iCloud+ is Apple’s paid expansion of iCloud. In addition to extra cloud storage, it bundles privacy and smart-home features: iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, HomeKit Secure Video, custom email domains, and Apple Invites. The exact feature set can vary by country or region.
The two privacy tools solve different problems. Private Relay changes how supported Safari browsing traffic reaches websites by separating your IP address from the destination you visit. Hide My Email creates random forwarding addresses so you can sign up for services without giving them your personal email address.

What does iCloud+ include?
Every iCloud account includes some storage at no charge. iCloud+ adds a paid storage allowance and a group of premium services. Apple’s current overview lists these features:
- Additional iCloud storage
- iCloud Private Relay
- Hide My Email
- HomeKit Secure Video
- Custom Email Domain
- Apple Invites
Availability is not universal. Apple can limit individual features by country, region, operating system, device, or service eligibility, so check the iCloud+ information shown in your local Apple account before subscribing.

Storage tiers and billing
Apple lists five iCloud+ storage sizes: 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB. Subscriptions are billed monthly. Prices depend on the country or region associated with your Apple account; there is no single worldwide price. For the amount charged in your market, open the iCloud storage plan screen on your device or the local Apple plan page immediately before purchasing.
An iCloud+ subscription can be shared with up to five other family members through Family Sharing. Shared storage does not merge everyone’s files into one visible folder: each person keeps a separate Apple account and private data while drawing from the family storage pool.
What the storage is used for
iCloud storage can hold iPhone and iPad backups, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive files, Mail, Messages and other app data. Mail sent to a custom iCloud domain also counts against the account’s storage. If the account becomes full, new messages to custom addresses can be affected, so leave room for mail as well as photos and backups.

What is iCloud Private Relay?
iCloud Private Relay is Apple’s privacy-routing service for Safari browsing and some unencrypted internet traffic. It is designed to prevent a single network operator, website, or relay from linking your identity and the destination you request.
Apple describes it as “an internet privacy service that uses an innovative multihop architecture in which users’ requests are sent through two separate internet relays operated by different entities.” The two-relay design is the important distinction from ordinary proxying.

How the two relays separate your identity
- Your device sends a request through an encrypted connection to the first relay. That relay can see your IP address, which is needed to return traffic to you, but it does not receive the final website destination in readable form.
- The first relay passes the request onward without exposing your original IP address to the second relay.
- The second relay connects to the requested website. It can see the destination and deliver the response, but it does not know your original IP address.
Because the relays are separated, no single relay is intended to hold both your real network address and the website you visit. Private Relay is therefore a privacy layer, not an anonymity guarantee against every form of tracking. Websites can still use information you deliberately provide, account logins, cookies, browser fingerprints, or other signals.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is Private Relay a VPN?
No. Private Relay should not be treated as a system-wide VPN. Apple’s description focuses on Safari and some unencrypted internet traffic; the available information does not establish coverage for every app, protocol, or connection on an Apple device. A VPN generally creates a device- or network-level tunnel whose behavior depends on the VPN provider and its software. Private Relay instead uses Apple’s two-relay architecture and has a narrower, Apple-defined scope.
That difference matters when troubleshooting. Turning on Private Relay does not guarantee that a streaming app, game, corporate client, smart-home device, or other non-Safari connection will use the same routing. It also does not promise access to another country’s catalog or bypass every network restriction.
Why a website may behave differently
Some websites may ask for extra sign-in steps, display an unexpected region, or reject a connection they cannot classify normally. Apple also notes that Private Relay can affect an internet provider’s ability to apply data-cap exemptions. If a site stops working correctly, temporarily turn Private Relay off for the affected network, complete the task, and turn it back on afterward if appropriate.
How to turn Private Relay on or off
- Open Settings on an iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your Apple Account name, then tap iCloud.
- Choose Private Relay.
- Use the switch to enable or disable the service and follow any confirmation prompt.
Labels can vary slightly by operating-system release. On a Mac, look in System Settings, select your Apple Account, open iCloud, and choose Private Relay. If the option is missing, check whether the Apple Account, region, device software, or network configuration supports it.

Hide My Email generates a unique, random address that forwards incoming messages to an inbox you choose. You can give that alias to a retailer, newsletter, app, or other service instead of exposing your personal address.

This is forwarding, not a separate mailbox. Messages arrive in the destination inbox you selected, and replies can be sent through the alias so the other party does not need to see your personal address. Apple may limit the total number of aliases an account can create.
Create and manage an alias
- Open Settings and tap your Apple Account name.
- Tap iCloud, then choose Hide My Email.
- Tap the control to create a new address.
- Add a label or note that identifies the service, then confirm the forwarding destination.
- Copy the generated address into the signup form or provide it to the organization contacting you.
In the same Hide My Email area, you can review aliases, change the forwarding destination where supported, deactivate an address, reactivate one you previously stopped, or delete an alias you no longer need. Deactivation is useful when a service starts sending unwanted mail; deletion is more permanent and can prevent future delivery to that alias.
Private Relay and Hide My Email are not alternatives
| Feature | Protects | How it works | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Private Relay | IP-address and browsing-destination separation for supported traffic | Routes requests through two separate relays | Reduce network-based tracking while browsing in Safari |
| Hide My Email | Your personal email address | Creates a random alias that forwards to your inbox | Sign up for a service without disclosing your main address |
Using one does not automatically enable the other. Private Relay does not create email aliases, and Hide My Email does not change how your web traffic is routed.
HomeKit Secure Video: what the camera allowance means
HomeKit Secure Video stores recordings from compatible HomeKit-enabled security cameras in iCloud with end-to-end encryption. Apple says camera activity is analyzed on Apple devices in the home, while recordings are sent to iCloud in encrypted form.
You need all of the following:
- An iCloud+ plan with the required camera allowance
- A security camera that specifically supports HomeKit Secure Video
- A supported Apple device configured as a home hub
- A compatible, up-to-date Home app and Apple software environment
A generic Wi-Fi or “smart” camera is not automatically compatible. Check the camera maker’s current HomeKit Secure Video support and Apple’s compatibility requirements before buying hardware. The 50 GB plan supports recording for one camera, 200 GB supports up to five, and 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB plans support an unlimited number of cameras. Those limits describe how many cameras can use the service; they do not include the physical cameras or home-hub hardware.
Custom Email Domain in iCloud Mail
Custom Email Domain lets you use iCloud Mail with a domain you own or purchase through iCloud.com. Instead of ending in a standard iCloud address, mail can use a domain associated with your household or personal identity.

You can invite family members to use the same domain. Messages and attachments stored in iCloud Mail count toward the account’s iCloud storage, so monitor available space if the domain receives substantial mail. A full account can interfere with receiving new messages at custom addresses.

How to choose an iCloud+ plan
Choose the smallest tier that covers your actual storage and camera requirements, then account for family sharing and the privacy features you will use.
Start with storage demand
- Check the storage breakdown in Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Identify whether Photos, device backups, iCloud Drive, Mail, or app data is growing fastest.
- Leave headroom for future photos, backups, and mail instead of selecting a tier that is already nearly full.
Match camera needs to the tier
If you use no HomeKit Secure Video cameras, do not select a larger plan solely for camera capacity. One camera fits the 50 GB allowance; a household with two to five cameras needs the 200 GB allowance; households exceeding five cameras need a 2 TB, 6 TB, or 12 TB tier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConsider family sharing
Calculate the combined storage needs of everyone who will join Family Sharing. Up to five other family members can share the subscription, but each person’s backups, photos, files, and mail still consume the common pool.

Value the features separately
Private Relay is most useful if Safari privacy and IP-address separation matter to you. Hide My Email is valuable when you regularly sign up for services, want to limit spam, or need to disable an address later. HomeKit Secure Video matters only if you have compatible cameras and a supported home hub. Custom domains matter only if you want branded or personalized iCloud Mail addresses. Apple Invites availability should be confirmed for your region.
Changing or cancelling iCloud+
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your Apple Account name, choose iCloud, and open the storage-management or subscription option. From there, select a different plan or the cancellation control and follow the confirmation screens. The exact label can differ by software version.
Apple’s iPhone guidance says cancellation removes access to the additional storage and iCloud+ features. Before cancelling, check your storage usage and move or delete enough data to fit within the remaining allowance. Do not wait until after cancellation to discover that backups, photos, mail, or files exceed the available space.
Is iCloud+ worth paying for?
iCloud+ is a practical upgrade when you need more room for Apple backups or Photos and can use at least one included feature. The strongest reasons are a storage shortage, a family that can share one plan, Safari privacy through Private Relay, disposable forwarding addresses through Hide My Email, or HomeKit Secure Video with compatible cameras.
It is less compelling if your free storage is sufficient, you do not use Apple’s supported services, you need a system-wide VPN, or you have cameras that do not support HomeKit Secure Video. Compare the tier by storage consumption and camera count first; treat the privacy and mail tools as additional benefits rather than substitutes for other network or email services.
Feature names, regional availability, device support, camera compatibility, and prices can change. Verify the plan details displayed for your Apple Account before subscribing, upgrading, or cancelling.
