HDMI 2.1 is not a guarantee that a TV has every feature associated with the standard. HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) treats capabilities such as eARC, VRR and 4K at 120 Hz as optional features that manufacturers must identify individually. When comparing televisions, verify the exact model, the specific HDMI input, the supported resolution and refresh rate, and compatibility with your console, PC or audio system.
eARC is the audio-return connection from a TV to a soundbar or AV receiver. VRR synchronizes the TV’s refresh timing with changing game frame rates. HDMI 2.1 is the specification family that can include these capabilities, but the label alone does not tell you which ones are implemented.

HDMI 2.1, eARC and VRR in plain language
HDMI 2.1 is a menu of capabilities, not a single performance grade
HDMI 2.1 is a version of the HDMI specification. It defines a collection of possible improvements, including higher-bandwidth video modes, variable refresh rate and enhanced audio return. A television can implement some of those capabilities without implementing all of them.
HDMI LA’s marketing guidance says that if a manufacturer promotes compliance with the HDMI 2.1 specification, it must list the HDMI 2.1 features supported by the product next to that messaging. In other words, “HDMI 2.1” should prompt you to read the feature list, not replace it. The official FAQ asks, “What does it mean when a manufacturer markets their product as an HDMI 2.1 product?” and its answer is based on feature disclosure rather than an assumption that every option is present: HDMI LA’s HDMI 2.1 product-marketing FAQ.

eARC is the TV-to-audio connection
eARC means Enhanced Audio Return Channel. It allows audio from sources connected to the TV—including broadcast, cable, satellite, streaming apps or another HDMI device—to travel back to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver over one HDMI cable. HDMI LA describes the path as sending audio that originates at the TV to the audio device through a single HDMI connection: official eARC explanation.
eARC is useful when you want the TV to act as the switching point for several sources or when you use built-in streaming apps. The format you actually hear depends on the complete chain: TV, HDMI cable, soundbar or receiver, speakers and source. HDMI LA lists high-bitrate formats such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS:X, along with support stated as up to 192 kHz, 24-bit audio and uncompressed 5.1, 7.1 and 32-channel audio. Those are capability limits, not a promise that every program or device will output them.
VRR synchronizes the screen with changing game frames
VRR stands for Variable Refresh Rate. A conventional display refreshes on a fixed schedule while a game may deliver frames at changing intervals. VRR lets the display timing follow that changing delivery, helping reduce judder and tearing when rendering speed fluctuates. HDMI LA’s VRR overview explains the feature’s purpose and its strongest use case, gaming: official VRR explanation.
VRR only helps when the source device supports a compatible VRR mode and the TV supports that mode on the input you are using. It is not a general picture-quality setting that improves every movie or television channel.

Why the HDMI 2.1 badge is not enough
Manufacturers can place HDMI 2.1 inputs on models with different combinations of features. One input may support a high-resolution, high-refresh signal while another is limited to lower bandwidth. eARC may be assigned to one labeled HDMI port, and VRR may be available only on selected inputs. A product page may also describe a feature without stating its full operating range.
For each model, look for four separate answers:
- Which HDMI inputs support the feature?
- What resolution and refresh rate does each relevant input accept?
- Which VRR format and operating range are supported?
- Which port is labeled eARC, and what audio formats are documented?
HDMI LA’s general feature pages explain what the standards can do, but they do not establish port-by-port behavior for a particular television. Use the manufacturer’s current specification sheet and user manual for that model.
Choose by your equipment and use case
| Use case | Specifications to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Console or PC gaming | Explicit VRR support; target resolution and refresh rate; the HDMI inputs that support that combination | VRR can reduce tearing and judder, while high-refresh operation is dependent on the TV input and source. |
| Soundbar or AV receiver | eARC on the TV and matching eARC support on the audio device; desired audio formats across the chain | The TV can return source and app audio over HDMI, but every device must support the format you intend to use. |
| High-bandwidth video connection | The required signal, cable class and official cable certification | An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is specified for up to 48 Gbps when that bandwidth is needed. |
How to check a TV before you buy it
- Write down the signal you actually need. Identify whether you need gaming VRR, 4K at 120 Hz, eARC audio, or simply standard 4K video. Do not start with the version number.
- Open the exact model’s technical specifications. Retailer summaries can omit port details. Use the manufacturer’s model page and download the manual when available.
- Map every HDMI input. Record which ports support the desired resolution and refresh rate, which support VRR, and which one is marked eARC. If the specification lists only a total number of HDMI 2.1 ports, it has not answered the port-level question.
- Check the source device. Confirm that your console or PC can output the resolution, refresh rate and VRR mode you plan to use. A TV cannot create a signal the source does not provide.
- Check the audio device separately. Verify eARC (not merely an HDMI connector) on the soundbar or receiver and confirm support for the audio formats you want.
- Check the cable requirement. If the connection needs the highest HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, select an officially certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. For a lower-bandwidth connection, your existing cable may be sufficient.
- Plan the wiring. Decide whether sources connect directly to the TV or through a receiver. The final path must preserve the required video and audio capabilities at every link.
What gamers should verify
VRR is a feature of the complete gaming path
For gaming, the relevant specification is not simply “HDMI 2.1.” Confirm that the TV supports VRR on the input where the console or PC will be connected, then check the supported resolution and maximum refresh rate for that same input. Also verify the source’s compatible VRR output mode. If any link lacks the required mode, the system will operate without VRR or fall back to a different signal.

4K at 120 Hz is a capability, not a guarantee
The HDMI Forum’s 2017 HDMI 2.1 announcement described 4K at 120 Hz as a capability of the specification: HDMI Forum announcement. That statement does not mean every HDMI 2.1 television accepts 4K/120 on every port. Treat it as a requirement to verify in the model’s input table, including whether the port supports the mode with VRR enabled.

What eARC changes in an audio setup
Typical connection
- Connect the soundbar or AV receiver’s eARC/ARC HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input labeled eARC.
- Enable HDMI-CEC and eARC in the TV and audio-device menus if the manuals require those settings.
- Set the TV’s digital-audio output to the desired automatic, passthrough or bitstream option, using the labels provided by that model.
- Play a known source and check the receiver or soundbar’s information display for the incoming format.
eARC can carry audio from the TV’s built-in apps and from devices connected to other TV inputs. The complete equipment chain still determines whether a particular soundtrack is delivered unchanged, converted to another format or reduced to a lower-quality signal. HDMI LA’s format figures describe what eARC can transport, not what a specific streaming app, disc, game or television model will output.
ARC and eARC are not interchangeable in every situation
A port labeled ARC may return basic television audio, but it does not by itself establish the higher-bitrate and multichannel capabilities associated with eARC. If lossless formats or the widest channel configurations matter to you, verify eARC on both ends and read the audio-format tables in both manuals.
Do you need a new HDMI cable?
Only buy a new cable when the intended connection requires capabilities your current cable cannot reliably provide. For high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 signals, look for the official Ultra High Speed HDMI certification label. HDMI LA specifies support for up to 48 Gbps and requires authorized testing; each length in a cable model line must be tested. Its certification guidance is available at Ultra High Speed HDMI cable certification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGeneric packaging that says “HDMI 2.1 cable” is less informative than the official certification label. Certification does not make every cable necessary for every TV: a setup using a lower-bandwidth signal may continue to work with an existing, properly functioning cable. Choose the cable for the signal, length and installation conditions, not for the TV badge alone.

Where HDMI 2.2 fits
HDMI LA now identifies HDMI 2.2 as the latest specification update. Its overview describes up to 96 Gbps, double the 48 Gbps associated with Ultra High Speed HDMI cabling: HDMI 2.2 specification article and HDMI technology overview. This is useful context for future products, but it does not make HDMI 2.2 a requirement for a buyer whose needs are the HDMI 2.1-era features covered here. The same buying rule still applies: inspect the exact capabilities and inputs of the product you are considering.

Assuming every HDMI input is identical
Fix this by creating a port map from the manual. Connect the gaming source to the input documented for its target mode and reserve the eARC input for the audio device.
Assuming “120 Hz” means VRR
A fixed 120 Hz input and variable refresh are separate claims. Confirm both in the specifications, along with the supported VRR range or modes when the manufacturer provides them.
Checking only the TV and not the source
VRR and high-refresh video require a compatible console or PC output. Compare the source’s documented modes with the TV’s input table before purchase.

Expecting eARC to guarantee a specific soundtrack
eARC provides the transport path; it does not force an app, disc player or receiver to produce a particular format. Confirm the source, TV passthrough behavior and audio-device decoding support.
Replacing cables unnecessarily
Start with the required signal and test the existing cable. If the connection needs Ultra High Speed performance, replace it with a certified cable rather than relying on generic version wording.
A practical buying checklist
- Exact model number verified, including regional variant where relevant.
- Required HDMI inputs identified by port number.
- Target resolution and refresh rate documented for those inputs.
- VRR support and compatible source mode confirmed.
- eARC port identified on the TV and matching eARC support confirmed on the soundbar or receiver.
- Desired audio formats checked across the complete chain.
- Cable class selected for the actual bandwidth requirement, with certification checked when Ultra High Speed is needed.
- Manual reviewed for firmware, menu settings and limitations not shown in a short product listing.
The bottom line for TV shoppers
Use HDMI 2.1 as a starting point for investigation, never as a complete buying specification. Gaming buyers should verify VRR, resolution, refresh rate and input assignment together. Audio buyers should verify eARC and format support across both devices. Cable buyers should match certification to the required signal. HDMI 2.2’s newer 96 Gbps ceiling is informative future context, but the right television today is the one whose documented ports and features match your equipment and planned connection.
