs, including 2.32 billion English-language pairs: LAION authors, “LAION-5B: An open large-scale dataset for training next generation image-text models”.
Those counts apply to the named research datasets, not to all training images or to any particular current commercial model.
Does a trained model store the original pictures?
Training adjusts a model’s numerical parameters—often called weights—so it can represent patterns in its examples. A useful plain-language distinction is that the model is not ordinarily a searchable folder of its training pictures. OpenAI says, “The model does not retain copies of the sentences, images, or audio it processes during training,” in its explainer on how ChatGPT and its foundation models are developed. Anthropic likewise explains that training teaches patterns rather than storing source material as a database.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
This distinction is not a guarantee that a model can never memorize or reproduce material from training. It also says nothing by itself about whether a service retains an image you submit later. Model parameters and service-side records are different things.
What happens to an image you upload?
An uploaded image is input to a product or service. It may be processed to answer a question, describe the image, or support another requested task. Whether that upload is later used to improve models is governed by the service’s policy and controls; the fact that a model can interpret an image does not establish that it will be used for training.

Keep three data-handling questions separate:
- Training use: Can the provider use the prompt or image to develop or improve a model?
- Operational retention: Does the service keep logs, conversation history, application state, or feedback records, and for how long?
- Safety or legal review: Can material be retained or reviewed for abuse prevention, safety, or legal reasons?
Answers can differ between consumer products, business accounts, and APIs, and between settings or endpoints within the same service.

| Product or case | Training or improvement | Retention and exceptions |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT consumer settings | OpenAI says turning off “Improve the model for everyone” means new conversations remain in chat history but are not used to train ChatGPT. | OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create memories, and are not used to improve models. They are retained for 30 days for safety purposes, then deleted. |
| OpenAI API | API inputs are not used to train or improve models by default unless a customer explicitly opts in. | Abuse-monitoring logs and application-state retention are separate. Some approved organizations may qualify for Modified Abuse Monitoring or Zero Data Retention, subject to limitations. OpenAI says image and file submissions are scanned for child sexual abuse material; an image flagged as a potential match may be retained for manual review even when certain retention controls are enabled. |
| Anthropic consumer service | Anthropic says user permission and feedback are relevant to model improvement. Its policy should not be conflated with its commercial offerings. | Anthropic says a feedback report can include the associated conversation, which may be retained for up to five years and used for improvement or training as permitted by law. |
OpenAI’s consumer controls are described in its May 6, 2026 privacy explanation. API retention and eligibility details are in OpenAI’s platform data-controls documentation. Anthropic’s consumer feedback and retention explanation is in “Is my data used for model training?”; its explanation of training sources and personal data is in “How Do You Use Personal Data in Model Training?”.

What to check before uploading a sensitive image
- Identify the exact service and account type. Consumer chat, business products, and APIs may have different data terms.
- Check the training control. For ChatGPT consumer accounts, review the “Improve the model for everyone” setting. For an API, check the applicable opt-in and data-control terms for the endpoint and account.
- Read the retention details separately. Look for conversation history, logs, application state, feedback handling, safety review, and any exceptions; a training opt-out does not necessarily mean immediate deletion of all service records.
- Consider whether feedback includes the image or conversation. A feedback action can send associated content for review or improvement under the provider’s terms.
- Avoid uploading images you do not need to share. If the content is sensitive, remove unnecessary details or use a service whose current policy and controls meet your requirements.
