What Huawei Ascend Chips Are and How They Power AI Systems

Huawei Ascend is a family of artificial-intelligence processors, not a single chip. Huawei introduced Ascend 310 in 2018 for lower-power device and edge workloads, then introduced Ascend 910 in 2019 for larger training and inference systems. A usable Ascend deployment also requires memory, software, host servers or edge hardware, and—at larger scale—an interconnect linking many processors.

The practical stack runs from an Ascend processor to an accelerator module or card, through Huawei’s CANN software layer and a supported AI framework, into a server, appliance or edge station. Multiple servers can then be combined into a SuperPoD for workloads that exceed one accelerator’s capacity.

Ascend is a processor family, not one product

Huawei’s Ascend name covers several generations and product forms. The company says it launched the Ascend 310 in 2018 and the Ascend 910 in 2019. Later 910B and 910C generations appear in discussions of larger infrastructure systems, but the label alone does not identify a complete server, a software version or a guaranteed performance level. Huawei’s chip history and deployment descriptions are available in its company materials (Huawei 2025 keynote).

Family or generation Typical role described by Huawei What the label does not tell you
Ascend 310 Lower-power inference in devices and edge systems The exact board, memory, cooling, software release or regional availability
Ascend 910 Larger data-center training and inference Results for a particular model, precision, cluster or benchmark
Ascend 910B/910C Later-generation infrastructure discussions and multi-processor systems Whether a specific server or card is available to your organization
Planned 950, 960 and 970 series Roadmap generations described in Huawei announcements A promise of current shipment or broad commercial availability

Huawei rotating chairman Eric Xu summarized the company’s framing in a September 2025 speech: “Chips are the building blocks of computing power.” That statement explains the distinction between a processor and an AI system: the chip supplies computation, while the surrounding platform determines how a model is loaded, connected, cooled, monitored and operated.

How an Ascend AI system fits together

A useful conceptual sequence is:

  1. Ascend processor: the neural-processing hardware performs tensor and other AI operations.
  2. Module, accelerator card or system board: the processor is packaged with memory, power delivery, cooling and host connectivity.
  3. CANN and framework software: models are compiled, adapted and executed for the target Da Vinci NPU hardware.
  4. Server, appliance or edge system: the accelerator is installed where data enters the system and where applications run.
  5. Interconnect and cluster: several accelerators or servers exchange data when one device cannot meet the model’s memory or throughput needs.

Huawei’s Atlas portfolio illustrates the range of forms: device modules, data-center accelerator cards, edge stations and enterprise appliances. These are different deployment packages rather than interchangeable names. A compact edge module may prioritize power and latency, while a data-center card or multi-server system prioritizes capacity, throughput and serviceability (Huawei Atlas overview).

Why the surrounding hardware matters

AI performance depends on more than the arithmetic units. The system must hold model weights and intermediate activations in memory, move data between processors, provide an appropriate host interface and remove heat. For production inference, storage, networking, redundancy and software monitoring can be as important as peak chip throughput. Consequently, two products carrying the same Ascend family name may behave differently because they use different memory capacities, firmware, cooling arrangements or host servers.

Ascend 310 and Ascend 910: the practical difference

The simplest distinction is placement: Ascend 310 is associated with efficient device and edge inference, whereas the 910 family is associated with larger training and inference installations. It is not a universal performance ranking. Workload, precision, model support, memory and the number of connected processors determine the result.

Decision point Ascend 310-oriented deployment Ascend 910-oriented deployment
Where it runs Device, gateway, edge station or compact appliance Data-center server, accelerator platform or clustered system
Primary objective Low-power, low-latency inference near the data source Higher-capacity training or inference with larger models
Scaling pattern Often one or a small number of accelerators Multiple accelerators and servers connected by a high-speed fabric
Integration questions Thermal envelope, host interface, field deployment and local software Memory capacity, cluster topology, cooling, scheduling and operations
Performance evidence Must be tested on the selected card or module and model Must be tested on the selected server, software stack and cluster size

Huawei’s historical technical material lists the original Ascend 310 at 16 TOPS INT8 and under 8 W. That is a 2019-era specification for the original product, not a blanket specification for every later 310-series implementation (Huawei technical publication).

No independent, apples-to-apples benchmark for the configurations discussed here is established in the available evidence. Do not infer a universal winner from “310” or “910” in a product name.

What an Ascend accelerator looks like in practice

Atlas products package Ascend processors for a particular installation. A physical example is the Atlas 300I Duo inference card. Huawei’s guide specifies two 310-series processors, PCIe Gen4 compatibility, maximum power consumption of 150 W and dimensions of 266.7 × 18.46 × 111.15 mm. In the virtualization mode described by that guide, one 310-series processor can be divided into as many as seven virtual NPUs (Atlas 300I Duo guide).

Those numbers describe the documented card, not every Atlas board. Before ordering, verify the exact revision, available firmware, supported host-server slots, auxiliary power, airflow direction and operating-system requirements. A PCIe-compatible card can still be unsuitable if the server lacks the required cooling, slot spacing or driver support.

Choosing a form factor

  • Device or module: suited to embedded products where power, size and local response are priorities.
  • PCIe accelerator card: installed in a host server for inference or specialized processing.
  • Edge station: combines compute, storage and networking near cameras, sensors or industrial equipment.
  • Enterprise appliance: offers a more integrated deployment with validated hardware and software.
  • Multi-server system: joins many accelerators when model size, concurrency or training time exceeds one host.

CANN is the software layer that makes Ascend usable

CANN, short for Compute Architecture for Neural Networks, is software—not another Ascend chip. Huawei describes it as a heterogeneous AI computing architecture and toolchain for model development, adaptation or conversion, and execution on supported platforms. It provides the libraries, compiler-related components, runtime and developer interfaces needed to map model operations onto Huawei’s Da Vinci NPU hardware (Huawei CANN documentation).

In a typical workflow, a team starts with a model from a supported framework, checks whether its operators are available, converts or adapts the model for the target Ascend environment, compiles required kernels and runs it through the CANN runtime. Unsupported operations may require a different implementation, a custom operator or a change to the model graph. The exact commands and compatibility depend on the CANN release, framework version, processor generation and operating system.

Huawei’s 2024 annual report says CANN 8.0 added more than 80 fused operators and over 100 Ascend C APIs. Those are Huawei-reported figures for its 2024 reporting year, not an independent software audit (Huawei 2024 annual report).

Software checks before deployment

  • Confirm that the intended model framework and operators are supported by the exact CANN release.
  • Check whether quantization, mixed precision and dynamic shapes are supported for the target processor.
  • Match driver, firmware, runtime and toolkit versions; a version mismatch can prevent device discovery or compilation.
  • Measure end-to-end latency, including preprocessing, host-to-device transfers and postprocessing.
  • Plan a fallback for unsupported operators instead of assuming the model will run unchanged.

How large Ascend systems scale with SuperPoD

For demanding workloads, Huawei describes a SuperPoD architecture that deeply interconnects physical servers so they operate like one logical server. The interconnect is intended to let processors share data and resources more efficiently than treating every server as an isolated island. Huawei Director of the Board and CEO of the ICT Business Group Yang Chaobin called it “the groundbreaking SuperPoD architecture based on our UnifiedBus interconnect protocol” in a September 2025 announcement (Huawei SuperPoD announcement).

Huawei’s September 2025 keynote said an Atlas 900 A3 configuration could contain up to 384 Ascend 910C chips and deliver up to 300 PFLOPS. Both figures are Huawei’s announced product claims; they are not independent benchmark results established here (Huawei 2025 keynote).

In practical terms, scaling introduces new engineering problems: topology-aware scheduling, collective communication, synchronized software versions, power distribution, cooling capacity and failure recovery. A larger chip count does not automatically produce proportional application performance. The model, batch size, communication pattern and software optimization determine how effectively the cluster is used.

How to decide which Ascend deployment you need

  1. Define the workload. Separate real-time inference, batch inference, fine-tuning and full training. Record model size, precision, input rate, latency target and concurrency.
  2. Choose the placement. Use an edge-oriented form when data must remain local or network latency is unacceptable. Use a data-center platform when the model or user volume requires centralized capacity.
  3. Check memory and host limits. Confirm that model weights, runtime buffers and expected batch sizes fit the selected card or server; then verify PCIe lanes, slot space, power and airflow.
  4. Validate the software path. Map every model operator to the supported CANN, framework, driver and firmware combination. Test conversion before committing to hardware.
  5. Measure the complete pipeline. Record preprocessing, inference, communication and postprocessing latency, plus sustained throughput and power under the intended load.
  6. Plan operations. Document firmware updates, replacement parts, monitoring, rollback procedures and support coverage for the country where the system will run.
  7. Scale only when needed. Add accelerators or move to a SuperPoD after single-host measurements show that memory, throughput or training time is the limiting factor.

Ecosystem, adoption figures and what they mean

Huawei reported in its 2025 annual report that more than 350 partners had launched Ascend-based AI appliances and that over 3,000 partners had incubated more than 6,700 industry solutions. These are company-reported ecosystem counts, so they indicate Huawei’s stated partner activity rather than an independently audited market share (Huawei 2025 annual report).

A September 2026 Huawei keynote said the CANN community had more than 5,200 monthly active developers. That is also a company-reported metric, not an independently verified developer census (Huawei 2026 keynote).

Roadmap statements need a date

In September 2025, Huawei described planned Ascend 950PR and 950DT products followed by 960 and 970 series over the next three years. Those were roadmap statements made at that time. Huawei’s September 2026 announcement describes Atlas 960E as an NPO-based SuperPoD (Huawei 2026 announcement).

A roadmap is not proof that a product is shipping, purchasable or supported in every market. Treat each generation as a dated announcement until Huawei or an authorized supplier confirms current availability, specifications, software compatibility and support terms.

Common deployment pitfalls

Assuming the chip is the whole solution

An accelerator without the correct host, memory, CANN release and model support cannot deliver a production system. Evaluate the complete bill of materials and software stack.

Ignoring cooling and power

The Atlas 300I Duo guide’s 150-W maximum illustrates why a card’s thermal design power and chassis airflow must be checked together. Edge modules and server cards have different environmental constraints.

Expecting automatic model portability

Framework compatibility does not mean every operator is available on every processor and CANN version. Conversion logs and representative workload tests should be part of acceptance testing.

Reading vendor PFLOPS as application speed

Peak figures such as the announced 300 PFLOPS for Atlas 900 A3 describe a vendor configuration and stated measurement context. They do not predict latency or throughput for your model without a controlled benchmark.

Bottom line for buyers and engineers

Huawei Ascend chips are AI processors that become useful through a broader platform: Atlas hardware or another host design, CANN software, a supported model framework, and networking when the workload scales out. Ascend 310 is the family member most closely associated with efficient edge and device inference, while Ascend 910-class systems target larger data-center workloads. The right choice depends on model size, latency, power, memory, software readiness and operational support—not on the family number alone.
