For 4K gaming at 120Hz, buy a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) defines this category for systems supporting up to 48Gbps and 4K120 formats. Check for the official certification label and scan its QR code before buying. The console or PC, display input, and every device between them must also support 4K at 120Hz; a cable cannot add capabilities that another component lacks.
The right cable category for 4K 120Hz
The wording on the package matters more than a vague claim such as “8K,” “gaming,” or “HDMI 2.1.” Specify Ultra High Speed HDMI, the official cable category associated with up to 48Gbps and formats including 4K at 120Hz. HDMI LA says the category was introduced with the HDMI 2.1 specification and entered the market in 2020. See the current category guidance at HDMI LA’s Ultra High Speed HDMI cable page.

Buy the length that reaches your devices without unnecessary slack, then verify that exact packaged model. Certification applies to cable models and lengths, so a label for one length should not be treated as proof for every length sold under a similar name.

A certified cable is a required link, not a guarantee that a game will output 4K120. The source device must have an output that supports the target format, the television or monitor must have a compatible input, and any receiver, soundbar, switch, capture device, adapter, or wall-plate connection in between can become the limiting component. HDMI LA’s cable specifications describe cable capability; they do not certify a particular console, graphics card, display, game, or installation.

HDMI cable categories compared
| Official category | HDMI LA stated capability | What it means for a 4K120 setup |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra High Speed HDMI | Up to 48Gbps; supports formats including 4K120 and 8K60; covered by an official certification and scan-verifiable label. | The category to specify for a 4K/120Hz gaming connection. |
| Premium High Speed HDMI | Up to 18Gbps; certified for 4K/Ultra HD formats such as 4K60, HDR, and expanded color spaces. | A separate lower-bandwidth category. Do not choose it when 4K120 is the requirement. |
| Ultra96 HDMI | Up to 96Gbps; introduced with HDMI 2.2 for higher-bandwidth formats. | Not necessary for ordinary 4K120. It is a newer category, not a prerequisite for this target. |
These are cable-category specifications, not promises about a complete system. HDMI LA’s overview of cable types is available at HDMI Cables — Different Cable Types. Because HDMI 2.2 and Ultra96 now appear in current guidance, “HDMI 2.1 cable” is too imprecise to use as your only buying criterion. Look for the complete official cable name and certification label.
How to verify that an Ultra High Speed cable is certified
1. Find the official name
The package should identify the product as an Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. Marketing language such as “high speed,” “premium,” “4K,” or “8K” is not a substitute for that category name. HDMI LA’s certification program is mandatory for products sold under the official Ultra High Speed HDMI designation.

2. Inspect the certification label
Certified cables must carry the official Ultra High Speed HDMI certification label on each package or unit of sale. The label is designed to be checked rather than trusted solely from a retailer’s description. The cable’s outer jacket must also show the official cable name markings.
3. Scan the QR code
Use a standard QR-code app on the package label. The scan should identify the certified cable model; compare the result with the brand, model, and length printed on the package. If the QR code does not resolve to an HDMI LA verification result, or the result identifies a different model or length, do not assume the cable is certified.

4. Match the exact length
Certification records identify cable model and length. Purchase a length suited to your room and verify that the packaged length matches the scan. The sources do not establish a universal maximum length for every Ultra High Speed cable, so avoid rules claiming that all cables work up to one fixed distance.
For an example of what a verification record looks like, HDMI LA’s official scan result identifies Canare HDM07U — 7 meters as an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. That record verifies the category, model, and length shown there; it is not a claim that the cable is the best choice, cheapest option, or currently in stock.

Set up a 4K 120Hz connection
- Confirm the source specification. Read the manual or support page for your exact console, graphics card, or computer. Confirm that its HDMI output supports 4K at 120Hz.
- Confirm the display input. Check the exact HDMI input on your television or monitor and verify that it accepts 4K120. Do not rely only on the display’s maximum resolution.
- Remove possible bottlenecks. Disconnect receivers, soundbars, switches, capture hardware, adapters, and wall plates. Connect the source directly to the compatible display input while diagnosing the setup.
- Connect the certified cable. Use the verified Ultra High Speed cable and the shortest practical route that fits the installation. Ensure both plugs are fully seated.
- Choose the 4K/120 mode in the device menus. Use the output and display settings documented for your particular source and display. Menu names vary by model, so follow those manuals rather than applying a generic path.
- Check the reported signal. Use the display’s information screen or the source’s output-status page, if provided, to confirm the negotiated resolution and refresh rate. A 4K image alone does not prove that the link is running at 120Hz.
- Reconnect intermediates one at a time. If the direct connection works, insert the receiver, soundbar, switch, or adapter individually. When 4K120 stops working, the last component added is the first compatibility candidate to investigate.
Troubleshoot a missing 4K120 option or unstable picture
| Symptom | Likely checkpoint | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 4K is available but 120Hz is not | Source output, display input, or an intermediate device does not support the target mode. | Verify the exact port specifications, test a direct source-to-display connection, and confirm the cable’s Ultra High Speed label and scan result. |
| The display reports a lower resolution or refresh rate | The devices negotiated a mode supported by the weakest link. | Remove switches, receivers, adapters, and wall plates; try another documented compatible input; then reconnect components individually. |
| The picture drops out or flickers | Loose plugs, a damaged cable, a marginal installation, or an incompatible component. | Reseat both ends, test the verified cable directly, use a practical shorter route, and replace the cable if the direct test still fails. |
| A retailer listing says “HDMI 2.1” but has no official label | The listing uses an ambiguous specification. | Ask for the official Ultra High Speed HDMI certification label and QR-verifiable model information instead of relying on the version shorthand. |
| A game does not run at 120 frames per second | Game or hardware rendering performance, not necessarily the cable. | Separate the display’s accepted 4K120 signal from the game’s actual frame rate and consult the game and hardware documentation. |
How much cable length should you buy?
Measure the real path around furniture, stands, or a wall conduit and choose enough length to avoid sharp tension or strain. Do not buy an unnecessarily long cable solely for future-proofing, but do not bend a short cable tightly to make it reach. Because HDMI LA’s certification records are tied to model and length, scan the exact package you intend to install.
There is no single maximum distance established by the cited HDMI LA material for all certified Ultra High Speed cables. If your layout requires a long run, judge the specific certified model and the installation method rather than applying a universal distance claim. For troubleshooting, first use a direct, uncomplicated connection at a practical length; only then evaluate the permanent route.

- Backward compatible with earlier versions of HDMI and can be used with any HDMI devices.
Do you need an HDMI 2.2 or Ultra96 cable?
No—not for the stated requirement of 4K at 120Hz. HDMI LA’s current guidance lists Ultra96 HDMI, with up to 96Gbps, as a newer HDMI 2.2 category for higher-bandwidth formats. Ultra High Speed remains the 48Gbps category that covers 4K120. Buying Ultra96 solely because it has a larger bandwidth number does not upgrade a console, PC, display, receiver, or game, and the cited material does not establish that ordinary 4K120 systems require it. See the HDMI 2.2 Specification Technology Overview for the current version context.
