What would Resident Evil on SNES have been like?
There is no established SNES debut of Resident Evil in the sources cited here. The idea is best treated as a counterfactual: imagine the exploration, puzzles, danger, and scarce supplies of survival horror rendered with the visual language and technical limits associated with 16-bit games. Dead of Darkness makes that thought experiment tangible through its top-down pixel-art presentation and resource-focused play, but it is not evidence of what a real SNES version would have looked or played like.

GameSpew described Dead of Darkness as essentially a 2D Resident Evil in its February 11, 2025 impressions piece. That is a reviewer’s comparison, not a confirmed statement of developer intent. The official product description instead presents it as a 2D survival-horror action-adventure.

What is Dead of Darkness?
Developed by Retrofiction Games, Dead of Darkness is set in England in 1985. Private investigator Miles Windham travels to Velvet Island while pursuing a lead connected to his daughter’s death. The game features Miles and Olivia as playable characters and combines exploration and puzzles with careful management of ammunition and other resources.

Its old-school, top-down pixel art gives the game a retro appearance, while its setting, voiced cast, and survival-horror structure are its own. Eastasiasoft reported 25 spoken roles in the voice-over work in a June 6, 2024 announcement; that figure describes the reported voice work, not a current platform or sales statistic.
Is Dead of Darkness available on PS5?
Yes. The US PlayStation Store lists Dead of Darkness for PS4 and PS5 and gives July 2, 2025 as the release date for that listing. The developer’s fact sheet separately gives January 23, 2025 as the Steam release date, so the dates refer to different platforms. Store details can vary by region.

PS5 physical edition
Eastasiasoft announced a boxed PS5 edition with physical-release partner Funbox Media, scheduled for March 13, 2026 in Europe and the Americas. That announced date does not establish current stock in any particular country or retailer; check the relevant regional listing for availability.

How close is it to the imagined SNES version?
The strongest points of comparison are its retro pixel-art presentation and its survival-horror loop: explore, solve puzzles, and make limited resources last. Those are useful ways to picture a 16-bit-flavored take on the genre. They do not establish that Dead of Darkness uses actual SNES hardware constraints, that it is a port of Resident Evil, or that its developers set out to answer this exact hypothetical.
The official sources identify the game as Dead of Darkness, developed by Retrofiction Games. They do not identify it as a sequel called Dead of Darkness 2. The PlayStation Store describes it as a 2D survival-horror action-adventure, while GameSpew’s comparison is an editorial shorthand rather than a formal franchise connection.
