Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The short answer: an HDMI certification label is useful only when it is the official label for the cable category and a scan of the physical package returns the same brand, model, length and cable type that you are being offered. For Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 HDMI cables, HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) guidance also requires the official cable name to be printed on the cable jacket. A listing that merely says “8K” or “48 Gbps,” or shows a copied label image, is not proof of certification.
The checks below let you verify a cable before buying or installing it, understand why labels look different, and choose a category that matches your source device and display.

What an HDMI certification label actually means
An HDMI certification label identifies a cable that belongs to a defined HDMI cable category and has passed the testing required for that program. HDMI LA uses the labels to reduce confusion between similar-sounding cable names, help trace packages to their source, and give buyers a way to verify a specific product record.

Certification is tied to the registered brand, model and length, not to a seller’s general claim that all of its cables are “8K” or “high bandwidth.” A label is meaningful when the physical label scans successfully and the returned details match the exact item in the package or listing.

Certification is different from a feature claim
Terms such as “8K,” “48 Gbps,” HDR, gaming, or a list of supported resolutions are marketing claims until you verify the cable’s certification record. A reseller can describe a cable with those terms without demonstrating that the particular model and length completed the applicable HDMI testing. The official label and its scan result are the identity check; the feature list is not a substitute for it.
What a successful scan tells you
HDMI LA’s verification flow reports identifying fields such as the brand, model, cable type and length, along with the certification registration. Compare every field with the package and with the online offer. A result for a different model or a different length does not validate the cable you are holding, even if the brand name is the same.
For Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 products, the cable’s official name must also be printed on the jacket. Look for the wording that identifies the category, rather than relying on a logo printed only in a product photograph.
HDMI cable categories and their stated capabilities
Choose the category by comparing your source device, display, resolution, refresh rate and other HDMI functions with the category’s stated capability. The figures below are HDMI LA category descriptions; they are not independent tests of an arbitrary marketplace listing.

| Category | HDMI LA stated capability | Identification requirements | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium High Speed HDMI Cable | High Speed cable tested for full 18 Gbps performance. Examples include 4K at 60 Hz, HDR and expanded colour spaces including BT.2020. | Use the official Premium High Speed certification label on the package. HDMI LA notes that a smaller label size took effect in February 2026; the original size remains valid. | Appropriate when your equipment needs the functions covered by the Premium High Speed program. Verify the exact product record rather than assuming every “High Speed” cable is Premium certified. |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable | Up to 48 Gbps, with formats including 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz. | The package must carry the official Ultra High Speed label, the scan must match the product, and “Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable” must be printed on the jacket. | Consider it for high-refresh 4K, 8K or other equipment whose required signal fits this category. The 48 Gbps figure is a category maximum, not a guarantee that every listing is genuine. |
| Ultra96 HDMI Cable | HDMI LA places Ultra96 alongside Ultra High Speed in its current HDMI 2.2 label guidance. The exact capabilities of an individual cable must be checked in its certification record. | The corresponding Ultra96 label is required on the package, and “Ultra96 HDMI Cable” must be printed on the jacket. | Use the scan result and the requirements of your equipment. Do not infer a particular model’s complete feature set from a reseller’s wording alone. |
A higher printed bandwidth number is not automatically useful. If both your source and display operate within a lower category, moving to a higher category may not change the picture. Conversely, a cable that lacks the category your devices require can prevent the desired resolution, refresh rate or HDR mode from being selected.
How to verify an HDMI cable before you trust it
Perform the following checks on the physical package and cable. Do not treat a product-page image as a replacement for the label in your possession.
- Find the package label. Look for the official certification label for the claimed category. For Ultra High Speed and Ultra96, the package should display the required category name and label design.
- Identify which label generation you have. Gen 1 and Gen 2 Ultra High Speed labels can both be legitimate. Their scanning methods and visual elements differ, so do not reject a label solely because it does not look like a newer example.
- Use the scanning method specified for that label. HDMI LA’s transition guidance says the two generations use different scanning apps. Gen 2 replaces the earlier data matrix with a QR code and changes the hologram. Follow the instructions that apply to the label in front of you.
- Scan the physical label, not a screenshot. A copied graphic on a web page can be reused on many listings. The verification result must come from the label attached to the package you will receive or have received.
- Match every identity field. Compare the returned brand, model, length, cable type and certification result with the printed package, the cable and the exact listing. A mismatch in length is significant: certification for one registered length does not establish certification for another.
- Read the jacket. Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 cables should have the official cable name printed on the cable jacket. If the package claims one of those categories but the jacket has no corresponding name, pause the purchase and seek clarification.
- Resolve uncertainty with HDMI LA. If the scan raises a question about the brand or model, use the contact address shown on HDMI LA’s verification page. Keep photographs of the label, package and jacket, plus the listing details, so the question concerns the exact item.
A website verification banner can be an optional program add-on. When a banner is present, it may display the brand, model and length, but its presence on a seller’s page does not remove the need to verify the physical label.
Why genuine labels can look different
Ultra High Speed Gen 1 and Gen 2
HDMI LA says Gen 1 labels already in the market continue to be supported for the immediate future. Gen 2 introduces a QR code where Gen 1 used a data matrix and changes the anti-counterfeit hologram. Because both generations can be valid, visual comparison alone cannot establish that a cable is fake. Use the scanning app and procedure associated with the generation on the package.
If a scan fails, first confirm that you selected the correct app and that the code is unobstructed. A generation mismatch can produce a procedural failure that says nothing about the cable’s authenticity.

Premium High Speed label size
HDMI LA’s Premium HDMI Cable page says a smaller label became effective in February 2026 and that the original label size remains valid. A package with the older size is therefore not automatically counterfeit. Check the current program guidance and verify the label record.
How fake or misleading claims commonly appear
No authoritative statistic establishes what percentage of listings carry fake claims, so treat each offer individually. The following patterns are warning signs, not automatic proof of fraud:
Recommended Free Tools
- Only a bandwidth or resolution headline: “48 Gbps,” “8K,” or “4K 120” without a verifiable category label and matching record.
- A label visible only in a stock image: the photograph may not depict the package or model that will ship.
- Brand-level assurances: a seller says its entire range is certified but supplies no model- and length-specific verification.
- Incomplete identity details: the listing omits the exact model or length, making a scan result impossible to compare.
- Category-name mixing: “Ultra,” “2.1,” “8K ready” or other informal wording appears where the official category name should be.
- Jacket inconsistency: the package claims Ultra High Speed or Ultra96, but the cable jacket does not carry the required official name.
- Reused scans or screenshots: a seller shows a verification result for a different cable, a different length or a different brand.
These checks protect against both deliberate counterfeiting and ordinary listing errors. A genuine brand can still ship the wrong length or use an outdated product photo, so identity matching remains necessary.
Match the category to your equipment
Start with the complete signal path: source device, cable, receiver or switch if present, and display. The weakest component or setting can limit the mode you obtain. Read the manuals or on-screen specifications for the actual resolution, refresh rate, HDR and colour requirements rather than selecting a cable from a headline number alone.

Examples of sensible matching
- 4K at 60 Hz with HDR: HDMI LA lists these as examples for Premium High Speed’s 18 Gbps certification. Verify a Premium High Speed record when that is the category your equipment calls for.
- 4K at 120 Hz: HDMI LA lists this among Ultra High Speed formats. Check for the official Ultra High Speed label, a matching scan and the printed jacket name.
- 8K at 60 Hz: also listed in the Ultra High Speed category description. Confirm that the source and display support the mode and that the cable’s registered identity matches.
- Ultra96 equipment: use the Ultra96 label and scan to identify the exact cable. Do not assume that a reseller’s “HDMI 2.2” wording describes every capability of that model.
Certification identifies the cable category; it does not upgrade a source or display that lacks a feature. A certified cable cannot make a non-8K display produce 8K, and it cannot add a refresh rate that the source does not output.
A safer buying workflow
- Write down your requirements. Record the source and display models, target resolution, refresh rate, HDR or colour features, and any receiver or switch in between.
- Select the category that covers those requirements. Use HDMI LA’s category descriptions as a starting point, not a reason to buy the highest number automatically.
- Require an exact model and length in the offer. If the listing uses a family name with several lengths, ask which registered model will ship.
- Inspect the package on arrival. Photograph the label before opening it, especially when the purchase was made online.
- Scan and compare. Confirm brand, model, length, cable type and certification result. Save the result with your receipt.
- Check the jacket name. This is required for Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 products.
- Test the intended mode. Set the source and display to the required resolution and refresh rate, then confirm the mode remains stable. A successful display test does not replace certification verification; it is a practical check that your complete system works.
What to do when verification does not work
The code will not scan
Clean the package surface, use the app specified for the label generation, and try again in good light. Make sure you are scanning the physical label rather than a printed copy or a screen image. If the code remains unreadable, do not treat the cable as verified; ask the seller for a replacement or contact HDMI LA through the address on its verification page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The scan returns a different model or length
Stop before installing the cable. Certification is tied to the returned identity fields. Compare the package, jacket and listing for a packing error, then request the exact registered item or a refund. A result for a longer or shorter version is not interchangeable evidence.
The package label scans but the jacket name is missing
For Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 products, the jacket marking is part of HDMI LA’s identification guidance. Photograph the omission and ask the seller or manufacturer to explain it. Do not rely on the label alone while the discrepancy is unresolved.

The listing shows a different label design
Check whether the package is Gen 1 or Gen 2 and use the corresponding scan procedure. The QR-versus-data-matrix difference and hologram update are expected generation changes. If the correct procedure still produces no matching record, treat the offer as unverified.
The scan is valid but the expected video mode is unavailable
Recheck the source and display specifications, input-port settings, receiver or switch limits, and display-menu options. Certification confirms the cable’s registered category; it does not prove that every device in the chain supports every format listed for that category.
What certification does—and does not—establish
It establishes
- The cable is associated with a registered HDMI category and product identity when the official scan matches.
- The relevant program testing was completed through the required process. Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 models must pass certification testing at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center.
- The package and, where required, jacket markings follow HDMI LA’s identification guidance.
It does not establish
- That a random listing is genuine merely because its description contains the right words.
- That a copied logo, banner or product photograph belongs to the unit you will receive.
- That every source, display, receiver and switch in your setup supports the cable category’s example formats.
- That a longer or differently packaged version shares the same registration.
- That the cable is free from installation damage or manufacturing defects after purchase.
Keeping this distinction clear prevents two opposite mistakes: rejecting a legitimate older-generation label because it looks unfamiliar, and accepting an unverified listing because its marketing sounds current.
Quick verification checklist
- Is the official category label physically present on the package?
- Did you use the scan method for that label generation?
- Do the returned brand, model, cable type and length exactly match the offer?
- Is the required Ultra High Speed or Ultra96 name printed on the jacket?
- Are you evaluating the source, display and any intermediate equipment as a complete signal path?
- Have you saved the scan result and package photographs?
- If anything conflicts, have you paused installation and contacted the seller or HDMI LA?
Following this sequence turns a vague “8K cable” claim into a checkable product identity. The label is evidence only when the physical scan and the cable markings agree with the exact item you plan to use.
