What Hardware Do You Need to Run a Jellyfin Server 24/7?

For most homes, the best 24/7 Jellyfin server is a low-power Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series mini PC with integrated graphics, 8GB or more of RAM, a 100GB-or-larger SSD for the operating system and transcoding cache, and wired gigabit Ethernet. Keep your movies and shows on separate bulk storage. This setup can direct-play most files and use Intel Quick Sync when a client needs a video transcode.

Choose a discrete GPU only when several users will transcode at once, clients lack support for your codecs, or HDR tone-mapping exceeds the integrated GPU’s capability. Jellyfin’s official guidance warns that CPU-only video transcoding is very demanding, so a processor without usable hardware acceleration is a poor choice for an always-on server.

The hardware baseline for a 24/7 Jellyfin server

A Jellyfin server does not need gaming-class hardware when your playback devices can direct-play the files. The requirements change sharply when the server must convert video, resize it, burn in subtitles, or map HDR to SDR. Select parts around that workload rather than around a generic CPU model.

Component Practical baseline Why it matters When to upgrade
Host Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series mini PC Low idle power, compact 24/7 operation and integrated graphics with Quick Sync Use a stronger CPU or discrete GPU for many simultaneous transcodes
Graphics Supported integrated GPU, typically Intel Quick Sync Moves video encode/decode work off the CPU Add NVIDIA, Intel Arc or another validated GPU for heavier codec or HDR workloads
Memory 8GB is a sensible starting point Leaves room for Jellyfin, the operating system and other services Use 16GB or more when running containers, databases or several services
System disk At least a 100GB SSD Holds the operating system, Jellyfin files and transcoding cache Add capacity when Windows 11, large files or concurrent streams expand cache usage
Media storage Separate HDD, SSD, NAS share or storage pool sized to your library Video libraries consume far more space than the server software Use redundant or expandable storage as the library grows
Network Wired gigabit Ethernet or faster Provides predictable local streaming and file access Use faster Ethernet for very high-bitrate media or multiple servers

Why an Intel N-series mini PC is the usual starting point

Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series platforms combine low power draw with integrated graphics suitable for Jellyfin’s Quick Sync acceleration. A mini PC also keeps the always-on system small, quiet and easy to place near a router or storage device. Check the exact processor generation and graphics capabilities; the N-series label alone does not guarantee support for every codec or HDR workflow.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Install the operating system and Jellyfin on the SSD, then mount your media from a separate internal disk, USB enclosure or network share. Separating application storage from bulk media makes replacement and backup easier and prevents a full media disk from leaving the operating system without working space.

How much RAM is enough?

Jellyfin itself is not usually memory-hungry. Eight gigabytes is a practical baseline for a dedicated server, while 16GB gives useful headroom for Docker containers, metadata tools, file sharing, monitoring and other services. More RAM does not compensate for a weak video engine: a memory upgrade will not turn CPU-only transcoding into hardware-accelerated transcoding.

Transcoding, not the headline CPU speed, determines the build

Direct play uses very little server power

When a client supports the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, resolution and subtitle format, Jellyfin can send the original file without converting it. This is direct play. The server mainly reads from storage and sends data over the network, so even modest hardware can serve several direct-play sessions if storage and networking are reliable.

Transcoding creates the heavy workload

Jellyfin transcodes when a client cannot decode the source, when the connection cannot sustain the original bitrate, or when subtitles and other presentation requirements force conversion. Video decoding, scaling and encoding can consume substantial CPU and GPU resources. Jellyfin explicitly says that having no GPU is not recommended because CPU video transcoding is very performance demanding.

Do not choose a server by quoting a universal number of streams. The result depends on the source codec, output codec, resolution, bitrate, subtitle behavior, operating system, graphics drivers, Jellyfin version and number of concurrent users. A setup that handles several 1080p conversions may struggle with one 4K HDR conversion that also needs tone-mapping.

HDR tone-mapping can be the limiting case

HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping converts a high-dynamic-range source for an SDR display. It adds processing beyond ordinary decode and encode. Jellyfin’s hardware guidance gives a Ryzen 9 5950X as an example of a powerful CPU that may still fail to handle even one stream in some tone-mapping configurations. That example is a warning against assuming that many CPU cores alone guarantee 4K performance.

GPU choices and hardware-acceleration support

Jellyfin documents several validated acceleration paths. The correct choice depends on the operating system, driver support and codecs required by your library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Acceleration path Typical use Important checks
Intel Quick Sync Video Integrated acceleration in many Intel CPUs, including recent N-series systems Confirm the specific generation supports the codecs and HDR operations you need; install the correct graphics driver
NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC Discrete decode and encode for heavier transcoding workloads Verify codec support, driver compatibility and the card’s encoder capabilities; supported cards can run headless on Windows and Linux
AMD AMF Hardware acceleration on supported AMD graphics Check the exact GPU, operating system and driver support
Linux VA-API Linux interface used by supported integrated and discrete GPUs Configure device permissions and confirm the driver exposes the needed codecs
Apple Video Toolbox Acceleration on supported Apple hardware Check the macOS hardware and Jellyfin deployment method
Rockchip RKMPP Acceleration on selected Rockchip systems Use a supported RK3588 or RK3588S platform and verify software support

When a discrete GPU is justified

  • Several household members will transcode video simultaneously.
  • Your clients do not support the library’s codecs or container formats.
  • You regularly convert 4K HDR content and need tone-mapping.
  • Your chosen CPU has no usable integrated graphics.
  • You want additional encoding capacity without replacing the host platform.

A discrete card adds purchase cost, idle power use, heat and driver maintenance. It is not automatically better for a server that mostly direct-plays. Check the encoder specification before buying: Jellyfin flags some low-end cards, including the GT 1030 and RX 6400, as unable to provide hardware encoding. A card that can display a desktop is not necessarily a card that can encode Jellyfin streams.

Three sensible build patterns

Balanced home server: low-power mini PC

Use an Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series mini PC, 8GB or 16GB of RAM, a 100GB-or-larger SSD and a gigabit Ethernet connection. Attach a large hard drive, USB enclosure or NAS share for the library. This is the best fit when most playback is direct play and occasional transcodes can be handled by Quick Sync.

Heavy-transcoding server: desktop or workstation with a validated GPU

Choose a system with enough cooling, reliable power delivery and a discrete NVIDIA or Intel Arc GPU when multiple users need conversion at once or when HDR tone-mapping is routine. Leave space for the GPU, use a wired network connection and verify that your operating system exposes the encoder to Jellyfin. Do not promise a stream count without testing the exact codec mix and drivers.

Storage-first server: NAS appliance

A NAS can simplify bulk storage, drive expansion and redundancy, but its processor may be too slow for an acceptable Jellyfin experience. Prebuilt NAS systems can also be harder to configure for third-party software. Before choosing one, confirm that its CPU or integrated GPU supports the required acceleration path, that the Jellyfin package is maintained for its operating system, and that it has enough network bandwidth for your clients.

Storage: separate the system, cache and media

The 100GB SSD recommendation

Jellyfin’s official Hardware Selection guidance recommends a 100GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files and transcoding cache. Treat that as a floor, not a media-library size. Windows 11 installations, large source files and several concurrent transcodes can consume more cache space, so leave additional free capacity rather than filling the disk.

How to size bulk media storage

There is no universal media-disk number because library size depends on the number of titles, resolution, codec and bitrate. Estimate the size of your existing files, add room for new additions and keep working space for downloads, imports and temporary operations. A separate media volume also lets you reinstall Jellyfin without moving the library.

Reliability and backup

RAID or a storage pool can keep a drive failure from immediately taking the library offline, but redundancy is not a backup. Keep a second copy of irreplaceable files and export Jellyfin configuration and metadata on a schedule. If the media is on a NAS, use a stable mount and test that the server reconnects after a reboot.

Networking and remote streaming requirements

Use Ethernet for the server

Connect the server with gigabit Ethernet or faster. Jellyfin says Wi-Fi and powerline networking are not recommended for a server because interference, contention and variable latency can produce a poor experience. Wi-Fi can still be used by a viewing client; the always-on host should have a wired path to the router and storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for upload speed outside your home

Remote playback consumes your home’s upload bandwidth. Jellyfin recommends at least 20 Mbps upload for remote access. If total upload capacity is below 100 Mbps, its guidance suggests limiting Jellyfin to 70% of the available upload speed so other household traffic retains headroom. A high-bitrate 4K stream can exceed that budget, forcing a lower-bitrate transcode or preventing a reliable remote session.

Operating-system, driver and version checks

  1. Confirm CPU compatibility. Jellyfin 10.11 requires an x86 CPU with SSE4.1. Jellyfin identifies Intel Penryn, introduced in Q4 2007, and AMD Bulldozer, introduced in Q4 2011, as examples of generations that support the instruction set.
  2. Install the current graphics driver for your operating system. Hardware acceleration depends on the driver exposing the required decode and encode functions, not merely on the GPU appearing in the device list.
  3. Enable the appropriate acceleration method in Jellyfin. Select the backend that matches your hardware, then choose only codecs the GPU can decode or encode.
  4. Test a real file from your library. Try a direct-play title, a forced 1080p transcode and an HDR file that requires tone-mapping. Watch CPU, GPU, memory, temperature and network utilization during each test.
  5. Check the playback dashboard during a session. Confirm whether the client reports Direct Play, Remux, Direct Stream or Transcode. A transcode may be triggered by subtitles or audio even when the video codec itself is compatible.

24/7 operation: heat, noise and maintenance

Continuous operation makes idle efficiency and cooling more important than a short benchmark. Keep the mini PC or desktop in a ventilated location, clean dust from filters and fans, and avoid stacking it against a wall or inside a sealed cabinet. Select a power supply with appropriate headroom for the host and any discrete GPU.

Use automatic updates carefully: a new operating-system or graphics-driver version can change hardware-acceleration behavior. Keep a known-good driver and Jellyfin version available, and schedule reboots during a period when no one is watching. Monitor disk health, SSD free space, temperatures and failed mounts so a problem is found before a family member starts a stream.

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
CPU reaches near 100% during playback Software transcoding or unsupported hardware acceleration Playback mode, GPU driver, selected Jellyfin backend and codec support
4K HDR playback buffers while 1080p works Tone-mapping or 4K encode exceeds the available GPU/CPU capacity Whether the client can direct-play HDR, tone-mapping settings and GPU utilization
Playback stops when subtitles are enabled Subtitle burn-in forces a video transcode Subtitle format and client support; test external subtitles or a compatible client
Remote streams fail but local streams work Insufficient upload capacity, router configuration or an over-large source bitrate At least 20 Mbps upload, the 70% cap guidance below 100 Mbps and the remote connection path
Server works after installation but loses the library after reboot Unreliable or late-mounted storage share Persistent mount configuration, network availability at boot and share permissions

Choosing between a mini PC, NAS and older computer

Choose the mini PC when you want the simplest low-power host with integrated Quick Sync and can place media on separate storage. Choose a NAS when integrated drive bays, expansion and storage management are more important than turnkey application support, but verify its CPU and GPU first. Reuse an older computer only if it has SSE4.1, adequate cooling, a supported hardware-acceleration path and acceptable idle power; a fast desktop CPU without a usable GPU can still be a poor Jellyfin transcoder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most single-board computers, including Raspberry Pi 5, are described by Jellyfin’s guidance as too slow for a satisfactory general server unless they use a platform such as Rockchip RK3588/RK3588S, Intel Core or Intel 12th-generation N-series. Treat small-board builds as specialist projects that require careful codec and driver validation rather than as a universal bargain.

A practical buying checklist

  • Identify how many viewers may watch at once and how many will be remote.
  • List your source codecs, resolutions, HDR formats and subtitle types.
  • Estimate how often clients will direct-play instead of transcode.
  • Choose an Intel N-series mini PC with Quick Sync for the balanced low-power baseline.
  • Provide at least 100GB of SSD space for the operating system, Jellyfin and cache.
  • Size separate media storage for the library, growth and backup copies.
  • Use gigabit Ethernet or faster for the server.
  • Confirm at least 20 Mbps upload for remote access and reserve bandwidth when your connection is below 100 Mbps.
  • Verify GPU codec support, operating-system drivers and Jellyfin version before buying a discrete card.
  • Test direct play, ordinary transcoding and HDR tone-mapping with your own files before declaring the system ready for 24/7 use.
