On a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, HDR10 and Dolby Vision describe the picture, while Dolby Atmos describes the sound. “4K” refers to resolution, not to either of those formats. To get a feature, the disc, player, display or audio equipment must support it.
What the three labels mean
| Label | What it describes | Key distinction | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDR10 | HDR video | Uses static metadata for the program | HDR10 support on the disc and display |
| Dolby Vision | HDR video | Can use dynamic metadata scene by scene and, in some workflows, frame by frame | Dolby Vision support across the disc, player, and display |
| Dolby Atmos | Immersive audio | Uses spatial information for audio objects, including possible height placement | An Atmos soundtrack on that edition and compatible playback equipment |
How HDR10 and Dolby Vision differ
HDR10: static metadata
HDR means high dynamic range: a way of presenting a wider range of brightness and color than standard dynamic range. HDR10 uses static metadata, meaning the same program-level values apply throughout the content. Dolby’s technical explanation identifies MaxCLL and MaxFALL as values that together form this static metadata: Dolby’s HDR metadata guidance.

“Static” describes how metadata is applied; it does not mean the picture itself stays unchanged or that HDR10 cannot produce HDR imagery.
Dolby Vision: dynamic metadata
Dolby Vision is Dolby’s HDR format. Dolby says its dynamic metadata can provide settings optimized for individual scenes; professional guidance describes it as shot-based or, in some cases, frame-based. The intent is to guide image mapping to the content and the display’s capabilities. The outcome still depends on the source, player, connection, settings, and television. That format capability does not establish that every Dolby Vision disc will look better on every television. The mastering and display matter, and there is no universal result implied by the label.
What Dolby Atmos means for the soundtrack
Dolby Atmos is an audio format, not an HDR or picture format. Dolby describes an audio object as sound paired with information about its position in space, represented with X, Y, and Z coordinates. Compatible equipment can use that positioning to place sounds around or above the listener. The Blu-ray Disc Association includes Dolby Atmos among the object-based immersive audio formats supported by Ultra HD Blu-ray. See Dolby’s Atmos explanation and the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Ultra HD overview.

An Atmos label does not specify one required speaker count, nor does it mean ceiling speakers are mandatory in every setup. Dolby says an Atmos object-based experience can also be derived for conventional headphones; the rendering depends on the playback equipment.

What “4K” tells you—and what it does not
Ultra HD Blu-ray supports up to 3,840 × 2,160 pixels, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Ultra HD FAQ (accessed 2026). That is the resolution label. It does not tell you whether a particular disc includes HDR10, Dolby Vision, or an Atmos soundtrack.

The association also lists capabilities including playback at up to 60 frames per second and, on its Ultra HD benefits page (accessed 2026), more than 75% of the visible color spectrum. Those are format-level figures published by the association, not promises that each title uses the maximum resolution, frame rate, color range, or other capability.
How to check whether your setup can use each format
- Check the exact disc edition. Look for the HDR and soundtrack formats on the packaging or the studio’s official release details. Features vary by title and edition; one Blu-ray Disc Association release announcement, for Aquaman, lists both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
- Confirm the player can read Ultra HD Blu-ray. A standard Blu-ray player cannot play an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. Ultra HD Blu-ray players also play standard Blu-ray content; the association says they can convert HDR to SDR to match a connected HDTV’s capabilities. See its backwards-compatibility FAQ.
- For Dolby Vision, verify the full video path. Check support on the disc edition, player, and television, along with the connection and device settings. A 4K-capable TV or player does not by itself establish Dolby Vision support. Consult the manuals for your specific models.
- For Atmos, verify the full audio path. Confirm the edition includes an Atmos track and that the player and receiver or soundbar can pass and render the required audio signal. Check the equipment manuals for supported formats and settings.
Why logos do not guarantee the same experience
A format label identifies a capability, not a uniform result. Picture depends on the source and mastering as well as the player and display; sound depends on the soundtrack and how compatible equipment renders it. A television that supports Dolby Vision does not make a disc’s Atmos track available, and an Atmos-capable soundbar does not change the disc’s HDR format.
