What IFSCA Authorization Means for Investors and Financial Firms

IFSCA authorization is regulatory permission for a specific financial activity by a particular entity in an International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in India. It is not a blanket approval of a company, all its affiliates, or every product it offers—and it does not guarantee returns or protect investors from losses. Investors can check an entity’s permission and validity dates in the IFSCA directory.

What IFSCA regulates

The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) was established on April 27, 2020, under the International Financial Services Centres Authority Act, 2019. It is the unified authority responsible for developing and regulating financial products, services, and institutions in India’s IFSCs. IFSCA identifies GIFT IFSC as India’s maiden IFSC. Before IFSCA was established, the Reserve Bank of India, SEBI, PFRDA, and IRDAI regulated business in the IFSC. IFSCA’s overview explains its remit.

What authorization means for a financial firm

A firm’s permission is tied to its legal entity, activity, and applicable regulatory framework. A broad claim such as “IFSCA-authorized” is not enough to determine what the firm may do; the specific permission and any conditions matter.

Permissions depend on the activity

For example, IFSCA’s Capital Market Intermediaries regulation text lists activities including broker-dealer, clearing member, credit rating agency, custodian, debenture trustee, depository participant, distributor, ESG ratings and data products provider, investment adviser, investment banker, and research entity. An IFSC unit carrying out multiple activities may obtain unified registration as provided by IFSCA. The framework also describes exemptions, so a firm’s obligations cannot be determined from a broad business label alone. Consult the relevant IFSCA legal materials for the applicable activity and rules.

IFSCA permission and SEZ approval are separate

An IFSCA circular dated April 3, 2025, says regulated entities should at all times hold both their applicable, valid IFSCA permission and a valid Letter of Approval under the Special Economic Zones Act, 2005. The circular warns that expiry of the SEZ Letter of Approval or failure to renew it on time may lead to enforcement action, including cancellation of the relevant IFSCA registration, license, recognition, authorization, permission, or approval. Check IFSCA’s legal materials for the circular and related requirements.

Check the authoritative legal text

IFSCA’s legal database notes that the Official Gazette text prevails if it conflicts with the database copy. For a firm-specific legal conclusion, consult the applicable Gazette notification and current sector rules rather than relying on a summary or directory entry alone.

How investors can check a firm’s authorization

Use the official IFSCA directory, which can be searched by entity name, category, or subcategory. Its records include the registration, authorization, or license date; permission number; validity dates; registered address; contact details; website; and remarks.

  1. Search the firm name, then identify the exact legal entity—not just a brand or group name.
  2. Compare the listed activity and permission type with the service being offered to you.
  3. Check the authorization or registration number and whether the validity period covers the date you are checking.
  4. Read the remarks for any limitation or qualification relevant to the service.
  5. Check the directory close to your decision, because it is a point-in-time record and a past authorization claim does not establish current status.

A directory entry for one entity does not establish that its affiliates, group companies, products, or other activities are covered by the same permission.

What authorization does—and does not—tell an investor

IFSCA says its 2024 Listing Regulations were formulated to protect investor interests and promote fair, efficient, and transparent markets. Those are objectives of the regulatory framework, not a guarantee that an authorized firm or listed product is risk-free, suitable for you, or profitable. Applicable rules and remedies can also vary by activity and product. Read the IFSCA Listing Regulations information.

Authorization status answers a regulatory question: whether a particular entity has a stated permission for a stated activity. It does not by itself tell you whether an investment matches your needs. Assess the product’s risk, fees, liquidity, and suitability through its disclosures and other relevant information.

How to compare two firms’ regulatory status

What to compare Why it matters
Exact legal entity A brand or group name may differ from the entity holding permission.
Regulated activity and permission type The permission needs to cover the service being marketed.
Authorization number and validity dates These help identify the record and determine whether it is current for the date checked.
Directory remarks Remarks may include a limitation or qualification relevant to the permission.

This comparison concerns regulatory status only; it does not establish which firm or investment is better.

IFSCA’s reported registration count

IFSCA reported 1,260 registrations/authorisations as of June 2026. This is the authority’s overall count at that date, not a live total and not confirmation that any individual entity currently holds valid permission. Check the directory for the specific entity and its current record.
