Honda and Redwire are exploring a robotic system for future commercial space stations that could take on parts of research and routine laboratory work. The concept combines Honda’s dexterous multi-fingered hand, Redwire’s STAARK robotic arm and experiment-locker technology; it is under development, not an operating station system.
What the proposed robot could do
Honda says potential tasks include retrieving experiments, moving samples and materials, and operating laboratory equipment. The partners’ broader concept could also extend to inventory management, cargo movement and inspection. These are possible applications, not a finalized feature list or capabilities demonstrated by the integrated system.
The intended benefit is to automate repetitive work so crews can devote more time to other duties. Honda frames that goal around future commercial low Earth orbit stations, which may be designed for smaller crews and shorter astronaut stays. The announcement gives no measured estimate of crew time saved or research output gained.
How the three elements fit together
| Element | Proposed role | What Honda’s announcement says |
|---|---|---|
| Redwire STAARK robotic arm | Reach and positioning | Redwire describes STAARK as an affordable, modular and customizable robotic system for on-orbit applications. Honda reports that recent testing demonstrated autonomous tracking and grasping of dynamic objects. |
| Honda multi-fingered hand | Dexterous contact and manipulation | Honda says actively controlled joints and force and tactile sensing across the fingertips and palm are intended to support precise contact, delicate handling, small-object manipulation and equipment operation. |
| Experiment-locker technology | Part of the proposed station-laboratory setup | The announcement identifies it as a component of the concept but does not publish technical specifications or explain its detailed operation. |
In a possible workflow, the arm could position the hand near equipment or materials, and the hand could manipulate a sample or operate a control. That is a description of the proposed roles, not a reported end-to-end demonstration. The announcement provides no comparative specifications, payload ratings, prices or integrated test results.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What has been tested—and what has not been established
Honda says its hand has undergone durability testing under varied fingertip loads, but publishes no quantitative results. Honda also reports Redwire’s STAARK tracking-and-grasping test; that report concerns the arm, not the combined Honda-Redwire system.
The October 1, 2026 announcement does not report integrated-system performance, time savings, research throughput or cost reductions. It also names no commercial station customer, contract, deployment or development schedule, and gives no price. The concept should therefore be understood as exploratory work rather than a confirmed station service.
