A current driver’s license or state ID is the most widely listed way to prove your age at a U.S. bar or restaurant. Passports, passport cards and military IDs are also common alternatives. But no document is guaranteed to be accepted everywhere: state alcohol rules and the venue’s own policy both matter.
Common IDs that may prove your age
State guidance commonly names these government-issued documents, subject to local requirements:

What can make an ID unacceptable?
The document may need to be current, unexpired, unaltered, and display the information required by local rules. California says bona fide identification must be current and include the holder’s name, date of birth, photograph and physical description. Washington requires a photo and date of birth, as well as a signature except on federally issued ID; its rule does not allow expired documents. California ABC; Washington regulation.

These are state examples, not a national checklist. Idaho describes qualifying state or federal identification and names tribal and foreign-government documents, while Arizona publishes a more specific list and limits acceptance of foreign documents. Check the alcohol regulator for the state where you plan to visit rather than assuming another state’s list applies.

Can a bar or restaurant set a stricter policy?
Yes. A venue’s policy can be stricter than the legal minimum. California ABC gives examples including accepting only California driver’s licenses or IDs, or requiring everyone buying alcohol to show identification regardless of age. California ABC.
Checking requirements also depend on the type of business and jurisdiction. Texas guidance describes mandatory age verification for certain off-premises sales and advises on-premises sellers to check IDs to avoid illegal service. Utah’s March 2026 update describes different requirements by license type: bars and taverns retain 100% checks, while restaurants check customers who appear 35 or younger under the described rules. These examples concern checking practices, not a guarantee that every listed document will be accepted at every venue. Temporary and digital IDs need a local check
Do not assume a temporary paper license, DMV receipt or mobile ID will work. California’s guidance says interim or temporary licenses and DMV receipts are not bona fide identification under its standard. Montana agency guidance reports that mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs are accepted there effective September 1, 2025, illustrating that mobile-ID acceptance is location-specific. How to check before you go
- Identify the state and venue type. Alcohol rules can differ between states and between bars, restaurants and off-premises sellers.
- Check the state alcohol regulator’s guidance. Confirm whether your exact document is listed and whether it must be current, unexpired or contain particular details.
- Call the venue if the ID is uncommon. Ask specifically whether it accepts your foreign, tribal, temporary or digital credential; a venue may impose a stricter policy than state law.
- Bring another accepted document if possible. If you have a current state ID or driver’s license, it may avoid uncertainty when your primary document is less common.
REAL ID status by itself is not a universal bar requirement in the state guidance cited here. The relevant questions are whether the document meets local identification rules and whether the establishment accepts it.
