1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a working prototype, you need an ESP32-C6 development board, a data-capable USB cable that fits that board, and a computer running Windows, Linux, or macOS. You also need Espressif’s ESP-IDF software toolchain to compile and flash firmware. The device can use Matter over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread because the ESP32-C6 includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth Low Energy, and IEEE 802.15.4 radios. Thread adds a network requirement: a Thread Border Router must connect the Thread network to the home or lab IP network.
The minimum hardware list
The central physical part is an ESP32-C6 development kit. Espressif’s ESP-IDF v6.1 getting-started documentation identifies an ESP32-C6 board as required hardware and lists the DevKitC-1 and DevKitM-1 as official examples. Either board lets you develop and flash a Matter application before designing a custom circuit.

| Item | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| ESP32-C6 development board | Runs the Matter firmware and provides the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE and 802.15.4 radios. | Exact board model, module, flash size, antenna arrangement and current revision. |
| USB data cable | Supplies power and carries the programming and serial data connection. | Connector type for the board and data capability; a charge-only cable will not work for programming. |
| Computer | Runs ESP-IDF, builds the application and flashes the board. | Windows, Linux or macOS, with the required USB access and drivers configured. |
| Application hardware | Provides the function that makes the product useful, such as sensing, switching or indicating. | Choose parts for the specific Matter device; there is no universal peripheral bill of materials. |
| Thread network equipment, if applicable | Provides the IP connection between a Thread mesh and the rest of the network. | Confirm that the intended environment already has a compatible Thread Border Router. |
ESP-IDF itself is software rather than a bench component. Its setup includes the target toolchain, CMake, Ninja and ESP-IDF. You cannot compile or flash the Matter application with the board and cable alone.

| Board | Module and flash information | Antenna and radio details | Selection implications |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESP32-C6-DevKitM-1 | Based on ESP32-C6-MINI-1(U); the user guide reports 4 MB flash in the module. | MINI-1 uses a PCB antenna. MINI-1U provides an external antenna connector. The guide reports Wi-Fi 6 at 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5 and 802.15.4 support for Zigbee 3.0 and Thread 1.3. | Useful for a compact module-based prototype. Check whether the particular board uses the PCB-antenna or external-antenna variant. |
| ESP32-C6-DevKitC-1 | The cited v1.1 guide describes an ESP32-C6-WROOM-1 module with 8 MB SPI flash. | Wi-Fi 6 at 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5 and IEEE 802.15.4, with a PCB antenna. | Provides the larger documented flash configuration, but check the board revision: the guide notes that a v1.2 revision is available. |
The guides describe development kits, not performance rankings. The available documentation does not establish a speed, range, power-consumption or price winner between these boards. For a fair choice, use the board whose module, antenna arrangement, flash capacity and current revision match your enclosure and firmware plan.
Decide whether the product will use Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread
Matter over Wi-Fi
Choose Wi-Fi when the device should join an existing 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network directly. The ESP32-C6’s Wi-Fi 6 radio operates at 2.4 GHz, and Espressif maps Wi-Fi-capable ESP32 platforms to Matter Wi-Fi devices. You still need Bluetooth LE for the documented commissioning flow, but Bluetooth is not the operational Matter network in this configuration.
Matter over Thread
Choose Thread when the product is intended to be a low-power mesh end device or when the surrounding smart-home architecture is built around Thread. The ESP32-C6’s IEEE 802.15.4 radio supports the Thread path. The end device is only one part of that system: Thread nodes communicate through a Thread network, and that network needs a Border Router to reach Wi-Fi and other IP networks.

Bluetooth LE’s role
Bluetooth LE is used for commissioning and setup in the documented examples. It does not replace the Wi-Fi or Thread radio as the device’s normal Matter transport. Plan for the commissioning procedure in software and for a controller that can perform it.
What Thread infrastructure do you need?
A Thread Border Router connects the Thread network to Wi-Fi or another IP network. Espressif’s reference architecture uses an ESP32-H-family device together with a Wi-Fi SoC for that role. This is an example of how to build infrastructure, not a requirement to purchase another board when the intended home, lab or hub already supplies a compatible Border Router.
Before choosing Thread, identify the Border Router that will be present during testing and deployment. Verify that it can join the same IP network as the Matter controller and that it will remain available while the ESP32-C6 device is commissioned. If no Border Router exists, a Thread prototype may appear to work at the radio level but remain unreachable from the controller.

Controller and commissioning equipment
Espressif lists a host-based CHIP Tool commissioner and the ESP RainMaker iOS and Android applications as controller options. These are software controllers; they do not add a required radio to the ESP32-C6 development board. The exact commissioning steps depend on whether you selected Wi-Fi or Thread and on the controller software you use.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a Wi-Fi prototype, plan for a 2.4 GHz network with credentials available during commissioning. For a Thread prototype, plan for the Thread credentials and a functioning Border Router. In both cases, keep the computer, board and controller software aligned with the Matter example and ESP-IDF versions you selected.
Step-by-step prototype setup
- Define the device function. Decide whether the product is a sensor, switch, relay, light, indicator or another endpoint. Write down every external signal, load and user control that the firmware must support.
- Select the transport. Pick Matter over Wi-Fi if direct 2.4 GHz network access is the priority. Pick Matter over Thread if the product belongs on a Thread mesh and a Border Router will be available.
- Choose the board. Compare DevKitM-1 and DevKitC-1 by module, flash, antenna, GPIO access and current revision. The DevKitM-1 guide documents 4 MB flash; the cited DevKitC-1 v1.1 guide documents 8 MB SPI flash.
- Match the cable to the connector. Inspect the exact board rather than assuming every ESP32-C6 kit has the same port. The DevKitM-1 documentation specifies a USB-A-to-USB-C cable and warns that charge-only cables lack the data lines needed for programming.
- Prepare the host computer. Install ESP-IDF and its target toolchain, CMake and Ninja on Windows, Linux or macOS. Complete the Espressif setup for the ESP32-C6 target before connecting application peripherals.
- Connect and identify the board. Use the data cable to power the kit and establish the programming connection. Confirm that the operating system exposes the board’s serial/programming interface before attempting to flash firmware.
- Start with the relevant Matter example. Configure the example for Wi-Fi or Thread, matching the radio path selected in step two. The ESP-Matter development material presents these as alternative configurations for ESP32-C6.
- Build and flash. Use the ESP-IDF build and flash workflow supplied with the installed version. Keep the board powered and connected through the data cable until the operation completes.
- Add the application circuit. Connect the sensor, switch, relay, LED or other peripheral required by the endpoint. Follow the electrical requirements of each part; the generic ESP32-C6 documentation does not define one wiring diagram for every product.
- Commission and test. Use the selected controller, Bluetooth LE commissioning flow and either the Wi-Fi network or Thread Border Router. Test both initial commissioning and recovery after a reboot or temporary network outage.
Plan the application peripherals separately
An ESP32-C6 kit is a controller and radio platform, not a complete product. A temperature sensor, motion sensor, button, relay, LED, display, motor driver or other load may be required depending on the endpoint type. The ESP-Matter development documentation treats peripheral configuration as device-dependent, so it does not provide a universal parts list.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Make a pin and power plan before attaching parts. List each GPIO, bus connection and interrupt, then check for conflicts with the board’s USB/programming path and the radio module. Decide how the prototype will be powered: USB power may be sufficient for a low-power bench demonstration, while a relay, motor or other load may need a separate supply and appropriate driver circuitry. The cited hardware guides do not specify a universal current budget; measure and design for the actual peripherals you select.
For a first bench build, keep external wiring short and clearly labeled. Add an enclosure only after the antenna position, connector access and reset/programming access are known. A temporary breadboard arrangement is useful for validating Matter behavior, but it should not be treated as the final safety or electromagnetic design.

USB, antenna and revision details that commonly cause mistakes
Charge-only cables
A cable can power the board while still preventing flashing or serial communication. The DevKitM-1 guide specifically warns that charge-only USB cables omit data lines. If the computer never detects the programming interface, substitute a known data cable before changing firmware settings.

Wrong connector assumption
Do not order a cable solely from the ESP32-C6 name. Confirm the connector on the exact development kit and the port used for programming. The DevKitM-1 documentation covers more than one module or port arrangement, so inspect the board and its current guide.
PCB versus external antenna
The MINI-1 module uses a PCB antenna, while MINI-1U provides an external antenna connector. That choice affects enclosure placement and the mechanical design of a later custom board. Do not attach an external antenna to a PCB-antenna variant or assume the two module suffixes are interchangeable without checking the board documentation.
Board revisions
The cited DevKitC-1 guide describes revision 1.1 and notes that revision 1.2 is available. Confirm the revision printed on the board and read the matching guide before finalizing pin assignments, connector expectations or assembly instructions.
Prototype hardware versus a production product
A development kit proves firmware and Matter behavior; it is not a finished product design. A production board requires an application-specific review of RF layout, antenna selection, power regulation, enclosure materials, thermal behavior, manufacturing test access and applicable certification. None of those requirements can be reduced to the generic USB-and-board list.
Keep the prototype architecture modular until the transport decision and peripheral behavior are stable. Once the endpoint is working, document the exact ESP32-C6 module, flash configuration, antenna arrangement, board revision, power source and Matter transport. Those details become the baseline for a custom PCB and for any later compliance or manufacturing work.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting the first build
- The board powers up but cannot be flashed: replace the cable with a verified data-capable cable, check the connector and confirm that ESP-IDF sees the board’s programming interface.
- The selected example does not join the intended network: verify that the firmware configuration matches Wi-Fi or Thread; do not expect Bluetooth LE commissioning to provide the operational network.
- A Thread device cannot be reached by the controller: check that a compatible Thread Border Router is running and connected to the same IP network as the controller.
- A peripheral behaves unpredictably: isolate the Matter example from the external circuit, then verify pin assignments, power, ground and the peripheral’s required interface.
- The board documentation does not match the hardware: check the module marking and board revision, especially when choosing between DevKitM-1 variants or DevKitC-1 revisions.
- The enclosure weakens connectivity: revisit antenna placement and keep the selected PCB or external antenna arrangement clear of materials and structures that were not present during bench testing.
Final ordering checklist
- One ESP32-C6 development board, with the module, flash size and revision recorded.
- One USB cable that matches the board connector and explicitly supports data.
- A Windows, Linux or macOS computer with ESP-IDF, the ESP32-C6 toolchain, CMake and Ninja installed.
- The sensors, switches, indicators, drivers, power hardware and enclosure required by the endpoint.
- A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi environment for Matter Wi-Fi, or a compatible Thread Border Router for Matter Thread.
- A commissioning/controller method, such as the host-based CHIP Tool or a supported ESP RainMaker mobile application.
