These steps cannot guarantee a home will survive a wildfire or make it safe to ignore evacuation orders. The federal guidance cited here addresses home preparedness; it does not establish how much mountain forests have dried or how wildfire risk has changed in any particular region.
What defensible space does—and what it cannot do
Defensible space is an area around a building where vegetation, debris, and other combustible fuels are treated or reduced. FEMA guidance says its design should take local vegetation, weather, and topography into account. That makes it a site-specific measure, not a universal distance or formula.

Reducing connected fuels can limit ways fire moves across a property. FEMA describes fire spreading horizontally between shrubs and trees and vertically from grasses and shrubs into tree crowns. Wind-driven embers pose a separate hazard, so a cleared or carefully managed yard does not prevent every route by which fire can threaten a home. See FEMA’s defensible-space fact sheet.
Start with debris on and next to the house
Leaves and needles that collect on roofs, in gutters, and on decks are combustible material attached to the home. Federal wildfire-preparedness guidance also recommends removing vines and moving shrubs away from the sides of the house. Clear accumulated debris from these areas and around the foundation, using safe access practices appropriate to the property. The guidance does not prescribe a particular tool. Find the recommendations in the Ready.gov wildfire preparedness guidance.

Komodo provides fire relief and peace of mind for home and property owners in high hazard fire prone areas. Part of the suite of products developed to combat wildfires, Komodo is the next generation of advanced fire prevention and fire protection technology (US and World Organization Patents Pending).
- Komodo Kit-1 contains: 1) Lithium-ion battery-powered backpack sprayer. 2) 20 lbs of Komodo K-101. 3) Reusable 5-gallon poly container. 4) Gloves, goggles, and masks. 5) Funnel. 6) Mixer attachment (DRILL NOT INCLUDED) 7.Docs & instructional videos.
- Komodo, Proudly-Made in the USA, was designed to help create defensible space around properties by effectively neutralizing the threat of combustion and fire on vegetation fuel sources. Cellulosic materials such as dried grass, weeds, shrubs, trees, and similar fuel will not burn when treated with Komodo. Furthermore, treated areas will block and retard approaching fire fronts to protect structures and property otherwise at risk.
- Komodo has proven to be effective and praised by fire and forestry professionals. The only truly prevention, protection, and fire retardation in an easy-to-use, do-it-yourself (DIY) kit. Komodo is class A fire protection neutralizing combustible cellulosic growth around property effective on grass, shrubs, dried growth, and other vegetation.
- Komodo exclusive fire prevention technology for “once-and-done” all season application with rain protection and weatherization built in. Kit-1 will cover 2000-4000 sq ft of vegetation. Area coverage will vary greatly based on type of vegetation, sprayer applicator and technique, number of coats applied, wind, and many other factors.
Break up fuel paths around the home
Look for vegetation or debris that creates a continuous route from ground-level fuels toward the house or into tree crowns. Remove or prune plants and branches as local guidance allows. Where suitable for the site, lower-fuel breaks such as gravel paths, driveways, or maintained lawn areas can interrupt vegetation continuity. Whether those treatments are appropriate depends on local conditions; they are not a substitute for a property-specific plan.
Account for slope, wind, and local rules
Terrain changes how fire may approach a home. Ready.gov’s guidance says steeper slopes call for more open space, particularly on the downhill side, but it does not give a universal spacing formula for every property. Consider slope and wind exposure with a local fire agency or qualified professional before deciding how much vegetation to remove.

Federal guidance is broad. Local agencies are better placed to explain how local vegetation, weather, topography, codes, and current conditions affect a plan. Because the property’s jurisdiction is not specified here, no local clearance distance, vegetation-removal permission, inspection rule, or insurance requirement can be verified. Check local requirements before making substantial changes.

Defensible-space work can reduce some exposure; it does not remove wildfire danger. Prepare household plans and routes, monitor local alerts, and leave promptly when officials direct an evacuation. Do not treat work on the property as a reason to remain during an evacuation.

- The Patented WASP Gutter Mount is made in North America and was developed for and is used by over 200 Fire Departments.
- WASP brackets are wind and heat resistant and clip on quickly & securely with any household pole long enough to reach your gutters. They are fully adjustable to fit all types of gutters.
- With a powerful agricultural grade sprinkler head, the WASP brackets get water onto the roof and surrounding area.
- The WASP Kit also includes WASP fence/fascia mounts for sprinkler use on homes without gutters. Mount sprinklers to walls or fences to protect equipment and gutterless structures.
- The WASP kit provides coverage for a standard sized home and has a built-in adjustment for higher roof pitches. The rotating sprinkler heads are rated for a 33 foot spray radius and incorporate agricultural grade wind fighting technology.
What the forest-drying question does—and does not—establish
The cited FEMA and Ready.gov material explains home-preparedness measures, not mountain-forest moisture conditions. It does not establish how much forests have dried, why they may have dried, or how wildfire risk has changed in a specific region. Answering those questions requires location-specific, dated evidence on forest conditions; the general preparedness recommendations above should not be read as a finding about a particular mountain range.
