For local rendering, Hogwarts Legacy’s DLSS 5 update requires a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU. NVIDIA has not named a single minimum model—such as an RTX 5060—or published a game-specific minimum VRAM capacity. The update is scheduled for November 5, 2026, and NVIDIA also lists GeForce NOW and RTX Spark as ways to use the feature without rendering it on a local PC.
Your practical choice still depends on resolution, ray-tracing settings, the frame rate you want before frame generation, and whether your processor can keep up. The figures below separate confirmed DLSS 5 compatibility from the much higher hardware tiers used by Hogwarts Legacy itself.

The confirmed DLSS 5 requirement
NVIDIA announced on October 13, 2026 that DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is coming to Hogwarts Legacy on November 5, 2026. For a locally rendered game, the stated target is the GeForce RTX 50 Series. NVIDIA does not identify an RTX 5060, 5070, 5080, or 5090 as the minimum card.
That means “RTX 50 Series” is a compatibility requirement, not a buying recommendation for every resolution. A lower-tier RTX 50 card may be suitable for 1080p, while a higher-tier model is more appropriate for 4K with ray tracing and a high pre-frame-generation frame rate. NVIDIA has not supplied Hogwarts Legacy-specific performance numbers for each RTX 50 model.

Alternatives to a local RTX 50 card
- GeForce NOW: the game can be streamed from NVIDIA’s cloud hardware, so your local PC does not need to render DLSS 5.
- RTX Spark: NVIDIA lists RTX Spark as another supported platform for the update.
Cloud or hosted play changes the local requirements, but it does not turn the feature into a general capability of older GeForce cards running the game locally.
Is an RTX 5090 required?
No official information says that an RTX 5090 is required. NVIDIA has not published a single minimum RTX 50 model for Hogwarts Legacy’s DLSS 5 implementation. The RTX 5090 may be a sensible choice for demanding 4K, maximum ray tracing, or very high refresh rates, but calling it the minimum would go beyond the published information.
Choose by workload instead of by the feature name:
- 1080p: prioritize a card that can render a strong native frame rate. At this resolution, the CPU can become the limiting component sooner, especially when frame generation is enabled.
- 1440p: balance GPU raster performance, ray-tracing headroom, and VRAM. This is often the most useful target for a mid- to high-range RTX 50 desktop or laptop, but NVIDIA has not published a Hogwarts Legacy model recommendation.
- 4K: plan for substantially more GPU work, particularly with ray tracing. Select a card based on native rendered performance and memory headroom, not on the number of generated frames alone.
Laptop GPUs need an additional check: two systems with the same RTX model name can have different power limits and cooling, so their sustained performance can differ. Desktop and laptop results should not be treated as interchangeable.

NVIDIA says the October DLSS 5 update reduces 4K VRAM usage by 20%. It also shrinks the model footprint by 24%, to roughly 118 million parameters, and cuts GPU overhead to half that of the September version at comparable visual fidelity.
Those are relative efficiency improvements. They do not establish a universal amount of VRAM that every RTX 50 card needs for Hogwarts Legacy. NVIDIA has not published a DLSS 5-specific minimum VRAM number for this game, nor has it promised that a particular capacity will cover every combination of resolution, texture quality, ray tracing, mods, and background applications.

How to interpret the 20% figure
A 20% reduction means the October model uses one-fifth less 4K VRAM than the compared September model under NVIDIA’s stated comparison. It does not mean the game will use only 20% of a card’s memory, and it does not convert directly into a recommended card capacity. Hogwarts Legacy’s base rendering workload, textures, operating system, driver, and other applications still consume memory.
Why model parameters are not a card specification
“Roughly 118 million parameters” describes the neural model’s size. It is not the same as the game’s total VRAM allocation, and it cannot be used by itself to calculate a minimum GPU. Runtime buffers, rendered resolution, texture assets, ray-tracing data, frame-generation history, and the display mode all contribute to memory use.

The game’s published PC table is useful for sizing the underlying game, but it predates and does not define a DLSS 5 minimum. It specifies DirectX 12 and 85GB of storage. The higher tiers require an SSD, and the Ultra tiers increase system-memory requirements.
| Game target | Graphics hardware listed | System RAM | Storage and API notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum/Low | GeForce GTX 960 4GB or Radeon RX 470 4GB | Not stated in the supplied table | DirectX 12; 85GB storage |
| Recommended/High | GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, Radeon RX 5700 XT, or Intel Arc A770 | 16GB | DirectX 12; 85GB storage |
| Ultra 1440p | GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or Radeon RX 6800 XT | 32GB | DirectX 12; SSD required for higher tiers; 85GB storage |
| Ultra 4K | GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XT | 32GB | DirectX 12; SSD required; 85GB storage |
The Ultra 4K row is the clearest indication of the game’s base workload: an RTX 3090 Ti or RX 7900 XT class card and 32GB of system RAM. It is not a statement that either card supports DLSS 5 Neural Rendering, and it is not a substitute for an RTX 50-series compatibility requirement.
Does frame generation work with DLSS 5?
Yes. Hogwarts Legacy already supports DLSS Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction on GeForce RTX PCs and laptops. The November 5 update adds DLSS Neural Rendering and upgrades the game’s other DLSS technologies.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why generated FPS does not replace native performance
Frame generation inserts AI-created images between conventionally rendered frames. It can raise the displayed frame rate, but it does not remove the need for a responsive base render. If the GPU or CPU is producing too few real frames, controls can still feel delayed even when an overlay reports a high generated rate.
For a good result, check these conditions:
- Native frame rate: establish a stable rendered frame rate before enabling Multi Frame Generation.
- CPU headroom: crowded areas, simulation work, and high frame-rate targets can become CPU-limited, especially at 1080p.
- Resolution and ray tracing: higher settings increase the work that must be completed for each real frame.
- Latency: generated frames improve motion smoothness, but they do not provide the same input response as additional natively rendered frames.
How to choose hardware for your target
Step 1: Decide where the game will render
- Local PC or laptop: use a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU for the stated DLSS 5 target.
- Cloud play: use GeForce NOW if you want the game rendered remotely; verify your subscription, network quality, and the game’s availability in your region.
- RTX Spark: treat it as NVIDIA’s separately listed supported platform rather than assuming it has the same local-PC requirements as a desktop card.
Step 2: Set a resolution and graphics target
For 1080p, avoid buying solely for the highest generated-frame count; CPU limits and latency are more visible at high refresh rates. At 1440p, compare the card’s native rendering performance, ray-tracing capability, and memory capacity. At 4K, give priority to sustained GPU performance and VRAM headroom, because Ultra settings and ray tracing leave less margin for background use or future updates.
Step 3: Establish a native-FPS baseline
- Install the current game update and graphics driver.
- Run Hogwarts Legacy at your intended resolution and ray-tracing preset with frame generation disabled.
- Check whether the native frame rate is stable in demanding locations, not only in an empty hallway or benchmark route.
- Only then enable DLSS Super Resolution, Multi Frame Generation, and the new Neural Rendering options that the November update exposes.
This order lets you distinguish a rendering bottleneck from a frame-generation setting problem. If the native result is already unstable, adding generated frames can make motion appear smoother without fixing stutter or input response.
Step 4: Check the rest of the system
- System memory: the published Ultra 1440p and Ultra 4K tiers specify 32GB of RAM; the recommended/high tier specifies 16GB.
- Storage: the game table lists 85GB and requires an SSD for the higher tiers.
- API: DirectX 12 is specified by the game’s table.
- Cooling and power: particularly important for laptops, where the same GPU name can operate at different power limits.
- Display: match your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate to the performance target; a 4K 144Hz display demands a different balance than a 1440p 60Hz panel.
Can RTX 40 or RTX 30 cards run DLSS 5?
The available official information does not confirm DLSS 5 Neural Rendering support for RTX 40- or RTX 30-series cards in Hogwarts Legacy. Do not assume that support for earlier DLSS features automatically includes the new Neural Rendering implementation.

Those cards may continue to run Hogwarts Legacy and may retain previously supported DLSS features, but that is a separate question from receiving the DLSS 5 update. NVIDIA has not published a Hogwarts Legacy-specific confirmation for RTX 40 or RTX 30 hardware.
Common buying and setup mistakes
Mistaking the game’s Ultra 4K tier for a DLSS 5 requirement
The RTX 3090 Ti/RX 7900 XT and 32GB RAM listed for Ultra 4K describe the game’s base configuration. They do not establish Neural Rendering compatibility. DLSS 5 local support is tied to RTX 50 Series in NVIDIA’s announcement.
Assuming VRAM scales directly from the model size
The 118-million-parameter figure is not a total memory budget. Use NVIDIA’s 20% reduction as an efficiency comparison, then size the complete system for your resolution, textures, ray tracing, and operating environment.
Buying for generated FPS alone
Multi Frame Generation can create up to five AI frames per rendered frame on qualifying RTX 50 hardware, but stable native rendering and a capable CPU remain important for latency and consistency.
