The company’s help guidance warns that unregulated chocolate pieces can create hot spots. It says those hot spots may affect the motor. A later help article adds that unevenly grated chocolate or instant cocoa mix can cause a lumpy drink, uneven melting or heat pockets that strain the motor and may dislodge the magnetic whisk. These are manufacturer warnings, not findings from an independent laboratory test.

Choose by format
Sachets remove the measuring step and are useful when different people want different recipes. Pouches generally make more sense when you prepare the same flavour repeatedly and want to portion it yourself. The Canadian instructions give a concrete starting point for a pouch: 35 g of flakes with 220 ml of milk.
Do not assume that a pouch and a sachet are interchangeable by volume. A sachet is already portioned by the manufacturer; a pouch should be weighed or measured according to the instructions supplied with that product.
How to make a sachet in the Velvetiser
- Open one Hotel Chocolat hot-chocolate sachet.

The 220 ml and 35 g figures are preparation instructions published by Hotel Chocolat Canada, not universal performance measurements. They may not apply to every recipe, market or Velvetiser model, so check the pouch label when it differs.

Can you use another chocolate bar or grated chocolate?
Hotel Chocolat does not confirm a specific third-party brand as compatible. Its help material instead cautions against adding unregulated chocolate pieces. A bar that looks similar to a flake may melt at a different rate, contain inclusions that interfere with the whisk or produce an uneven concentration of solids.
Grating your own chocolate is also not treated as an approved substitute. The company specifically warns that unevenly grated chocolate can melt unevenly and create heat pockets. Large shavings, chunks or clumps can put extra load on the whisk and motor, while fine powder can clog the whisk and affect the non-stick surface.
If you decide to experiment despite that guidance, you are accepting a risk that the manufacturer does not support. There is no independently confirmed compatibility list that establishes a safe third-party flake, powder or grated bar for every Velvetiser model.
What the warranty warning means
Hotel Chocolat’s US product page states: “Using other chocolate may not work properly and risks damaging the Velvetiser – for this reason it would invalidate your warranty.” That is the company’s stated warranty position for the US page, not a universal legal rule for every country.

Hot flakes and cold chocolate are different products
Hotel Chocolat’s hot recipes use real chocolate flakes. Its cold recipes use finely milled real chocolate and are intended for a different machine setting. Selecting the wrong setting can change the texture and temperature, even when the flavour name looks familiar.
- For a product labelled as hot chocolate flakes, use the hot setting.
- For a product labelled for a cold drink, follow its cold-setting instructions.
- Do not substitute cold-drink powder or finely milled chocolate for hot flakes without checking the product directions.
Troubleshooting an uneven or lumpy drink
The chocolate has not melted completely
Check that you used the correct hot product, stayed within the fill indicator and followed the stated portion. Unevenly grated pieces and unsuitable powders are specifically identified by Hotel Chocolat as causes of poor melting.
The whisk appears blocked
Stop using the machine, allow it to cool and clean it according to the Velvetiser instructions. Hotel Chocolat says powdered hot chocolate can clog the whisk. Do not scrape the non-stick coating with an abrasive tool.

The drink is grainy or has unmelted pieces
Confirm that the product is a hot-flake recipe rather than a cold-drink chocolate. Also check that the flakes were measured correctly and were not replaced with chunks or irregular shavings.
The machine makes an unusual sound or the whisk moves poorly
Turn the machine off and let it cool before inspecting the whisk. The manufacturer says heat pockets and unsuitable chocolate pieces can strain the motor or dislodge the magnetic whisk. If the problem continues with the recommended product and correct fill level, contact Hotel Chocolat or the service provider for your model instead of repeatedly restarting the cycle.
