HDTV display modes describe a video picture by its active vertical line count and how those lines are scanned. In 720p, 720 active picture lines are shown progressively; in 1080i, 1080 active lines are transmitted as interlaced fields. The number describes line count; the letter describes scan method.
What does HDTV mean?
HDTV can mean a family of high-definition picture formats, or a complete television system with specified reception and display capabilities. The distinction matters because a broad description of picture quality is not the same thing as a product or regulatory checklist.

The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) defines HDTV in broad picture terms: “High-definition television has a resolution of approximately twice that of conventional television in both the horizontal (H) and vertical (V) dimensions and a picture aspect ratio (HxV) of 16:9.” ATSC glossary
In U.S. regulatory discussions, HDTV has also been described as a system involving a receiver, 16:9 display capability, minimum resolution formats, and audio capabilities. The FCC’s 2001 order recorded an industry and ATSC definition that included 720p, 1080i, or higher vertical resolution and Dolby Digital audio; a USITC report around 2010 describes a system-oriented definition including ATSC terrestrial reception and decoding. These are historical U.S. examples, not universal current certification rules. FCC order; USITC report

What do 720p and 1080i mean?
The number is the count of active vertical picture lines. The suffix indicates whether a complete picture is scanned progressively or split into interlaced fields.
| Label | Active vertical lines | Scan method | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | 720 | Progressive | Lines for a complete picture are presented in sequence. |
| 1080i | 1080 | Interlaced | Odd and even lines are sent in separate fields that combine into a frame. |
| 1080p | 1080 | Progressive | The notation indicates 1080-line progressive scanning; exact rates and availability depend on the format and context. |
The FCC’s explanation of scanning says progressive lines are presented successively from top to bottom, with a complete image in each frame. Interlaced scanning sends odd-numbered and even-numbered lines as separate fields; together, the fields form a frame. A Spanish government HDTV explainer likewise describes the odd/even field distinction in 1080i. FCC order; Spanish government HDTV explainer

Does 1080i look better than 720p?
Not necessarily. 1080i has more active vertical lines than 720p, but it uses interlaced scanning while 720p uses progressive scanning. Line count alone does not establish which picture will look better: the format and the source-and-display context both matter. The cited definitions explain the formats, but do not establish a universal picture-quality winner.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow should you read an HDTV mode label?
- Read the number as the active vertical line count, such as 720 or 1080.
- Read “p” as progressive scanning, in which the lines of a complete picture are presented in sequence.
- Read “i” as interlaced scanning, in which odd and even lines are sent in separate fields.
- Keep the context in view: a mode label describes a picture format, while some definitions of HDTV describe a broader receiver-and-display system.
What the mode labels do not tell you
The label alone does not specify every detail of a video format, nor does it guarantee a particular visual result across all sources and displays. The primary sources cited here establish the basic 720p and 1080i meanings and the 1080p notation, but they do not provide a current, exhaustive table of all resolutions, frame-rate variants, and regional broadcast allowances.
