In a ceramic capacitor, high permittivity means the dielectric material has a high dielectric constant, so the capacitor can provide more capacitance in a given volume. This is why compact multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) can offer large nominal values in small packages.
The trade-off is that high-permittivity capacitors—usually Class 2 dielectrics such as X5R and X7R—are less stable than Class 1 C0G/NP0 parts. Their usable capacitance can change with temperature, applied DC voltage, frequency and time. The value printed in a part number is therefore a nominal reference, not necessarily the capacitance your circuit receives under operating conditions.

What permittivity means inside a capacitor
Permittivity describes how a dielectric responds when an electric field is applied. In a simplified capacitor model, capacitance is related to the dielectric’s permittivity by:

C = εA/d
Here, C is capacitance, ε is the dielectric permittivity, A is the effective electrode area and d is the dielectric thickness. If the electrode geometry and thickness stay the same, increasing permittivity increases capacitance.

MLCCs take advantage of all three design variables. They stack many alternating ceramic and metal layers, use very thin dielectric layers and select ceramic formulations with high dielectric constants. The result is substantial capacitance in a small surface-mount package.
Murata describes these high-dielectric formulations as Class 2 ceramics and identifies barium titanate as their principal material basis. X5R and X7R are common examples. They are not simply “better” versions of low-permittivity ceramics; they are optimized for a different balance of capacitance, size and stability.
Why high permittivity enables smaller, higher-value MLCCs
A capacitor designer can obtain more capacitance by increasing electrode area, adding more layers, reducing dielectric thickness or using a material with higher permittivity. High-permittivity ceramic allows the manufacturer to achieve a target value without making the component physically large.
That density matters in power converters, processors, radios and other assemblies where board area and component height are limited. A Class 2 MLCC can provide a useful bulk of bypass or smoothing capacitance in a package that would hold far less capacitance if it used a highly stable Class 1 dielectric.

The density advantage is conditional. A nominal 10 µF part, for example, is specified at particular test conditions. When the component is placed across a powered rail, its effective capacitance may be substantially lower because the applied electric field changes the dielectric response. The correct design question is not only “What value is printed on the part?” but also “How much capacitance remains at my voltage, temperature and frequency?”
Class 1 and Class 2: the essential comparison
| Characteristic | Class 1 (C0G/NP0) | Class 2 (X5R/X7R) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary strength | Very stable capacitance | High capacitance in a compact case |
| Typical dielectric approach | Temperature-compensating, low-loss ceramic | High-dielectric-constant ceramic, commonly barium-titanate based |
| Temperature behavior | Small, tightly controlled change | Greater change over the rated temperature range |
| DC-bias sensitivity | Generally much lower | Can be significant and must be checked on the individual part’s curves |
| Aging | Very low compared with Class 2 | Capacitance changes gradually with time |
| Typical circuit roles | RF matching, resonators, timing and precision tuning | Bypass, decoupling, filtering and power-rail smoothing |
| Capacitance available in a comparable package | Lower | Much higher |
TDK and Murata both describe this as a deliberate engineering trade-off. Class 1 is selected when predictable electrical behavior is more important than maximum capacitance density. Class 2 is selected when the circuit benefits from a large nominal value in a small package and can tolerate, or compensate for, changing capacitance.
What X5R and X7R actually specify
The letters and numbers in an EIA dielectric code describe a temperature classification. They do not describe every condition that can alter capacitance.
X7R
KYOCERA AVX specifies X7R as an EIA Class II dielectric whose capacitance variation is within ±15% from -55°C to +125°C. That figure is a temperature-variation specification under the manufacturer’s stated test conditions. It is not a guarantee that the part will remain within ±15% after DC bias, frequency effects and aging are included.

X5R
X5R is also a Class II dielectric, with a different rated temperature span. The code tells you the temperature category; it does not tell you the DC-bias curve or the exact capacitance loss at your operating voltage. Those details belong to the specific manufacturer part number and datasheet.
C0G/NP0
C0G, also called NP0, is a Class 1 dielectric intended for high stability. It is commonly used in resonant, tuning and RF matching networks where a changing capacitance would shift frequency or impedance. Its lower dielectric constant generally means less capacitance than an X5R or X7R part of similar size.
When comparing dielectric codes, keep the temperature classification separate from the other specifications. A part can meet its X7R temperature limit and still lose additional capacitance when DC voltage is applied.

Class 2 ceramics are nonlinear dielectrics. Applying a DC voltage creates an electric field inside the ceramic. As the field increases, the material’s incremental response changes, so the measured small-signal capacitance falls from its zero-bias value. This behavior is called DC-bias dependence or voltage coefficient.

Datasheet nominal capacitance is commonly measured with a small AC test signal at little or no DC bias. Your circuit may apply a steady voltage that is a large fraction of the capacitor’s rated voltage. The capacitance available to ripple and transient signals at that operating point can therefore be lower than the printed value.
The amount of reduction depends on the exact ceramic formulation, rated voltage, capacitance value, package and applied voltage. Two X7R capacitors with the same nominal capacitance and voltage rating can have different DC-bias curves. A larger case or a higher voltage rating may retain more effective capacitance, but that is not a universal rule; use the manufacturer’s curve for the selected part.
How to evaluate effective capacitance
- Identify the highest and lowest DC voltage that will appear across the capacitor, including startup, load dump or converter overshoot where relevant.
- Find the manufacturer’s capacitance-versus-DC-bias graph or data table for the exact part number, case size and rated voltage.
- Read the remaining capacitance at the circuit’s worst-case operating voltage.
- Multiply that value by the expected temperature and aging allowances if the design requires a guaranteed minimum.
- Check that the resulting effective capacitance, rather than the nominal marking, meets the circuit requirement.
Temperature, frequency and aging effects
Temperature
Class 2 capacitance changes with temperature. TDK notes that capacitance typically decreases as temperature rises, with behavior around the barium-titanate Curie point producing more complex effects. Manufacturers adjust proprietary formulations to shape the temperature curve, so one family label does not replace the individual part’s graph.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe X7R ±15% classification covers the specified temperature range, but it must not be read as an all-condition tolerance. DC bias and frequency are separate influences.

Frequency
Capacitance is measured at a stated test frequency and signal level. A capacitor used for a high-frequency decoupling path may show a different effective impedance than its nominal capacitance suggests. Review the datasheet’s impedance, dissipation-factor or capacitance-versus-frequency information when the circuit operates at high frequency.
Aging
Class 2 ceramics exhibit aging: capacitance gradually changes with elapsed time, usually described over logarithmic time intervals. The initial value after manufacture or a heat treatment is not necessarily the value months or years later. Precision timing or tuning circuits should account for this behavior or use a Class 1 dielectric.

Bypass and decoupling
For digital IC supply pins and general rail decoupling, an X5R or X7R MLCC is often appropriate because high nominal capacitance fits close to the load. Verify the effective capacitance at the rail voltage and the capacitor’s impedance at the frequencies that matter to the circuit.

Power-rail smoothing and filtering
Class 2 parts are useful where the design needs substantial capacitance in limited board space. Check ripple current, voltage rating, temperature range and DC-bias performance. If the rail operates near the capacitor’s voltage rating, select a part whose effective capacitance remains adequate rather than relying on the nominal value.
RF matching, resonators and tuning
Use a Class 1 C0G/NP0 part when capacitance stability, low loss and predictable frequency behavior are central to the circuit. An X7R’s larger nominal value does not compensate for its voltage, temperature and aging dependence in a precision resonant network.
A practical selection workflow
- Define the electrical job. Decide whether the capacitor is providing bulk energy storage, high-frequency bypass, a filter pole, an RF matching value or a timing element.
- Set the required effective capacitance. State the minimum value needed under the worst-case DC voltage, temperature and frequency—not just at room temperature and zero bias.
- Choose a dielectric class. Start with C0G/NP0 for precision and RF stability; consider X5R or X7R when compact, high capacitance is the priority.
- Check voltage rating. Compare the maximum continuous and transient voltage with the rated voltage, then inspect the DC-bias curve at the actual operating point.
- Check temperature and aging. Confirm the rated temperature span and include the manufacturer’s stated aging behavior where long-term accuracy matters.
- Check package and construction. Package size affects available capacitance and may affect the DC-bias response. Confirm dimensions, termination style and assembly compatibility.
- Verify frequency behavior. Use impedance or capacitance data at the circuit’s operating frequency, especially for switching converters and RF paths.
- Record the exact part number. Do not substitute another dielectric, package or voltage rating merely because the printed capacitance is the same.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Reading X7R as an all-conditions ±15% tolerance | The ±15% figure refers to the specified temperature range, not DC bias, frequency and aging combined. | Apply the separate voltage, frequency and aging data from the exact datasheet. |
| Using the marked capacitance as the operating value | Class 2 capacitance can fall under DC bias. | Design from the effective capacitance at the circuit voltage. |
| Replacing C0G with X7R in a resonator | The larger value may drift with voltage, temperature and time, shifting the tuned frequency. | Use C0G/NP0 or recalculate the circuit with quantified stability limits. |
| Comparing only nominal capacitance and price | Two parts with the same marking can have different bias curves and temperature performance. | Compare dielectric, voltage rating, case size, tolerance and manufacturer curves. |
| Ignoring startup or transient voltage | A transient can produce more DC-bias loss or exceed the rating. | Evaluate the full voltage waveform and include an appropriate margin. |
| Assuming a generic assortment is production-qualified | Assortments may mix dielectric classes, tolerances and voltage ratings. | Use a documented, exact part number for production and verify its datasheet. |
What to look for in the datasheet
- Dielectric designation, such as C0G, X5R or X7R.
- Nominal capacitance and tolerance at the stated test conditions.
- Rated voltage and any derating guidance.
- Capacitance-versus-DC-bias curves for the exact case and voltage rating.
- Capacitance variation over temperature.
- Frequency, test-voltage and signal-level conditions used for the specifications.
- Aging or capacitance-drift information for Class 2 material.
- Package dimensions and the manufacturer’s recommended land pattern.
Manufacturer application notes from Murata and TDK emphasize that dielectric family names are useful starting points, while the individual part’s curves determine suitability. KYOCERA AVX’s X7R specification illustrates the same principle: a clearly defined temperature limit coexists with separate electrical dependencies.
Bottom line
High permittivity is the reason a ceramic capacitor can deliver high capacitance in a compact package. In practice, it usually means a Class 2 dielectric such as X5R or X7R, often barium-titanate based. The same material behavior that increases capacitance also makes the value sensitive to DC voltage, temperature, frequency and aging. Choose C0G/NP0 when stability is the circuit’s priority; choose X5R or X7R for compact bypass, smoothing and decoupling, but size the part using its effective capacitance under real operating conditions.
