What HDR on a Monitor Really Tells You

A monitor can accept an HDR10 signal without meeting a tested standard for how well it displays HDR. To judge what its HDR label means, check whether the exact model is certified under VESA DisplayHDR, note the certification tier and test version, and look beyond peak brightness to contrast, black levels, color and dimming.

What does HDR mean on a monitor?

“HDR” can describe different things. HDR10 is a signal format: it describes how compatible content is delivered. VESA DisplayHDR is a separate performance specification that tests a display against requirements for areas including luminance, color, contrast, bit depth and dimming. A monitor that accepts HDR10 input is not automatically certified to DisplayHDR or guaranteed to produce a particular level of HDR performance. VESA explains the distinction.

A generic HDR label—and a label such as “HDR-400”—does not establish that a product passed VESA certification. VESA’s named tier is DisplayHDR 400, and the organization advises buyers to verify a product in its overview and certified-products list. A monitor without certification may still accept or display an HDR signal; the label alone simply does not tell you how it performs against a defined test.

How to check a monitor’s HDR claim

  1. Find the complete model number. Include the regional or family suffix shown on the monitor, box or manufacturer’s specification page. Similar names do not prove that every model in a range has the same certification.
  2. Search VESA’s certified-products list. Look for the exact model at displayhdr.org/certified-products. Do not assume a neighboring model or family member is certified unless the listing covers it.
  3. Record the full certification name and CTS version. Note whether the product is listed as DisplayHDR or DisplayHDR True Black, the tier number, and the CTS version shown.
  4. Compare the criteria that affect the picture. Check the tier’s luminance, color, contrast and black-level requirements, then read the monitor’s specifications for its dimming approach. A peak-brightness figure is only one part of the standard.
  5. Check the whole playback chain. Confirm that the source device, connection, operating system and content support the HDR mode you want. For Windows, see Microsoft’s HDR guidance for supported display and connection requirements and the relevant Settings controls.

If Windows does not show a certification entry, Microsoft says that may mean the display lacks an HDR certification or that the manufacturer has not published the information. Check both the manufacturer’s specifications and VESA’s list rather than treating the Windows status alone as conclusive.

What a DisplayHDR tier tells you—and what it does not

A tier number is shorthand for a suite of requirements, not a complete prediction of how every monitor at that tier will look. VESA’s performance criteria include peak luminance, DCI-P3 color coverage, static contrast and maximum black-level luminance. CTS 1.2 also includes tests for bit depth, active dimming, color accuracy, black crush, black levels and subtitle flicker.

For example, VESA’s displayed CTS 1.2 summary sets DisplayHDR 400 criteria of 400 cd/m² minimum peak luminance, 90% DCI-P3 coverage, 1,300:1 static contrast and 0.4 cd/m² maximum black-level luminance. For DisplayHDR 500, the corresponding listed criteria are 500 cd/m², 95% DCI-P3, 7,000:1 and 0.1 cd/m². These are requirements in the standard—not independent measurements of a particular monitor, nor a complete account of every test or viewing condition.

Version matters as well as tier. VESA released CTS 1.2 on May 7, 2024, tightening luminance, gamut and bit-depth requirements and adding tests for color accuracy, contrast, black levels and subtitle flicker. VESA allowed certification under CTS 1.1 through the end of May 2025; that transition period has passed. Since the certified-products list records CTS versions, compare the version attached to the exact model rather than relying on the tier name alone. VESA’s announcement describes the update.

Why dimming and panel type matter

Peak brightness cannot tell you on its own how a display handles dark scenes. An LCD uses a backlight. With global dimming, the backlight is treated as one zone; local dimming divides it into sections that can be controlled separately. Full-array local dimming places LEDs behind the panel in a two-dimensional arrangement.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

OLED displays work differently: they do not use an LCD backlight, and each pixel emits light and can be controlled individually. These approaches affect black levels and contrast. VESA has separate DisplayHDR True Black tiers for emissive displays, so compare the appropriate certification and criteria rather than treating all tier names as interchangeable. VESA’s FAQ explains the display technologies.

What to check for HDR on Windows

The monitor is only one part of the setup: the source, connection, operating-system settings and content must also support the desired HDR mode. Microsoft’s guidance is specific to Windows, not a universal guarantee of image quality. It recommends HDR-certified displays and specifically advises looking for DisplayHDR 1.2 and tier 500 or higher. Treat that as Microsoft’s Windows guidance, not a rule that determines whether every monitor is worthwhile for every use.

Certification is useful evidence of performance against a named standard. It does not establish that two certified monitors will look identical, suit every viewer or offer the same value; those judgments require exact-model information and, for image-quality comparisons, appropriate measurements or testing.
